Resume
Historical and Current Issues of the Development of Ethnic Relations, Cultures and
Identities in the Ethnically Mixed Region of Northern Moravia and Silesia.
The following publication is one of the closing outputs of the project „The program of
applied research and development of national and cultural identity by the Ministry of Culture
- NAKI, and its called Silesia: Memory - Identity - Region“ The project was held by the
Silesian Museum in Opava during the years 2011 - 2015. Presented monograph provides the
results of one part of an extensive research project. It mainly handles results of sociological
research whose main purpose was to grasp the identity of people living in the Czech part of
the region of Silesia, to find out what constitute this identity, to locate the place of this identity
in the collective memory of local people and to describe the current reception of the Silesian
region. The study try to uncover who considers himself to be a Silesian in present times, which
stereotypes persist in the minds of local people, which historical events and important figures
are associated with the concept of „Silesianness“ (i.e. „being a Silesian“) and what is the relation
of both indigenous people and newcomers to their region. We also examine the interethnic
relations between people of different nationality and language and cultural and social activities
of these people.
Our research was defined by the historical territory of the Czech Silesia which had
a complex historical development and never formed a stable state department. The region was
on the contrary characterized by more or less strong dynamics. In its past, the whole Silesian
region was a meeting place of mutual cultures, languages and political interests of different
European states. As strategically and economically important region, Silesia get through
complicated historical development. Because many power struggles took place in this territory,
Silesia was not such geographically closed area such as Bohemia. However, its geographical,
natural, climatic and historical conditions did not have only negative impact. They had many
positive economic, social, religious or cultural consequences too.
Silesia constitute a region which has been and still is greatly influenced by ethnic and
cultural diversity. The region was populated by German, Polish and Czech inhabitants,
accompanied by residents of other ethnic groups. Their relationships, shaped by variety of
circumstances (economic, political and social), were not easy at all. Factors as the development
of industrialization, population migration or the emergence of new state entities did not only
affect the shaping of the relation of inhabitants to the area and their identification to these
specific regions - they also determinated the collective memory of local people.
Our main source of information were results of extensive sociological research carried
out by the Silesian Museum among residents throughout the region of Silesia in 2012 and
supplied by data from a qualitative research organized in 2014.
Although the theoretical elaboration of the concept of collective memory and identity is
not the main subject of this monograph, we considered necessary to make clear at least the basic
thesis and the contemporary form of discourse in the area at the beginning of each chapter.
We also explain our own approach in examining those problems. Each chapter is therefore
introduced by a theoretical insight into the issue.

The whole text is structured into thematic units. The methodological introduction
is followed by individual chapters in which we demarcate the region of Silesia, give a brief
retrospective look into its past, describe the ethnic composition in the past and today,
characterize the regional identity and collective memory of local people and analyse interethnic
relations at different levels in order to capture contemporary image of Silesia in the minds of
its inhabitants.
The paper offers substantial and relevant descriptive information about the formation
of the Silesian identity and its position in today s Silesian society. We ask what constitute the
collective memory oflocal people and what are relationships between people of different national
identity on different levels. It s obvious that despite an unusually large population migration
during the Second World War and the period of post-war settlement and industrialization (and
despite the marginalisation of the idea of the Silesian identity throughout communist period),
there are still people who are able to identify themselves with the idea of autonomous Silesian
identity, who can locate its geographical position in the territory and who are well aware of the
Silesian history and important local personalities.
The respondents of our research characterized Silesia as a historical territory, a former
political and administrative unit, as a distinctive cultural sphere. They also reflected differences
between the culture, history, lifestyle, language and dialect of Silesia and other regions of the
Czech Republic.
Detailed data analysis showed a great differentiation among the inhabitants of Silesia
in the scale of their identification with the region. This identification was not related only
to a particular place of residence but also to the length of their stay in the region. Residents
who lived in the area for generations considered Silesia as their home region and expressed
emotional attachment to the region. They perceived the region positively as their birthplace, as
a place where they raised a family and where they live with their relatives and friends .
Internal differentiation of the Silesian identity was also associated with the regions
position on the ethnic borderland. A large Polish minority associated their national affiliation
with the Silesia. In the consciousness of many Poles, both identities overlap. Quite a lot of
Slovaks felt differently about their regional identity. They have impression of living in
predominantly Czech environment. The Czech population perceived the Silesian identity as
a regional identity. Mostly Czech and Polish denizens perceived „Silesianness“ also as their
nationality. Especially this part of the population can be regarded as people with a strong sense
of the Silesian identity.
Moreover, the research verified the hypothesis of the age and educational determination
of regional identification. The respondents most significantly identified with the region of
Silesia were particularly older residents (over 65 years) with the highest level of educational
(undergraduate and postgraduate). On the other hand, the youngest respondents (aged 18-24
years) were rather identified with bigger territorial units as is the Czech state and the European
Community.
In terms of the maintenance and further development of the Silesian identity, it s very
positive that the locals actively participate in the cultural and social life of Silesia. Above that,
they are significantly identified with their region which leads to the development of Silesia
identity in new contexts and conditions. They perceived their region positively as their
country, their birthplace, a home where they raised a family or where their parents lived. These

