Summary
SUMMARY
Mykhailo Boichuk was born into a large rural family In 1882 In the village of Romanivka In Galician Podillia
In 1899, together with the Lviv artist Ya Pankevych M. Boichuk went for six months to Vienna. That same year
he entered the Krakow art school reorganized into the Academy next year. With the financial support of Count Metro-
politan Andrey Sheptytsky studied under professors Herterich orTziol at the Munich Academy. In 1907 he moved to Paris.
He was the founder of two art schools (the first - Parisian or French-Polish, and the second ֊ Kyivan), whose members
received the name of Boichukists after him. Their artistic heritage is rich and diverse. Kyiv students of M. Boichuk worked
in monumental art, ceramics, book graphics, and fabric.
The creator and ideologist of Bolchuklsm relied on the powerful Byzantine painting and other monumental styles,
especially on the early Renaissance (Giotto), as well as on folk art, which was dominant for him. Neo-Byzantine works
brought the artist and his followers the International recognition. The regular exhibition of the Salon des Independents
(5,669 exhibits) opened In Paris in the spring of 1910, and eighteen works were exhibited by Mykhailo Boichuk. Mykola
Kasperovych and Sofia Sehno. M. Boichuk presented small-size compositions Mercy, Girl in Prayer, Aitumn, Dream, Por-
trait of a Man and drawings. The joint slogan “Renaissance of Byzantine art” proclaimed their unity and direction of the
school. Guillaume Apollinaire, Henri Salmon and others wrote about them. The location of these works is now unknown
except, perhaps, the composition by M. Kasperovych The Architect of the Universe, which I saw and photographed in
color.
The archive of Boichuk's friend Yevhen Bachynsky, that provides an insight into the beginnings of his creative work,
is kept in the Library of Carleton University (Ottawa Canada). Trying to capture the early works of M. Boichuk, the author
of the edition made Xerox copies, and in Kyiv, the famous artist Mykola Malyshko reconstructed several works.
At this stage, it is necessary to search for records in Paris and Ottawa as well as to make new photography.
Back In September 1910 at his homeland, M. Boichuk settled In Lviv. He worked asa restorer in the National Mu-
seum (now the Sheptytsky National Museum In Lviv), executed murals in the chapel of the Deacons seminary. Since 1914
was engaged in the restoration of the 18th-century church in the village of Lemeshi, became acquainted with the murals
of cathedrals in Novgorod and Moscow. Wrote several research studies on art history and restoration.
In the years of Independence M. Boichuk settled in the Ukrainian capital. In 1917 he became professor of
Ukrainian State Academy of Art (now the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine). Among the early monumental works of
Boichukists are murals of the Lutsky barracks in Dehtiarivska Street in Kyiv In the spring and summer of 1919 about
two hundred artists performed a tremendous job here ֊ they painted rooms on all four floors of the barracks and stair-
wells with size paints on plaster. In fact, It was a kind of an exhibition of a variety of artistic styles. Sharp, convoluted and
intricate forms of futuristic trend can be seen alongside works of naturalistic school and bright spots of Impressionist
works. The main place among these paintings belonged to Boichukists՛ compositions, especially Tymko Boichuk. In
the frescoes Make Merry, Soul, without Kontusz, Feast, Returning from Plowing, Cutting Bread there Is spontaneity and
genuine naivety inherent in the works of folk art. They (over fourteen works altogether) were photographed by Yevhen
Khoiostenko. During the renovation of the 1922 all these works were destroyed. In the territory of Ukrainian SSR
Boichukism manifestations, especially their monumental works were ruthlessly destroyed: they were the Ukrainian syn-
thesis, which grew from the ancient past of national culture. Since then the biggest problem was the widespread myth
alleging that “he had no works.”
In 1920 the Kyiv Cheka arrested him, but no accusations were presented. Thus is stated in his questionnaire, filled
In the first hours of his arrest In 1936. In 1920-1921, when the artist was in Kharkiv, in his absence, the KGB officers con-
ducted a thorough search of his home, In which was present his student Anastasia Ostrovska When she was summoned
for questioning, she was forced to recall that in 1920֊ 1921 “some correspondence, including in foreign languages” was
confiscated from her teacher. Press harassed and abused him and his students.
