NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT AT SITE JANOWICE 2 (Marzena Szmyt) 385 SUMMARY 389 AUTHORS 393 Summary Site 2 in Janowice, Wiociawek district, Kujawy-Pomerania province, is situated at the north-eastern edge of the Kujawy Plateau, within its part known as the subregion of the Bobrowniki Plain. It occupies a vast expanse of land between the valleys of two small watercourses that east of the site join into a single larger one, emptying into the Vistula. The site lay on the motorway A1 construction route and for this reason was selected for rescue excavations. The planned motorway route cut across the eastern part of the site with a belt 560 m long and 100-130 m wide. The excavations continued for almost 13 months in 2008 and 2009 and covered 476.6 ares (see detailed information in Chapter 1). The excavations yielded 1,684 nonportable features and a very rich assemblage of portable finds. A considerable part of both portable and nonportable finds dates back to the Bronze Age, the period of Roman impact, the Middle Ages and modem times; these will be dealt with sepa- rately. This volume discusses solely Neolithic finds. Owing to their relative good state of pres- ervation, it was possible to carry out a number of examinations, the results of which are shown in individual chapters, which discuss the natural conditions in which Neolithic settlement took place (Chapter 2) and the distribution, taphonomy and taxonomy of pottery (Chapters 3-7). The subsequent chapters present the results of specialist studies: mineralogic and petrographic of pottery (Chapter 8), those of flint and stone artefacts (Chapter 9 and Chapter 10), animal bone remains (Chapter 11), malacological remains (Chapter 12), plant impressions on pottery (Chap- ter 13) and charcoal (Chapter 14). Finally, Chapter 15 determines the absolute chronology of the settlement sequence, relying on a series of radiocarbon AMS determinations, of which eight refer to the Neolithic settlement. It must be stressed that the study of portable finds was hindered due to their multiple redeposition, resulting from the complex settlement history on the site. This could be seen also in radiocarbon determinations of which some showed changes in depositional and redepositional contexts. The finds discussed in this volume document six phases of site use. The oldest (JAN-A) is related to the populations of the Linear Pottery culture (LPC; Bandkeramik), the second (JAN-B) to the settlers of the Late Band Pottery culture (LBPC). The third settlement phase (JAN-C) coincides with the period when the communities of the Funnel Beaker culture (FBC) occupied the site. The fourth and the best visible settlement phase (JAN-D) encompasses the remains of the Globular Amphora culture (GAC), while the fifth (JAN-E) comprises the traces of the Corded Ware culture (CWC). A possible sixth phase (JAN-F), of a rather indefinite character, is related to Subneolithic groups. Within some phases, subphases could be distinguished, which reflected the fact that, for instance, GAC or CWC groups revisited the site many times. The oldest remains that belong to the LPC (phase JAN-A) comprise above all 27 nonportable features and 2,340 pottery shards. They all represent the classic ‘music-note’ phase (lib in Ku- jawy), dated to ca. 5100-500 BC, but are chronologically varied within an indeterminate range. They were accompanied by few flint artefacts (10 altogether, including 2 endscrapers, a truncated piece, a blade and a flake, all made from chocolate flint, as well as flakes and a splintered piece made from Baltic erratic flint) and stone ones (grindstone). The distribution of the sources was uneven, making it possible to distinguish at most four clusters of settlement remains. The study of terrain geomorphology and feature distribution suggests that in Janowice 2, we are faced with 390 Summary rather dispersed, autonomously-functioning, single-homestead settlements than a single large settlement comprising many homesteads. The most distinct settlement traces were discovered in the southern part of the site, where once a homestead had probably stood, consisting of a Tong house’ and utility and clay pits of various kinds. Its residents for subsistence raised domestic animals, chiefly cattle, which is attested to by bone remains, but used horses as well. In everyday life, they exploited above all local raw materials such us clay, pinewood (less often oak or ash wood), Baltic erratic flint and other erratic rocks; however, they had also access to chocolate flint from southern Poland. What comes