§? The Church of the Virgin Mary at Prague Castle
Dialogue over the beginnings of Christianity
in Bohemia

The church of the Virgin Mary was one of the most searched-for
monuments in Bohemia already from the second half of the nine-
teenth century, with virtually all prominent experts becoming
gradually involved in the stormy exchange of opinions concerning
its location and importance. The Marian church is mentioned for
the last time by the so-called Chronicle of Dalimil, whose origin
is usually dated not long after 1300. The church ceased to exist at
about that time, and its location fell into complete oblivion. All the
possibilities - after a thorough consideration of the known context,
he counted eight of them - were presented in 1949 by Ivan Bork-
ovsky in his work O pocdtcich prazskeho hradu a o nejstarsim kostele
v Praze [On the beginnings of Prague Castle and on the earliest
church in Prague]. He himself was inclined to the opinion that the
church of the Virgin Mary had been situated in the western part
of the Castle, near the passage between the second and the fourth
courtyards, where the remnants of a small-ashlar building and
a paved road were disturbed during the excavations in 1930. His
precisely reasoned hypothesis was crowned with success in 1950,
when archaeological research he headed revealed a small rectan-
gular building ended with an apse of the size of approximately
7.5 x 6 m only a few metres from the presumed location. The pre-
vious activities had completely destroyed the southern part of the
building, disturbing to a certain extent also the remaining parts of
the masonry and the adjacent terrain. This is why the original form
of the church and its building development defy clear reconstruc-
tion to this day. The situation did not change much after a revision
research that took place on the site in 1995, resulting in different
interpretations by Jana Marikova-Kubkova and Jan Frolik.
Contradictory notions derived from the subtle testimony of
the sources certainly cannot be regarded as something unnatural.

RESUME
A wide range of opinions is a precondition for a dialogue, which
may be led inside a single branch of science as well as across
related disciplines of history. The present anthology suggests how
such a dialogue might look like and what are its possibilities. It
does not settle for an analysis of the finding situation but endeav-
ours to set the partial pieces of knowledge into a broader context.
Nora Berend has clearly outlined the starting points and pre-
conditions of the Christianization of the nations of Central and
Eastern Europe. Her contribution also documents how a more
broadly focused explication contends with the traditional para-
digms in nationally defined frameworks. Jin Dynda has attempted
to look into the world of the defeated, the pagans, having inad-
vertently proved that the history is written by the victors and that
the religious notions of pre-Christian Bohemians and Moravians
need to be examined either in the form of a negative imprint or
from a comparison top view, which usually significantly exceeds
both territorial and temporal horizons of the theme under study.
Iva Adamkova, who has contemplated the testimony of written
sources, regrettably states that the careful analysis of the scattered
mentions of the church of the Virgin Mary has brought more ques-
tions than satisfactory answers. In view of the strong influence of
the Regensburg tradition, which affected both the contents and
the vocabulary of Latin legends, or of the fact that the foundation
of the church is ascribed not only to Borivoj but also to his son
Spytihnev, we can perceive her contribution as a warning against
inappropriate overestimation of partial mentions taken out of
context. The reflection by Jan Frolik, who has focused on an anal-
ysis of the cemetery near the church of the Virgin Mary, gives
a similar impression. According to him, the revision has proved
that the house of God was not built in an uninhabited place, but,
at the same time, he doubts whether the fragmentary information
entitles us to pronounce revolutionary judgements. These are not
spared at all by Jana Marikova-Kubkova, who poses the question
of whether the foundations revealed by Ivan Borkovsky's research
must necessarily belong to the church of the Virgin Mary. The
author's answer is negative and apart from the dating, which she
has shifted deeper into the past, she calls for a discussion on the
so far neglected missions.

RESUME
Martin Wihoda suggests that the dialogue concerning the
Christianization of the Bohemians need not discuss only the mer-
its of Duke Borivoj and that the Czech medieval studies might
contemplate more the baptism of the Bohemian dukes in 845. He
also carefully notes that the church of the Virgin Mary might have
been of an earlier origin. What we know about the faith of the
Bohemians “before” Duke Borivoj has been summed up also by
Ivo Stefan. After a criticism of putative archaeological evidence,
he comes to the conclusion that a link to the religion cannot be
reliably proved for any of them. Subsequently, he has discussed
whether the existence of a special priestly stratum can be consid-
ered, and to what extent their role might have been played by
the dukes; this could also offer an explanation of the mysterious
baptism in 845, even though the new faith was not fully asserted
until the power centralisation during the reign of the Premyslids.
Dalibor Prix thinks along the same lines, having pointed out the
fundamental role of the Premyslid dukes in the construction of
the first churches and adding that no premeditated intention can
be considered prior to the middle of the 10th century.
The present anthology consists of contributions or partial stud-
ies whose authors have had absolute freedom to explain how they
view the source that was uncovered by Ivan Borkovsky’s research
in 1950, which is being linked to the beginnings of the Christian
faith in Bohemia, In its essence, it presents the historical work-
shop such as it is, reminding us that the path towards knowledge
is always lined with uncertainty, hesitation and blind alleys.