In late 1926, along with AndriyTaran and Vasyl Sedliar, Mykhailo Boichuk left for a long travel. They visited several
cities in Germany, then stood for a long time in France. They admired Parisian museums and art exhibitions, Sèvres and
other ceramic factories. In Paris they met with many French artists. M. Boichuk’s wife and his son remained hostages in
the USSR.
The artist highly valued foreign contacts.՝ In the spring of 1928, during the Congress of the Red International of
Labor Unions he went to Moscow, where he finally met Diego Rivera whom he once missed in Paris.
At the end of his life, just trying to survive, M. Boichuk made murals in keeping with the state ideology. These were
the works of socialist realism. The poetics of creativity of “the evil empire” is a separate matter in the history' of art. Trying
to rehabilitate prominent Ukrainian artists, conformists mentioned first of all these, in fact the weakest of his works.
A new stage in the work of Ukrainian muralists became paintings in the Peasants sanatorium in Odessa in Hadzhy-
bei estuary (1928). From those works is frequently reproduced the mural by Mykhailo Boichuk and Antonina Ivanova Peas-
ant Family of New Times. Boichukism became the apotheosis of pre-collective peasant labor.
Paintings of the Chervonozavodskyi Theater in Kharkiv turned into open glorification of the regime, where the direct
organizers of Holodomor in the Ukrainian countryside ֊ the Ukrainian puppet “government" - solemnly marched against
the background of the Dniprohes.
We have the fact that Boichukists' murals ֊ all to a single ֊ were systematically and consistently destroyed, as
physically destroyed were his most eminent disciples M. Kasperovich, V. Sedliar, I. Padalka Repressed were K. Hvozdyk,
0. Kravchenko. His first wife, an outstanding artist Sofia Nalepinska was shot and his son· Petro died early in the war (1941).
His second wife Alla Herburtwith daughter Hania and Vira Drazhevska wife of V. Sedliar, emigrated abroad.
Ch November 25,1936 M. Boichuk was arrested at 12 Komunistychna (now Bankova) St., apartment 47. Seven
records of his interrogation have remained in his case. The record of the artist’s statements during interrogation is unreli-
able. There is the “List of persons to be tried by the Military Collegium of the USSR Supreme Court,” dated June 14, 1937
and endorsed by J. Stalin, V. Molotov, and K. Voroshilov, In the list there are names of M. Boichuk, I, Lypkivskyi, I. Padalka
and V Sedliar (1st category - shooting).
In the culturological aspect an exceptional role was played by the Lviv artist Yaroslava Muzyka Staying in prison,
she kept 52 originals by M. Boichuk of known 78, which she donated to the Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv and the
Lviv Art Gallery (now the Voznytsky Lviv National Gallen/ of Arts). She had also letters of his father (he signed Lev or Levonty)
to Mykhailo Lvových. Therefore, these materials she handed over to her friend, also repressed Stefan Taranushenko, and
the latter ֊ to the State Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts (now the National Art Museum of Ukraine) through the head of the
museum holdings Dmytro Horbachov.
Having worked out various aspects of his legacy, especially book graphics of Boichukists (works by Liudmyla
Sokoliuk), contemporary art history has not resolved purely source-studies problems. It is still not investigated what they
had left behind in ceramics, fabrics, etc., and art studies of M. Boichuk, that is his work as a scholar.
Boichukism as a unique phenomenon of Ukrainian art requires further study, detailed elaboration and gen-
eralization.
The artistic process, called “the Executed Renaissance," through physical and psycho-social extermination
of a whole galaxy of Ukrainian artists by the Stalinist regime, shows the national monumental spirit of their creativity, which
is built on greatness of Byzantinism, magic of early Renaissance maxims of the West and the feeling of innermost layers
of folk art.
Boichukists led by Mykhailo Boichuk played a crucial role in the development of national artistic process
of Ukraine in the first third of the 20th century, which is a remarkable component in the context of European and world cul-
tural spaces. |
