ROZBÓRZ, SITE 27. A MULTICULTURAL SETTLEMENT
Summary
The site no. 27 at Rozborz in Przeworsk commune,
Subcarpathian voievodship (figs. 1, 2 and 3) came under
an open-area salvage excavation in advance of the construc-
tion of the stretch of motorway A4 between the towns of
Przeworsk and Korczowa. Geographically the village Roz-
borz is found in the south-eastern area of the Sandomierz
Basin. The site itself lies on the slope of an elevation with
a marked northern and north-eastern exposure (fig. 4).
The archaeological excavation investigated a total of
6.83 hectares. The fieldwork was carried out in reference
to a 10x10 m grid laid along the NW-SE axis. The entire
investigated area was stripped mechanically of topsoil to
the depth of approximately 30 cm, followed by a manual
exploration by arbitrary level down to the level of detection
of archaeological features (fig. 5). The larger of these were
excavated using the quarter method (fig. 6), the smaller
ones by half-sectioning.
The findings from the fieldwork completed at Rozborz
27 include over two thousand archaeological features, all
of them listed in the catalogue and mapped on a collective
site plan in 1:400 scale, some of them illustrated on plates
nos. 91-106. The small finds inventory includes close to
three-and-a-half thousand items, all of them listed in the
catalogue, some of the more characteristic items illustrated
on plates nos. 1-90. The largest assemblage of finds be-
longs to the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Culture and Przeworsk
Culture. The second largest group are Early Medieval finds,
followed by finds attributed to the Linear Pottery, the Fun-
nel Beaker and the Mierzanowice cultures.
The archaeological features are the survivors of set-
tlement architecture dating to different periods - struc-
tures that served residential, housekeeping and production
functions. In this group of pits of different size, shape and
depth statistically the largest category are postholes ֊ 1599.
They are elements of larger constructed structures and are
discussed in individual chapters only in that context. The
second largest group are settlement pits - 647 (figs. 7, 8
and 9), followed, in descending order, by fire pits ֊ 44
(figs. 10 and 11), pit-houses - 41 (fig. 12,13 and 14), small
ditches - 10, and finally, a clay extraction pit and a grave,
one each. Most of the features were too poorly preserved
for a more conclusive interpretation of their nature and
function. No remains of a cultural layer were identified.
The fill of the features consisted of dark-coloured hu-
mus; only on occasion it was found to contain fragments
of pottery vessels, other artefacts as well as, daub, charcoal
and bone fragments. The osteological material could not
be analysed at more depth and is presented in table form
only (tables 5 and 6).
Neolithic and Early Bronze Age
The oldest traces of occupation at Rozbórz 27 are as-
sociated with the Linear Pottery Culture and the Funnel
Beaker Culture. Only two fragments of Linear Pottery Cul-
ture pottery were discovered in feature no. 1780, found
in the southern area of the site. Both belong to relatively
large vessels in the shape of an oblate globe cut off at the
top (pi. 7:2). In the north-western area of the site, at a dis-
tance of more than 70 m from feature 1780, several post-
holes were discovered, in an arrangement suggesting the
plan of one, possibly two large constructed features (fig.
15). By their size, shape and the internal posthole arrange-
ment these structures bring to mind the rectangular, long
houses known in the Linear Pottery Culture encountered
in many sites of this culture in the loess zone of south Po-
land (A. Czekaj-Zastawny 2008).
The investigated area yielded also more than 300 frag-
ments of Funnel Beaker Culture pottery (pi. 1-7), all recov-
ered from the fill of archaeological features. Technologi-
cally this is a very uniform group, mostly tempered with
grog (i.e., fragments of ground up pottery), much more
rarely, with sand. The pottery finds are greatly fragmented,
making it very difficult to identify vessel forms, both their
shape and morphology. Nevertheless, three main vessel
types were distinguished: beakers, cups and bowls (fig. 16),
only a small number of which appear to be ornamented.
Seven setdement features (fig. 17; pi. 91) attributed
to the Funnel Beaker Culture include pits of different size
and culture content in their fill (i.e„ the number of pottery
finds). Their layout within the site suggests that the set-
dement was a very large one, formed of spatially autono-
mous areas lying quite a distance apart. Alternately, there
may have been several smaller settlements in our area and
we have succeeded in exposing only their outlying areas.
