“WE ARE DOING NOT REALLY WELL”:
EVERYDAY LIFE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE
1920s THROUGH THE EMOTIONS OF ACADEMIC
INTELLIGENTSIA (INTELLECTUAL CLASS)
OF SOUTHERN RUSSIA
Abstract. The article discusses everyday life of academ-
ic intelligentsia of Southern Russia in the beginning of the
1920s through the prism of their emotions. Content anal-
ysis of private and business correspondence, memoirs, and
periodicals helps not only to reconstruct the context, but
also to understand the emotional standards of the scientific
community, manifested in the way of expressing feelings.
The author noted the connection of these emotions with
the period of “counter-revolution”, as well as the most
traumatic challenges of the present. Quite soon scientists
understood the need to “redact” a recent stage of their
biography: any mentioning of their activities during the
Civil War was highly restrained and should have been
extremely careful. Texts translating the experiences of
the actual problems of everyday life demonstrated that
their emotions were close to despair. The permanent con-
cerns about the food, threat of requisitions and arrests,
lack of the basic amenities were real obstacles for their
364
proper professional and private life according to scien-
tists’ interpretation.
The scientists controlled their expression of emotions
and feelings. This control was the proof of their under-
standing of the negative consequences of the criticism,
confidence in the stability of the new government and
a willingness to adapt it.
Keywords: academic intelligentsia, the beginning of the
1920s, Southern Russia, threats, emotions, “redaction”
of biography, requisitions, famine of 1921—1922, ways of
expressing feelings.

THE CONTROL CASE OF A COMMUNIST
IN THE VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF EMOTIONS
(GELENDZHIK, 1928)
Abstract. The study of the history of everyday life in
a provincial city of 1920s and various emotional aspects al-
low a better understanding of the Soviet past, especially
“emotional regime” and “emotional norms”. To solve such
a case it is more important to analyze the archival docu-
ments (for example documents of party and state control).
A close scrutiny of control cases of party members can help
to identify “emotional norms” and practices which could be
inherent in many townspeople. An example of such a re-
construction is this article which makes an attempt to ana-
lyze some of the individual emotions of the party members
who have been on close inspection of the soviet investigative
bodies. The research is based on personal control and inves-
tigation case of G. Georgiadi, a candidate for party mem-
bership, who made a number of unseemly moral and ethical
transgressions.

AVARICE “IS THE BEGINNING OF ALL EVIL”
(EMOTIONAL BACKGROUND
OF THE “HOUSING FRONT” 1918-1922)
Abstract. The article is devoted to an issue that hasn’t
been studied in the Russian historiography — emotion-
al life of the “housing redistribution”, an important tool
of the social policy of the Bolsheviks in 1918—1922. The
author uses the method of micro historical research
to characterize the emotional background of the process
of “sealing” and redistribution of property of apartment
owners. The documentary basis is Petrograd’s “furniture
affairs”. The combination of formalized questionnaires
with individualized statements and complaints makes
it possible to reveal a complex of feelings of people who
lost and acquired material signs of social well-being (for
example apartments and furniture). In the powerful Sovi-
et discourse, the reaction to human greediness has been
changing depending on the political situation. In the 1918—
1920s in the context of egalitarian attitudes of “military
communism” the facts of containing manifestations of in-
dividual avarice were observed. In the transition to NEP,
when “levelling” became a brake on the growth of the no-
menklatura into peaceful life, the desire for appropriation
of other people’s property for a short time turned into an
unregulated norm of everyday life.
Keywords: housing redistribution, avarice, Bolsheviks,
expropriation, emotions, “furniture business”.

DAILY LIFE AND EMOTIONAL
MODE OF MAGNITOGORSK
IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS
Abstract. Along with the historical-anthropological
approach it is extremely important to examine the histo-
rical realities from the point of view of ordinary peo-
ple through their practical and emotional experiences.
This article explores the everyday life of Magnitogorsk
citizens living and working in a newly built city, as
well as the complex feelings and emotions that accom-
panied the citizens. In the study period, the thoughts
and feelings of the citizens wanted to do something like
that. This contributed to the strengthening of the Sta-
linist regime. Soviet values were imposed on an indi-
vidual through social norms, which people were obliged
to obey, and through which they evaluate their own be-
haviour and the behaviour of others. However, not all
feelings fit into this value system. Officially declared
sensitive design differed from the actual emotional
practices. The latter largely depended on the subjective
(health, gender) and objective (social and cultural con-
ditions of life and work) factors. All the feelings and
experiences were quite “normal” characteristics of any
person and any period, but in conditions of forced in-
dustrialization and the related complex of social con-
ditions, the feelings were sharpened. The citizens were
deprived of their usual social relationships and envi-
ronment, experiencing that “normal” feelings were es-
pecially acute.
Keywords: history of everyday life, the history
of emotions, the USSR, the Urals, Magnitogorsk, indus-
trialization, emotional mode.

