* Un ardelean in Marele Räzboi: Albert Porkoláb (1880-1920)
In a historiographic context marked by the Centennial of World War I, in which
the attention of historiographers everywhere has been focused on topics and is-
sues concerning the global conflagration of one century ago which irreversibly
ravaged the old world, the research we propose in these pages risks appearing, at first
sight at least, exotic. This is because the personality whom we wish to discuss can-
not be found in school textbooks or compendia of history, was not among the major
decision-makers during this armed conflict and was not retained by the official or the
academic history of the Great War. Albert Porkolab was among the thousands of of-
ficers who bore the brunt of this “terror of history”, the global war, without his name
being mentioned among the outstanding personalities or in connection with the ex-
ceptional events of the period 1914-1918. Porkolab fought, after all, in an army and
under a flag which were to vanish by the end of the conflict, disintegrating alongside
the state they represented, namely the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Under these circumstances, why should Albert Porkolab, nonetheless, de-
serve to become the protagonist of a historical reconstruction work, one hun-
dred years after the events which he participated in? Romanian historiography
has many other priorities and pressing urgencies, whereby it seeks to honour
the memory of the war and, above all, the centennial of the Great Union. The
editors of this volume consider that the personality of a Saxon officer in Tran-
sylvania - who fought under a different flag and for different political goals
than those that led to the accomplishment of Greater Romania - i s worthy of
the attention of the general public and the historiographers of the 21st century.
First of all, because what Porkolab left for posterity is a collection of. atypical
primary sources, difficult to encounter in such a configuration in the Romanian
public archives: over 300 photos and a few dozen epistolary pieces that cover
nearly two decades (1903-1919) and that deserve to enter the scientific circuit,
given their sheer singularity Few are the cases of participants in World War I
from whom such a large number of photos have been preserved, their vast ma-
jority having been taken during the conflagration years. As the materials that
have reached us pertain to a category of unconventional primary sources, insuf-
ficiently valorised in Romanian historiography, we consider that they provide
us with enough arguments to go beyond the traditional canon of the histori-
ography about the Great War, based on the exceptional nature of the events
and the formidable personalities that could occupy “a place of honour” in the
writings and the historical memory of this watershed in world history. By mak-
ing Albert Porkolab the subject of scientific research, we descend to the level of

that “ignored history”, of the anonymous multitudes towards whom the histo-
rian’s curiosity and interest must open, to be able to assume a “cultural history”
perspective on World War I. Albert Porkoláb was part of the second echelon
of Austro-Hungarian officers, about whom the great historiography does not
provide such ample information as it does in the case of the grand army com-
manders or the heads of states, situated at the apex of the decision-making pyra-
mid, which is why the entry of the photos we are editing in this work into the
scientific circuit would make it possible for a personality and a destiny ignored
thus far by history to escape anonymity
Albert Porkoláb’s military career did not epitomize or illustrate the glori-
ous epic of the Romanian Army during World War I; on the contrary, the real
man Albert Porkoláb, who took part in the war with the rank of captain and
then major in the k.u. k. Infantry Regiment No. 63 Bistrita, fought on the side
of those who resisted the creation of Greater Romania. After the war and Tran-
sylvania’s unification with the Old Kingdom of Romania, he transferred into
the Romanian Army, where he received the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was
a far from singular example of an officer of the Austro-Hungarian army who
decided, after 1918, to cross over and fight under the Romanian flag. Given that
not too many such personalities who came from the defunct Danubian empire
and reconsidered their loyalties are studied in Romanian historiography, we
believe that the presentation of the Albert Porkoláb “case” is interesting, even
innovative, and can contribute to the necessary enlargement of the perspective
through which World War I tends to approached in a period that stands under
the sign of the World War I Centennial.
Last but not least, by drawing the scholars’ attention to Albert Porkoláb,
we may shed light on a less known page of regional and local history, coming
from a Transylvanian town that has a rich historical legacy and a profound
significance in the Romanian consciousness: Násáud. The photographs and the
correspondence that have reached us help us reconstruct the figure of a young
officer in the context of the social and family relations he was involved in. They
present to us a multicultural atmosphere in which people and cultural models
interfered and interpersonal relations did not take into account any ideological
distinctions and segregation in everyday life. The documentary legacy that we
owe to Porkoláb shows us a most interesting sequence of social life, in fact a
snippet in the life of a community that belongs to the historical memory of the
town Násáud.