as a surprise is the absence of vessels that could be considered ‘imports’ from other regions. This may suggest these residents occupied a marginal position in the system of inter-regional exchange, which was very intensive within the LPC in Kujawy. An unclear character, but rather ephemeral, and possibly connected to the seasonal exploitation of the site, is shared by traces left behind by LBPC populations (phase JAN-B). These amount to 125 pottery shards, 2 stone objects, 18 identified animal bones and a single ground feature (0289). The last-mentioned item may have been the below-ground part of a dwelling struc- ture. These material relics, spread over a large area, testify to multiple, but always rather short, sojourns on the site by LBPC communities. Their subsistence was based on cereal cultivation and domestic animal raising (cattle, pigs, sheep), while hunting played a minor role. To the use of stone tools, a quartzite grindstone and an amphibole schist ard-share testify. Pottery traits and a radiocarbon determination help date the relics to the youngest section of phase I (=lc) of the LBPC. In absolute chronology, the above coincides with 4459-4339 BC (radiocarbon AMS measurement for feature 0289: Poz-83598, 5560±40 BP). To phase JAN-C, 24 features (pits and postholes) and 1,868 FBC pottery shards are related. These materials were spread over a large area. Only 3% of them come from FBC features, the remaining ones were found in the layer and redeposited in features related to other settlement phases. Two source clusters were distinguished, located in sections K and J. One of them (Kl) is a clearly marked concentration of pottery and eight features, situated in the northwest of the space under investigation, while the other (K2) comprises among others seven features and is situated in the eastern part of sections K and M. Outside the clusters, pottery is dispersed in the north of the site. The study of its technology has revealed that Tate classic’ pottery dominated in Janowice 2. Its ornamentation motifs, in turn, relate the examined materials to phase IIIB-C of the FBC in Kujawy (late Wiorek phase), however, with some archaic traits being present (early Wiorek), surviving from phase IIIA. Referring the examined materials to the periodization of the FBC in Kujawy, the chronology of JAN-C may be placed in the period of 3500-3200 BC. It was then that settlements of various forms and lifetime were established on the site. They were semi-permanent or periodical (the remains of which are clusters Kl and K2) and ephemeral, documented by dispersed pottery arrangements. Data on subsistence refer only to the mentioned settlements whose residents ate pigs and emmer wheat Triticum dicoccon. A radiocarbon AMS measurement (from feature K186: Poz-83595,4810±35 BP) for an animal bone redeposited in a CWC feature helps to narrow the lifetime of one of the settlements to 3580-3534 BC. Afterwards, on the site, successive groups of FBC settlers appeared several times, but their settlement forms and time span cannot be determined with any accuracy. The strongest impact on the site landscape was seen in the next settlement phase (JAN-D) during which the site was settled thrice by GAC populations. These settlement waves left be- hind a great number of portable finds (7,900 pottery shards, 2,433 daub lumps, at least 7 flint goods, 13 stone ones, 2 bone tools and 84 post-consumption animal bones) as well as 135 ground features. The last-mentioned include pits of an unknown function as well as supposed cellar-pits, postholes, a clay pit, an oven-pit, hearths, vessel clusters and a well. Furthermore, one possible dwelling feature was identified. The features and pottery form at least three larger concentrations, which were distinguished as subphases. They were located in the south-eastern part of sections Summary 391 E and H (=JAN-D 1), south-western part of section M and the adjacent part of section O (=JAN-D2) and the north-eastern part of section K and the adjacent part of section H (=JAN-D3). Two small- er concentrations may be noticed in the central portion of section K and in section O, but their nature is unclear. These concentrations encompass cellars, pits, postholes, as well as features of more specialized functions such as hearths or an oven, whereas the well is located without. The three concentrations mentioned above are most likely the remains of separate settlements, either semi-permanent or periodic. All GAC source categories were subjected to detailed examinations, but taxonomic findings are based solely on pottery