EMOTIONAL REPERTOIRE OF ZHAKT’S
INHABITANTS AT THE TIME OF HOUSING HUNGER
(THROUGH THE EXAMPLE OF A SOUTH CITY
IN 1920s)
Abstract. The article discusses the emotional repertoire
of inhabitants of the housing and rental co-operative socie-
ties (ZHAKT) in the early Soviet period (1920s.). The 1920-s
is period of the housing crisis that affected the entire ter-
ritory of the Soviet Russia. Trying to solve the “housing
problem”, the Soviet government began to carry out a new
housing policy, one of the manifestations of which was the
creation of communal apartments. In one house, apartment
or room people who weren’t related to each other lived. Com-
munal living reflect the emotional state of the roommates:
the dirt, disorder and desolation of their living space be-
came the norm. Communal apartment didn’t reserve person-
al space and became the source of stress and conflict. And
it isn’t surprising that the ZHAKT inhabitants experienced
mostly negative emotions: jealousy, anger, hatred, hostility
and feelings of hopelessness.
Author used personal sources, letters to the authorities,
complaints and petitions that investigate emotional world
of the inhabitants. These sources made it possible to re-
construct the emotional regime and emotional suffering
of ZHAKT inhabitants in the 1920s.
Keywords: 1920, housing problem, the emotional world
of the inhabitants, the history of emotions.

A RIGHT TO FEEL: EMOTIONAL AREA
OF THE URAL STUDENTS IN THE 1920s
Abstract. The article highlights the emotional percep-
tion of the main types of life situations in the different lay-
ers of the largest Ural high schools students in the 1920s.
The work is based on data of students reports, published
in the journal “Working Student” and “Proletarian Stu-
dent”. The work also reveals the emotional components of
group portraits of students - participants of the Civil War,
members of the Komsomol, the Communist party members,
“byvshie”, and mothers-students. The characteristics of
emotional states ranged widely from feelings of intense at-
tention, gambling thirst for knowledge, enthusiasm in the
group, belonging to rejection, class exclusivity, uncertain-
ty, confusion, and despair. It also presents the contrast
range of emotional reactions to the idea of friendly behavi-
our in the League, on the concept of love in the new peri-
od. The conclusion is that in the early Soviet period, the
motivating aspect of the new filling processes of emotio-
nal experiences were caused by the introduction of concepts
of common class, the class struggle. The social and psycho-
logical changes of emotional state of the person were gra-
dually formed, the combination of the social role of mo-
thers, students and social workers helped to experience
a role conflict.

states, gender history.

GENDER DIMENSION IN THE EVERYDAY LIFE
HISTORY: THE PROBLEM OF TECHNIQUES
AND METHODS OF ANALYSIS
Abstract. This article looks into the history of everyday
life as a constellation of everyday practices of men and
women in the Past as well as in the Present. The author is
trying to engender “byt” (mode of life) and everyday life
practices of individuals and to show how important the
gender symmetry of researchers and texts authors as well
as empathy of the researcher are for the research.
Feminist anthropology adopts a different methodolog-
ical stance. The claims of objectivity are replaced by em-
pathy and involvement of ethnographic and social-psycho-
logical information of respondents, which is worth it, as
are the personal experiences of the analysts, even though
traditional scholarship tried to marginalize them. Gender
anthropology eschews imperialism and denigration of the
culture under study in favour of a thorough analysis of
the superstitions and prejudices that analysts bring from
their own ethnical, social and group culture.
Keywords: woman, women’s history, gender, gender em-
pathy, gender symmetry, history of everyday life.