Given the scarcity of chronologically sensitive forms and
the lack of radiocarbon dates evidence is insufficient to
resolve conclusively the relative chronology of individual
zones exploited by the Funnel Beaker Culture communi-
ty. The only possible logical arrangement would be that of
features recorded using numbers 329, 533, 534 and 553.
With no radiocarbon dates available a closer absolute
dating of the remains of the Funnel Beaker Culture settle-
175
ment is difficult. Moreover, the selection of vessel forms
and ornamentation motifs is too limited to allow more
detailed chronological analyses. All the vessel forms in
the pottery assemblage from Rozborz are known to have
a broad time-frame. In this situation is may be the most
appropriate to give only general chronological indications
for the material under discussion within frames that cor-
respond chronologically to phases II and III of the settle-
ment at Bronocice (J. Kruk, S. Milisauskas 1981; 1983).
Also recorded at Rozborz 27 were some very modest
relics of occupation by the Mierzanowice Culture people
(fig. 17) in the form of a modest quantity of pottery frag-
ments recovered from the fill of two features (nos. 329 and
1453). These small body sherds, without ornament, were
attributed by their technological attributes - the presence
in them a temper of finely ground rock and fine-grained
sand. Presumably, they document activity (agriculture?)
by the Mierzanowice Culture people in the investigated
area (cf. S. Kadrow, J. Machnik 1997).
Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Culture
Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Culture occupation at Rozborz 27
is documented by 77 archaeological features (pis. 92-97,
100, 103 and 105). Most of them are pits of different type
interpreted as the remains of household facilities, serving
storage purposes, which are characteristic for all the settle-
ments from this period (table 1, figs. 18,19 and 20). More
notable features include two fire pits (features no. 281 and
676) and the remains of fourteen postholes.
Small finds attributed to the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Cul-
ture are mostly fragments of pottery vessels (pis. 8-33).
Other than that there were only two clay spindlewhorls
(pis. 23:3; 31:5) and a fragment of an iron knife (pi. 8:3).
The pottery varies in its level of execution. Next to vessels
made of very carefully prepared clay there were wares defi-
nitely made with much less care.
The pottery finds were distinguished into four main
technological groups (see S. Czopek 2007), of which the
largest (70%) is group III: pottery with dark brown in-
ner and outer surfaces, mostly roughened. Other groups
are represented by a much smaller number of specimens.
Groups II and IV have approximate the same number of
specimens, the smallest number of pottery belongs to group
I (tables 2 and 3, figs. 21 and 22).
Most of the recovered pottery fragments come from
pot-like vessels. Other forms include bowls, cup-ladles
and flat disc-plates. Ornamentation motifs appear on on-
ly a modest number of sherds and include, in descending
order: holes below the rim of the pot-like vessels, stamped
motifs and finger impressions. Plastic decorative motifs in-
clude assorted forms of cordons and bosses. There is also
a unique ornament of transversal incisions on the vessel rim.
The dating of the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Culture set-
tlement is established mainly by the pottery finds. Upon
analysis they appear to be fairly uniform in style design,
and consequently, also in their chronology. In general most
of the pottery finds can be dated to the younger horizon
III, that is, the final phase in the development of the Tar-
nobrzeg Lusatian Culture (cf. K. Moskwa 1976; S. Czopek
1989; M. S. Przybyła 2003).
The planning of the spatial layout of the settlement
suggests the existence of at least three discernible zones,
one of these separated from the others by an almost 100
m wide area without any traces of constructed features
(table 4, fig. 23, 24, 25 and 26). The principal functional
element within the area of the settlement is what is under-
stood to be a model homestead, a complex comprising a do-
mestic building and its accompanying household features.
In the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian Culture settlement at Rozborz
27 (similarly as in other settlements of this archaeologi-
cal unit; cf. S. Czopek 2004a; 200; M. Hozer 2009) the lo-
cation of a “household” is identified from the presence of
characteristic clusters of household pits arranged around
an empty area. At Rozborz 27 seven complexes of this de-
scription were identified, the interrelationship between
them indicates that they were separated from each other
by empty areas or areas with little activity.