examinations. In this context, vessels fashioned in conformity with ‘classic’ GAC recipes dominate. The recipes provided for the use of ceramic body with a large amount of coarse- and medium-grained crushed stone. However, there is a significant share of traits character- istic of early recipes, with a small number typical of late phases. The study of pottery technology and ornamentation indicates a typochronological diversification of the assemblage and points to a pos- sibility of distinguishing within them structures typical of the GAC phases distinguished in Kujawy: lib (older = JAN-D1 and younger = JAN D-2) and Ilia (= JAN-D3). The taxonomic assessments have been borne out by five radiocarbon AMS datings resulting in the determination of the absolute chro- nology of the GAC settlements: - JAN-D1 = 3017-2927 BC (Poz-83599, 4375 ± 35 BP, dated material: an animal bone from feature E70), - JAN-D2 = 2918-2903 BC (Poz-48820, 4280 ± 40 BP, dated material: a cattle bone from feature M686; Poz-48821, 4340 ± 30 BP, dated material: a cattle (?) bone from feature M822; Poz-48822, 4315 ± 30 BP, dated material: a cattle bone from feature 0171), - JAN-D3 = 2631-2573 BC (Poz-48819, 4055 ± 30 BP, dated material: a bone of black grouse from feature K79). The everyday life of GAC settlement dwellers can be described in part as far as food and raw material economy is concerned. It is known for certain that they used domesticated animals, chiefly cattle, and also other species, albeit to a smaller degree. The use of game was limited, but note has to be taken of the find of black grouse bones in a feature from phase JAN-D3 and a set of mollusc shells in features from phase JAN-D2. Evidence has been found of the use of grasses and cereals, including emmer wheat Triticum dicoccon. Settlement dwellers exploited mainly local raw material resources such as clay, wood (mostly oak wood), Baltic erratic flint and erratic rocks. Only to a small extent could they access non-local resources (chocolate flint and - however with a lower certainty - basalt). Stone raw materials were processed to manufacture mainly multipurpose tools for everyday use: polishing plates, axes, grindstones or slicks. The ritual practices of Janowice settlement dwellers are documented by the finds of clay vessels of a hypothetically ritual character: jars on settlement JAN-D2 and ‘stellar’ base pottery on settlement JAN-D3. It must be stressed that no ritual features with animal deposits have been found, which are relatively often exposed in GAC settlements. The next settlement phase (JAN-E) comprises the relics left behind on the site by CWC popula- tions. Dispersed over a broad area, they include a single feature (cellar - K186), 259 pottery shards (including two beakers), 2 daub lumps and 53 animal bones. The dispersion of the sources and a single below-ground feature argue in favour of the opinion that CWC communities only episodically visited the vicinity of Janowice. The examination of pottery provides evidence that the populations used the area in question twice: in the period corresponding to phase CWC 2 (i.e. after 2800 BC; subphase JAN-E 1) and CWC 3 (2500-2100 BC; subphase JAN-E2). A possibility to make the chronology of older settlement more specific is offered by the radiocarbon AMS measurement of an undefined animal bone from feature K186 (Poz-85755, 4050±35 BP), suggesting the existence of a temporary settlement JAN-E1 in 2535-2492 BC. The sources associated with the Subneolithic (phase JAN-F) are made up solely of a set of remains of 48 vessels. Dispersed over a broad area, they are syncretic in combining FBC and CWC pottery traditions with the traits of eastern European Subneolithic groups (especially the Pripet-Neman and 392 Summary Neman cultures), as well as so-called mixed assemblages (as the so-called Linin horizon). It is diffi- cult to decide, however, if they document the presence of Subneolithic population groups on the site, being the remains of a settlement phase, or are the evidence of indistinct syncretisation processes, taking place when site was settled by FBC and CWC populations. * * * The sources discussed in this volume testify to the settlement activity of Neolithic populations along the eastern edge of the Kujawy Plateau, bordering on the Vistula valley. Owing to the wealth of portable and nonportable sources, obtained radiocarbon measurements and many-sided analyses of environmental and artefactual data, site Janowice 2 will certainly be a major reference point for a comprehensive description of the Late Neolithic in eastern Kujawy.