inhabitants of Silesia showed a high degree of stability and strong binding to the region. Their
migration activity was very low. Less than 5% of them, mostly younger people, were willing to
leave the region. Mainly due to socio-economical reasons.
People living in examined region had a particularly positive attitude towards local,
geographically close formations. Less positive was their attitude to larger territorial units (the
Czech state, Europe) and to ethnic groups. They were mostly identified with their birthplace.
The greatest degree of identification with the hometown showed respondents of middle age
and older generation in the area of Tesin and Opava, who lived there from their birth.
There were significant differentiation of opinions among inhabitants of Silesia in question
of their identification with the region. It was linked to the specific place of residence and to the
length of stay in the region. The strongest binding to the region was expressed by denizens of
Opava who rated positively mainly the environment. Similar attitudes were also reflected in the
opinions of Silesians from Tesinsko. On the other hand, the weakes binding to the region was
expressed by the inhabitants ofjesenicko.
The level of satisfaction with life in the given region was connected with certain
socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, such as age and education, and with the
geographical location of the place. Notably people older than 45 years, people with higher
education and higher salary and people identifying themselves with Polish or the Silesian
nationality would not change their residence. The reason why not to move off the region was
the environment, greenery, cleanliness, as well as big variability of cultural and sport activities,
serenity or local architecture.
The existence of the Silesian nationality was agreed mainly by people living in the area of
Opava and Tesin. The higher level of agreement was again mainly among the oldest respondents
(over 65 years), people with the highest level of education (undergraduate and postgraduate)
and of course those who accepted the Silesian nationality as their own.
Citizens of the Czech Silesia reflected the fact that they live in ethnically mixed area. They
accepted the presence of other nationalities and did not have a problem with ethnic diversity.
Bigger tolerance for ethnic diversity of the region showed people belonging to a national
minority. Complaints against citizens of other nationalities related mostly to the Roma who
were percepted as maladjusted. The relations between people of different nationalities in Silesia
after 1989 was rated as good by participants of our research. Not only that the ethnic diversity of
the region was fully accepted, but residents themselves actively participate in the development
of a partnership and friendly contacts with members of other ethnic groups. Ethnic diversity of
the region determined not only relations between citizens but also their binding to the region,
i.e. the formation of a regional identity. There were differences between the binding among the
natives, who were aware of the specificity and diversity of this area, and among people who
immigrate from other parts of the country and did not demonstrate such intense bonding. The
regional identity was completely transformed especially in the area of Jesenik. The degree of
solidarity with Silesia was very low between people from Jesenicko.
With regard to the collective memory, residents of Czech Silesia followed the collective
memory of their ancestors and confirmed a high degree of identification with the region
in which they lived. They highly appreciated important figures of their region, as well as
personalities of nationwide importance. They had quite a good knowledge of historical events

which they perceived in nationwide context. The half of the respondents also demonstrate a
good knowledge of local traditions and customs, with informations gained mostly from family.
Research results confirmed that in the collective memory of the local population are
maintained those events and personalities which were in some way associated with present
and vice versa -events and personalities with whom people do not come into contact; mainly
German personalities, were forgotten. What still remains alive today is the Silesian identity
based on Czech and Polish tradition. On the other hand, German tradition was muted with
the expulsion and displacement of the German population and is no longer an integral part
of the Silesian identity. This fact stems from post-war socio-political events and subsequent
interpretation of the history by the totalitarian regime. Thanks to current research, both public
and academic interest in this issue has risen. It did so in conjunction with the willingness to
deal with a complicated part of local history and the Silesian identity.
The research showed that the oldest generation of native Silesians had much stronger
sense of identification to their region than younger generations. Similarly, the identification of
the original inhabitants was significantly stronger than that of the people who moved in later.
One positive finding is the fact that young people are beginning to care about their roots and
the issue of „Silesianness“. The further development in this way is up to educational and social
institutions.
The existence of the Silesian identity is based on the fact that it persists in the form of
symbols, codes, traditions and socio-cultural patterns of behavior. The inhabitants of Silesia
were aware of otherness of their region. They saw it mainly in a different historical development,
specific culture and traditions. The Silesians differentiated themselves also by the language, the
way of life or by greater religiosity. The issue of „Silesianness“ and the Silesian identity is not
only anachronistic remarks of something from the past. It still play an important role in the
minds of local populations. The region of Silesia as a social structure is based on collective social
identification and numerous activities by which is generated, institutionalized and reproduced.
There is a lot of organizations and institutions in the Silesia (theaters, museums, universities)
which actively support elements of „Silesianness and guarantee further development of the
Silesian identity.
Submitted monograph presents the results of our sociological researches. It is the first
entry into issues, a little piece of a complex mosaic of relationships, values and phenomena that
affect today s Silesia, identity and collective memory of its people. We believe that the study
offers a basis for further reflections on the nature and development of the Silesian identity,
collective memory and interethnic relations in the Czech Silesia and will be helpful in further
exploration in researched area.