Roman Period
The excavation at Rozborz 27 also documented the
occupation during the Roman Period by the Przeworsk
Culture people: settlement features that survive of the con-
structed structures of the settlement (pis. 98, 99,101,102
and 105) and small finds recovered from the fill of the ar-
chaeological features (pis. 34-78).
The unearthed remains of the Roman Period settle-
ment may be seen to cluster mostly in the northern and
eastern area of the site (fig. 27). Traces of this occupation
are certain to continue northward, where they were de-
tected also during fieldwork carried out at Rozborz site
28, as well as eastward, in an area not under threat from
development and not included in the plan of research (fig.
28). The buildings of the Roman Period settlement give
the impression of being relatively irregularly distributed
and not too close-knit; the exposed settlement features
differ in size and shape. There were also quite large areas
without identifiable traces of constructed features. None
of the investigated features were found to contain fire pits
or artefacts to confirm conclusively the manner of their
use, making it hard to specify their purpose. The larger,
slightly recessed buildings were interpreted as dwellings.
The layout of the features made it possible to separate
a number of homesteads, which consisted of a dwelling
and household pits. Also indentified within these com-
plexes were posthole structures, their chronology often
not possible to determine.
Despite these difficulties a more in-depth spatial analysis
made it possible to grasp a series of apparent rules in the
176
system of organization of the settlement. The first of these
is that the layout of the unearthed buildings has a fairly
regular East-West alignment. Moreover, the features ap-
parently fall into two groups: ones situated in the more
elevated, loess area of the site, in its central-eastern area,
and others, found in the more low-lying, mostly sandy
northern and north-eastern area of the site. More nota-
ble in the first group are four recessed buildings (features
no. 379, 411, 443 and 472) and a series of pits (features
no. 5, 11, 44, 55, 366, 372, 397 and 711). All the features
in this group were sited on a slope visibly inclined north-
westward, at a similar elevation. Consequently, their lay-
out is evidently in a relationship with the contour lines.
Worth recalling in the context of these findings is the
discovery of the remains of a destroyed Roman Period
cremation grave (feature no. 551). It was also situated in
the loess zone but evidently at a higher elevation, at the
highest point of the investigated site, in its south-eastern
area. Given that it was the only feature of its kind, and
moreover, one discovered about 150 metres to the south
of the boundary of the buildings of the Roman Period set-
tlement, the connection of the grave to the settlement is
hard to interpret conclusively.
Features classified to the second group lying in the
sandy zone include recessed buildings (features no. 170,
182, 228,1187,1191,1474,1475,1498,1759,1793,2274),
a fire pit (feature no. 906), a large clay extraction pit (fea-
ture no. 1383) and a large number of pits of different size
and shape. Similarly as with the first group of features here
also the location of most features appears to be in a rela-
tionship with the contour lines. The lowest lying feature,
situated on the sandy terrace, was the one interpreted as
the site of clay extraction and had several other features
in its neighbourhood.
Dating the Roman Period settlement at Rozbórz 27 is
possible only on the evidence of the pottery finds (cf. H.
Dobrzańska 1990; J. Rodzińska-Nowak 2006; A. Urbaniak
2008). In the group of hand-built vessels a vast majority
can be given a broad chronology of Younger and Late Ro-
man Period. At the same time, some of these forms may
have appeared even earlier, during phase B2, while others
are more characteristic for the Late Roman Period, or even
the early phase of the Migration Period. A much smaller
group of ceramic finds are wheel-made vessels. Their dat-
ing is confined by the time of adoption of this technology
in the Przeworsk Culture, at the earliest, during phase B2/
Cl. In the group of wheel-thrown vessels most forms have
a rather broad dating which takes in both the Early and
the Late Roman Period. The only exception may be some
vessels with a rough surface which are dated within the
older phase of the Late Roman Period. A form which be-
came more widespread in the Przeworsk Culture during
the younger phase of the Late Roman Period are storage
vessels. Their finds concentrate quite visibly in south Po-
land, which corresponds to the large number of distinctive
coarse ceramic wares recorded there (H. Dobrzańska 1990).
They are very frequently encountered in the Carpathian
foothills region of Poland (M. Wilk 2009).
