Flush from the recent American military victory over Mexico, many Americans celebrated news of democratic revolutions breaking out across Europe as a further sign of divine providence. Others thought that the 1848 revolutions served only to highlight how America's own revolution had not done enough in the way of reform. Still other Americans renounced the 1848 revolutions and the thought of trans-atlantic unity because they interpreted European revolutionary radicalism and its portents of violence, socialism, and atheism as dangerous to the unique virtues of the United States. When the 1848 revolutions failed to create stable democratic governments in Europe, many Americans declared that their own revolutionary tradition was superior; American reform would be gradual and peaceful. Thus, when violence erupted over the question of territorial slavery in the 1850s, the effect was magnified among antislavery Americans, who reinterpreted the menace of slavery in light of the revolutions and counter-revolutions of Europe. For them a new revolution in America could indeed be necessary, to stop the onset of authoritarian conditions and to cure American exemplarism. The Civil War, then, when it came, was America's answer to the 1848 revolutions, a testimony to America's democratic shortcomings, and an American version of a violent, nation-building revolution"--Bbok jacket |

The Civil War, then, when it came, was America's answer to the 1848 revolutions, a testimony to America's democratic shortcomings, and an American version of a violent, nation-building revolution"--Bbok jacket European Revolutions of 1848 fast 1783 - 1899 fast Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1848-1854 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY / United States / State & Local / General bisacsh Nationale identiteit gtt Revoluties gtt Revolution <1848> swd Intellectual life fast National characteristics, American fast Revolutions fast Geschichte Nationalbewusstsein Revolutions Europe History 19th century National characteristics, American Einflussnahme (DE-588)4131701-4 gnd rswk-swf Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Innenpolitik (DE-588)4027058-0 gnd rswk-swf Revolution 1848 (DE-588)4049688-0 gnd rswk-swf Europa USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 s Geschichte 1848-1854 z 1\p DE-604 Revolution 1848 (DE-588)4049688-0 s Einflussnahme (DE-588)4131701-4 s Innenpolitik (DE-588)4027058-0 s 2\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=388871 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