“SCIENTISTS” PROMOTION IN THE SOVIET RUSSIA
BETWEEN 1917 AND 1941: HISTORY OF EVERYDAY
LIFE OF THE SCIENTISTS BEFORE THE GREAT
PATHRIOTIC WAR
Abstract. The article describes the history of folding of
rewards, benefits and privileges given to the Soviet scien-
tists during the first years of the great social experiment
370
till the beginning of the war. The author analyzes the
documents that shed light on the history of slow, steady
bribery process of the top of the academic community, of
buying its loyalty and acceptance of all the actions of the
Soviet ideologists.
The story of the first two decades, the relationship
of scientific workers (employees of academic institutions)
with the Authorities expressively describes the reasons
for the attractiveness of the professional scientific work
at the time when it was well paid. This period in the his-
tory of Soviet science was regulated by the work of spe-
cial institutions: the Central Commission for improving
scientific life - Section (then the Commission) to facilitate
scientists (KSU) - Administrative and economic manage-
ment of the USSR Academy - Central management of sup-
ply USSR Academy of Sciences, Akademprodsnab (Acade-
mic food supply). The documents of these structures make
it possible to visualize the life of the top of the academic
community from 1920s to 1941. The lack of real competi-
tion of ideas and latent forms of bribery of loyal scientists
have created a significant number of careerists in the So-
viet scientific community who wanted to cling to the in-
creasingly growing Soviet bureaucracy and pseudo-scien-
tific dream to have the same wealth as the outstanding
individuals. These science officials had tremendous oppor-
tunities to snatch something for themselves (apartments,
dachas and cars). The first two decades of Soviet science
history from this perspective revealed the ugly picture of
how scientific structure served for realization of non-sci-
entific tasks - distributional, educational, and sometimes
tasks of control and repression, leading not to unity but
to disunity of the scientific community.
Keywords: history of Soviet science, Soviet authority,
everyday life of scientific community, social inequality.

PROVINCIAL CITY AS THE SPACE
FOR “EMOTIONAL” DAILY LIFE IN THE 1920s:
METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES
AND PROBLEMS OF STUDYING
Abstract. The article considers some research approa-
ches that can be used as a methodological “lattice” for
studying a provincial city in the perspective of emotional
history of everyday life. The problems of applying these
approaches are analyzed in the research practice of a his-
torian of urban everyday life of the 1920s. As an example
of a large provincial city, Krasnodar of 1920s was taken
as a social space in which a diverse everyday life was re-
flected through the emotions of the citizens. The reflec-
tion on the methodical abilities of historians to identify
and study the emotional aspect of everyday life in a pro-
vincial city in the early Soviet period led the author to
the conclusion that the approach and limitations of such
an approach are historically related mainly to informative
sources. One of the ways out is seen in borrowing the ac-
cumulated methodical experience of the researches in ad-
jacent sciences.
Keywords: 1920s, provincial city, Krasnodar, ur-
ban space, “new” urbanism, the history of everyday life,
the history of emotions.

EMOTIONAL NORMS OF THE POWER AND YOUTH
IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE KRASNODAR CASE
OF 1928
Abstract. The article refers to the description and
interpretation of a student mass protest took place
372
in Krasnodar, March 1928 in connection with the sen-
tence of the court on the «Sindarovsky’s case». The
OGPIJ papers, documents of party and Komsomol in-
stitutions, articles and memoirs of participants are the
main data sources. The case is analyzed with the cul-
tural history of the emotions research «optics», which
lets us understand the past as the world of feelings and
emotional experiences. The author pays his attention to
the feeling system of two «emotional communities» in-
volved into those events - the official authorities (party,
trade union, Komsomol functionaries, law enforcement
and management of higher education institutions) and
students (they reflect all the peculiarities of their small
community in each educational institution).
An analysis of official discourse of power, the discus-
sions at the party and Komsomol meetings and students’
prejudicial evidence shows that the young people consi-
dered the highest judiciary, but not the local one, to be
credible. Party power and the OGPU institutions were
not willing to lose the status of a paternalistic «strict fa-
ther» in the relationship with the youth. Emotional value
of power and students were placed in different frame of
coordinate system. These two different types of culture
displayed some differences in emotional evaluations. To
say more, the official authorities tried to make the youth
change the direction of emotional standards and focus on
strict feelings. It’s necessary to admit that the nature
of mutual fears was different. The fear of the official
authorities was cognitive whereas the youth’ one had an
affective-cognitive structure.

PROBLEMS AND METHODS HISTORY OF EMOTIONS
Abstract. What are some of the general methodologi-
cal issues involved in writing a history of the emotions?
Before answering this question, we need to address a ma-
jor problem. If emotions are, as many scientists think,
biological entities, universal within all human popula-
tions, do they—indeed can they—have much of a history
at all? Once it is determined that they are less univer-
sal than claimed (without denying their somatic substra-
tum), a host of problems and opportunities for the histo-
ry of emotions emerge. In this paper, I propose that we
study the emotions of the past by considering “emotional
communities” (briefly: social groups whose members ad-
here to the same valuations of emotions and their expres-
sion). I argue that we should take into consideration the
full panoply of sources that these groups produced, and
I suggest how we might most effectively interpret those
sources. Finally, I consider how and why emotional change
takes place, urging that the history of emotions be inte-
grated into other sorts of histories—social, political, and
intellectual.

