It supplements thirty short films produced by the University of Pardubice (Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities). This pu blication and the short films were produced as a part of the project Idea o f University. By idea of university we mean a broadly considered idea of unity of knowledge and the common ground for various scientific fields. Scien tists and philosophers have been selected to com m ent on many fields of human knowledge, ranging from philosophy, chemistry, biology, physics, medicine, mathematics and electrotechnics to history, anthro pology and theology. The rationale behind this selection is not to cover every scientific field — in only thirty films and chapters this would be hardly possible — but to highlight the extent of variety within the main three focus points: philosophy, chemistry and biology. These fields are typical by interdisciplinary overlap with other fields, and by comparing various personalities of diverse temperament, experience, generation, confession and expertise, we can present the discipline more fully, and thus make the spectator or reader realize how endlessly colourful science and philosophy actually is, and even how the history of sci ence and philosophy is created from personal approaches, interests and choices of individuals. Although all of the people discussed in this volume are experts in their specialized sub-fields, they all share the highest regard for other fields, and stress the importance of education in culture, and they also appreciate interdisciplinarity. This insight into unique personal views was made possible by the oral history method. Apart from these individual traces of the history of science, several common themes stick out throughout these testimonies: Czech history, - 189 - the suppression of the Nazi and Communist régimes, exile, and politi cally motivated distortions of scientific theories. The publication and film series is primarily addressed to university students of all levels, but also to high school students and teachers. * * * The third part of the publication series about important Czech scien tists and philosophers of the 20th century presents personalities from the field of chemistry. The first chapter is devoted to the inorganic chemist, Prof. Bohuslav Brauner (1855-1935), who contributed to the global adoption and improvement of Mendeleev's periodic system of elements. After lively correspondence and cooperation developed between Brauner and Mendeleev, they personally met three times. Brauner's research was focused mainly on exploring the properties of elements associated with Mendeleev's periodic law, and consequently on promoting its international recognition. Brauner also predicted the existence of an unknown element between neodymium and samaria, which was discovered only in 1945 by nuclear reactions and called pro methium. He lectured at the universities of Heidelberg and Manchester, and, since 1882, at the Czech University in Prague, where he was a head of the Department for General, Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. In the next chapter, we are introduced to Prof. Otto Wichterle (1913-1998) through the recollections of his pupils. He was a leading figure in the global development of macromolecular chemistry, parti cularly the development and practical application of modern plastics. His major inventions include the use of crosslinked hydrophilic gels in medicine and other areas, such as the manufacture of contact lenses and implants. During the Second World War, he was involved in the pre paration of polyamide fibers known under the name „nylon". In 1942, he was imprisoned for a few months by the Gestapo. After the war, he worked at the University of Chemical Technology in Prague, where he established the first department of plastics technology. Nevertheless, in 1958 he was forced to abandon this position for political reasons. He became the head of the newly founded Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He manufactured -- 100 - the first contact lenses in 1961, on an improvised machine built from a children's brick-box. In 1968 he actively participated in the prepa ration of the „2000 words" manifesto, and he was also elected as an independent MP to the Czechoslovak parliament of that time. During normalization in the 1970s he was removed from all scientific and poli tical functions, and relegated to the position of an ordinary researcher. Even that did not discourage him from further scientific work. In 1990, he was elected president of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, and from 1993 until his death, he was the honorary president of the Academy. The text reproduced here is compiled from the memories of his students, Prof. Rudolf Zahradnik, Prof. Petr Munk, Prof. Pavel Kratochvil, and Finnish historian of science Dr. Riikka Palonkorpi. The next interview focuses on one ofWichterle’s pupils, Prof. Rudolf Zahradnik (born 1928), a physical and theoretical chemist specializing in quantum chemistry. He is also a former president of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. His life's work is extraordinarily wide ranging. He specializes in the theory of molecular orbitals, applied quantum chemistry, chemical reactivity theory, study of weak intermolecular interactions, molecular spectroscopy, relationships between structure and biological activity, and the theory of relativity. Among his theoretical discoveries is a compound krakaten, named after Karel Capek’s novel. He trained up several internationally recognized per sonalities, such as chemist Josef Michl, Angela Merkel - the current German chancellor - and her husband Joachim Sauer. In 1993-2001, he was appointed president of the Czech Academy of Sciences and was then honorary president of the Academy. As well as his teacher Wichterle, he was awarded with honorary degrees and scientific honours by many global institutions, eg. Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, which he received from Pope John Paul II. The next interview is with a student of Prof. Zahradnik, Prof. Josef Michl (born 1939), who lives and works in the US and, since 1989, also in Prague. He contributed to entirely new knowledge in the field of physical organic quantum and theoretical chemistry. His main speciali zation is nanotechnology. He developed hitherto unknown organic and organometallic compounds and examined their properties. In the wide field of organic photochemistry, chemistry of boron, fluorine, silicon and organometallic compounds and nanotechnology, he has opened up new methods for practical applications in technology and medicine. He studied chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and became the first postgraduate student of Rudolf Zahradnik at the Insti tute of Physical Chemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He was involved in the Prague Spring 1968, and in August 1968 he went into exile. After internships at universities in Denmark and the US, he became a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he works until present. Since 1989, he also partly works at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He is an honorary member of several major international scientific societies, and has received numerous scientific awards. Physical chemist Dr. Michael Heyrovsky (born 1932) tells the story of his father, Prof. Jaroslav Heyrovsky (1890-1967), a Nobel laureate in chemistry for polarography. This original electrochemical analytical method was formulated by J. Heyrovsky in 1922. Polarograph allows practical applications in many fields, and was constructed by Heyrovsky and his Japanese student M. Shikata in 1924. The method developed into a whole new field of science, and Heyrovsky and his colleagu es were constantly developing and perfecting it. The method quickly spread abroad. In 1959, Herovsky won the Nobel Prize for the discovery and the development of polarography. He established the Polarographic Institute at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Institute of Physical Chemistry, which has become a Mecca for researchers from around the world. His son, Dr. Michael Heyrovsky, is a specialist in the field of polarography as well, and has worked his entire career at the Institute. His main research area is new and original approaches to polarography, and its application in physiology and bioorganic chemistry. The last chemist in this volume is Prof. Zdengk Herman (born 1934). He talks about his scientific work in the field of physical che mistry and mass spectrometry as well as his second passion - art. He studied chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University; he worked at the Institute of Physical Chemistry Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Faculty of Chemical Technology in Prague; and at universities in the US: JIIA - Joint Institute for Labora tory Astrophysics, University of Colorado in Boulder, Yale University, - - University of Chicago; then in Japan: Institute for Molecular Science, Okazaki; and Austria: University of Innsbruck. He is an expert on mass spectrometry, as well as the kinetics and dynamics of ion collisions. In 2003 he was awarded the „Czech Brains“, National Prize and the Award of Alexander von Humboldt. In the interview, he describes not only his scientific life, but also his second passion - his artistic life. He is an amateur sculptor (mainly portraits); he makes drawings and cartoons of his colleagues and landscape paintings. Jmennÿ rejstfik A Albrecht, Andy 114 Allensworthovâ (manz. J.