The only non-ceramic find from the Przeworsk Cul-
ture settlement is an iron buckle (pi. 67:4). Buckles of this
form are not a frequent find but nevertheless have a rela-
tively even distribution which covers abroad territory, with
a concentration in the northern area of the Elbe Circle set-
tlement. Their presence in graves assigned to the Zakrzów-
-Leuna-Hassleben horizon establishes their chronology
quite conclusively as phase C2 (R. Madyda-Legutko 1986).
It may be safe to conclude that the settlement at Roz-
bórz 27 was in use during the period when wheel-made
pottery had become widespread across the northern Bar-
baricum, that is during the Younger and Late Roman Pe-
riod. Worth noting is the virtual absence in the pottery
assemblage under discussion of hand-built vessels attrib-
utable to the close of the Early Roman Period and to ex-
change with Dacian cultures.
A separate note must be made with regard to the chro-
nology of the cremation burial discovered in the southern
outlying area of the site. In its case the only chronologi-
cally diagnostic elements would be the fragments of pot-
tery bowls discovered in its fill (pi. 58), but these too have
a broad dating which covers the Younger and the Late Ro-
man Period. They are even known from contexts dated to
the early phase of the Migration Period. A similarly late
dating may be ascribed to the jug discovered in the grave,
of which only a handle survived. It seems therefore that
the burial feature must be contemporary to the Przeworsk
Culture settlement, possibly its final phase.
Early Medieval
The last phase of occupation at Rozbórz 27 is repre-
sented by archaeological material dated to the early phase
of the Early Medieval period. These are the remains of an
Early Slav settlement approximately 1.5 ha in area (exca-
vated archaeologically). The settlement survives in the
form of eleven pit-houses with a hearth and a series of
postholes and isolated fire pits and settlement pits (table
7, fig. 29; pis. 103 and 104). The finds assemblage recov-
ered from the fill of these features is typical for the Early
Medieval period, and consists mostly of fragments of pot-
tery (pis. 79-90).
The pottery assemblage from the Early Medieval set-
tlement at Rozbórz 27 is uniform; all fragments belong to
vessels made of ferruginous clays containing a substantial
amount of temper. There are two types of pottery clay.
One contains mostly - or even exclusively - crushed rock
temper; the other was tempered with a large quantity of
crushed sherds. It is characteristic for pottery from the
Early Slav period and has been observed in other sites in
Poland (M. Parczewski 1988).
All vessels dated to the Early Medieval period are rel-
atively good fired and are hand-built with no evidence on
177
any use of the potters wheel. Based on the surviving rim
and base fragments we can conclude that almost all ves-
sels were jar-like forms gently profiled, with a high-set
shoulder and short neck. The rims were vertical or lightly
everted and the lip straight or rounded.
Beside pottery vessels there were three so-called clay
“loaves” (pis. 89:4; 90:2). All of them were found in a fire-
pit context. This form of clay object is known from many
Early Slav sites; its function is not fully understood. Ac-
cording to one of the hypothesis they may be the function-
al element of the oven. However their symbolic meaning
or even magic function is also possible (S. Cygan 2006;
J. Podg6rska-Czopek 2009).
The Early Medieval finds from Rozborz 27 include
two whetstones made of local Carpathian sandstone (pi.
80:3). Similar whetstones have been encountered in many
sites dating to different periods of prehistory and history,
including also the Early Medieval (M. Parczewski 1988;
S. Cygan 2006). In south-eastern Poland whetstones are
usually made of Carpathian sandstone what is caused both
by its technological characteristics and availability (K. Zytko
1973; B. Radwanek-B^k, B. B^k 1999).
The assemblage of Early Medieval finds from Roz-
borz 27 is fully compatible with other assemblages given
this chronology and recorded in Poland. In the case of the
pottery vessels, both their material, technology and mor-
phology place this group in a large assemblage of finds at-
tributable to the Early Slav phase, in Lesser Poland dated
from the mid-5th until the mid-7th century (K. Godlowski
1979). The presence at Rozborz 27 of hand-built pottery
only, mostly without ornament, with a straight or a light-
ly everted rim, suggests that we have here a record dat-
able to the older horizon of the Early Slav period, dated
from the second half of the 5th century until 6th/7th century
(M. Parczewski 1988).