CINEMA AS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
OF THE SOVIET LEISURE DAILY LIFE:
KAZAN, 1920s
Abstract. The article is devoted to the first steps in the
organization of filmmaking and the establishment of the
Soviet cinema in the Russian province in 1920s. A variant
of socio-political experiment granting and mastering the
374
“new” culture through cinema is examined on the Kazan
example. Kazan was a large provincial Volga town, and
since 1920 it has become the capital of the Tatar Auto-
nomous Soviet socialist Republic. The article has identi-
fied and traced the basic ways and means of restructur-
ing the provincial cinema in a new way: the establishment
and activities of the first Soviet regional film organiza-
tions, repertoire and price policy, the state of cinema, film
distribution system for “special” segments of the popula-
tion (workers, soldiers, children). The gradual replacement
of the “bourgeois” foreign and Russian pre-revolutionary
films with Soviet films is characterized. The first Sovi-
et films which were particularly popular among the Ka-
zan public are presented. The study is based on data from
the special film journals, and record keeping materials
deposited in the collections of the Central state archive
of historical and political documentation of the Republic
of Tatarstan and the National archive of the Republic of
Tatarstan. The analysis clearly identifies the challenges
facing the Soviet cinema in the 1920s reveal its role
as a special tool of the new Soviet educational practices
and as an integral component of the new Soviet everyday
leisure culture.

METAMORPHOSIS OF JOY, OR A LETTER
TO THE LEADERS OF THE PROVINCIAL CITIES
OF THE USSR AS A SOURCE OF THE HISTORY
OF EMOTIONS 1930s
Abstract. An increased interest in the study of emo-
tions in the Russian historical science requires a clarifica-
tion source base. This article analyzes the possibilities of
375
letters of the Soviet citizens to explore the «emotional his-
tory» of the Stalin era. Emphasis is placed on the corre-
spondence, which was prepared by the leaders of the Party
and State (V.M. Molotov, M.I. Kalinin, G.K. Ordzhonikidze
and others) by provincial citizens in the 1930s. Soviet peo-
ple through the letters to the leaders not only shared with
them negative emotions about the shortcomings of reality
and its unenviable position in it, but also — intentionally
or incidentally - told them about their dreams. Important
among these is the so-called «joy», which, according to
their letters, was in short supply. In general, the study of
the content of the letters of ordinary Soviet people to the
leaders not only recognizes the emotional norms broadcast
to the population, but also reveals the extent of their as-
similation, fixing practices (self letters spelling the po-
wer in individual cases, should recognize such practices),
as well as attempts of reformation and even rejection.
Keywords: The history of emotions, 1930s, letters, the
Soviet people, the leaders, provincial town, everyday life,
emotional standard, sadness, grief, fear, joy, happiness,
love.

“OUR CELEBRATIONS ARE OF A DRY OFFICIAL
NATURE”: SAME ASPECTS OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
PERCEPTION BY COUNTRY TOWNS POPULATION
IN THE 1920s
Abstract. In the article, one of the first attempts in
a domestic historiography is made to research the per-
ception by the population of public holidays in provincial
towns in the 1920th by means of cultural history of emo-
tions. Such an angle of consideration of an official fes-
tive canon in the province assumes a formulation of the
376
question about emotional perception of celebrating. What
moods did people have towards festive dates, what feel-
ings did they have during the actions? To answer the ques-
tions raised the author uses various historical sources:
texts of letters, claims and reports of the people in power,
messages and reports of the «secret services» (GPU and
OGPU), periodicals, diary entries, reports of agitation and
propaganda bodies and provincial commissions for organi-
zation and carrying out holidays. The range and nature of
sources helps to plunge more deeply into the studied era
to reveal the daily world of feelings and emotional mani-
festations of the Soviet person of the 1920s. The author
comes to a conclusion that perception studying by the
population of public holidays by means of cultural histo-
ry of emotions is not only possible, but also is necessary.
It will allow us to understand better the vital world of the
person of the previous era.
Keywords: anniversary of the October revolution, citi-
zens, public holiday, Day of International, cultural history
of emotions, population, daily occurrence, country town,
feelings.
