McCarthy
With unflinching honesty and cool, crisp prose, JVLary
McCarthy (1912-1989) transformed the scope and
style of twentieth-century American literature.
Whether writing about sex and infidelity, McCarthy-
ism and Cold War paranoia, or Freudian psycho-
analysis and the psychology of terrorism, she brought
to her subjects a frankness and clarity of vision that
still feel ahead of their time. In the sensational best
seller TThe Group and in other novels and stories she
moved the experience of modern women front and
center, inspiring generations of readers and writers.
Now Library of America and editor Thomas Adallon
present the first collected edition of her fiction, seven
novels and eight classic stories complete in two
authoritative, annotated volumes.
A candid portrait of New York’s pre-war cultural
scene, TThe Cowipurry She Keeps caused a scandal when
published in 1942. Its six linked stories, including the
famous “The Man in the Brooks Brothers Shirt,”
about a one-night stand, follow the fiercely intelligent
Margaret Sargent as she divorces her first husband,
takes a series of lovers, and flirts with political
extremism. Written at the encouragement of her
then-husband, Edmund Wilson, McCarthy’s debut
novel displays the creative fusion of life and litera-
ture--“mutual plagiarism,” she called it that would
become her hallmark.
Even more controversy greeted McCarthy’s second
novel, P he Ousts (1949), a satire about a failed
utopian community populated by characters based
on some of the leading thinkers of the day. The
group divides into two camps-----libertarian purists
led by Macdougal Macdermott (a recognizable por-
trait of McCarthy’s friend Dwight McDonald) and
dissenting realists following Will Taub (her former
lover Philip Rahv)--and quickly descends into chaos
in a savagely comic send-up of Cold War angst and
intellectual vanity.
In the pioneering campus novel 7Ihe Groves opAceieleme
(1952,), set at a college much like Bard, where
McCarthy had taught, literature instructor Henry
Mulcahy, when informed that his contract will not
be renewed, insinuates that he is the victim of a
IVlcCarthyism-inspired witch Hunt. His fight against
this alleged injustice exposes the paranoia and pettiness
of the insular and often absurd world of academia.
IVlcCarthy turned her penetrating eye on marriage
and infidelity in A Charmed Life (1955), the story of
an aspiring playwright, Martha Sinnott, who returns
with her second husband to the New England
artists’ colony where she had lived writh her first. As
she becomes reacquainted with former friends and
with her former husband, iVIartha’s attempt to build
a new life is undone by desire, deception, and self-
destruction.
Rounding out the volume are all eight of iVlcCarthy’s
short stories, four from the 1950 collection Cast a
Cold Lye and four collected here for the first time, as
well as a chronology of her life and career and detailed
notes. A companion volume presents The Grottp,
Hirds of merica, and Can?tibals and ATissionaries.
