Abstract
Between the Mace and the Throne. The Crown Army
within the Political Struggle of the Malcontents Faction against
the Court Party between
1669-1673
During the 1660s the use of armed forces in political strife became a per¬
manent part of public life. La the period of military confederations between
1661-1663,
the army s attitude aided the opposition fighting against the pro-
French court of John II
Casimir,
against the concept of an election
vìvente
rege
supported by the King s party. In the following years, the royal court suc¬
ceeded in winning over a substantial part of the Crown and Lithuanian forces.
This sucess did not, however, have any effect during Lubomirski
s
Rebellion of
1665-1666,
as the court party was defeated yet again, but already towards the
end of
1666
the Crown Army in their majority declared themselves in favour
of the court. As a result, at the
1667 Sejm
the opposition party achieved the
reduction of the Crown Army and introduced a new system of financing the
military by local councils. In this manner the opposition was trying to limit
the leverage of the King and his supporters. Jan
Sobieski,
the only Crown
Het¬
man
in office then and a supporter of the pro-French option at the same time,
became the responsible one for implementing of the reduction. Thanks to
Grand
Hetman
many military units located within the zones controlled by the
pro-French party remained on active duty. In
1667
Sobieski
became hugely
popular with the army because of his victory at the battle of Podhajce. The
army s support caused
Sobieski
to become one of the most important leaders
of the pro-French party.
In
1668
John II
Casimir
abdicated and pro-France supporters were plan¬
ning to bring about the election of
Condé, a
French prince, as his successor.
For that reason
Sobieski
and other senior Crown Army officers, tied together
with the Hetmans political option, took action to strengthen their position in
the Crown military, hi spite of these measures, the French party was defeated
during the election of
1669.
The same
szlachta
that had been so far fighting
against the pro-French option, elected Prince
Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki
king. Consequently, the leaders of the pro-French party turned into an opposi¬
tion to the court in
1669,
greatly influenced by the fact that the new King had
chosen a pro-Habsburg option.
From the very beginning of King
Michaľs
reign the former supporters of
France effectively interfered with kings governance. They successfully dis¬
solved the first two
Sejms
and also were able to suck in into their strife a large
proportion of the army
-
which was not very difficult, for at the same time

large numbers of influential opponents were the high ranking Crown Army
officers themselves.
In the spring of
1670
the
Michal Korybut s
court party launched an une¬
quivocal offensive and certainly would have pacified the opposition, but for
the stance of the Crown Army at the camp of
Trembowla.
The armed forces
clearly stood to defend their
Hetman,
whom the King
s
supporters planned
to remove from all held offices. The threat of a confederation led up to a tem¬
porary reconciliation between the King and his political opponents. The latter
seeing their position, stemming from the soldiers support, wanted to cause
the Kings abdication and to replace him with their own candidate, but the
army did not then intend to overthrow the legally elected monarch.
In
1671
the Crown Army took part in a military campaign against the Ta¬
tars and
Petro Doroshenko
s
Cossacks. The court party, apprehensive about
the army, did not allow for the increase of the troops
-
justified by the cam¬
paign needs. The King and his supporters wanted to augment the Crown Army
with military recruitments that would have been more sympathetic to them
(e.g. noble levy, troops of voivodeships, or the Lithuanian Army). This policy
ended in a complete fiasco, and the entire brunt of the military campaigning
had to be shouldered by the Crown Army. It resulted in even a stronger aver¬
sion of professional soldiers to the King. In effect, when the conflict between
the court and malcontents had flared up again at the beginning of
1672,
some
soldiers took part in the unsuccessful attempt to depose the King in June
1672.
Anxious about the oppositions activities the King s supporters formed a con¬
federation at Golab in October
1672
that aimed to deal with the malcontents.
These actions were however ill-advised, especially because since August
1672
there had been war against Turkey that effectively caused the loss of Podolia
with
Kamieniec Podolski.
The Crown Army frustrated by the King
s
inactivity in
the face of Turkish advances, almost in its entirety took part, inspired by
Hetman
Sobieski
and his officers, in a confederation at Szczebrzeszyn in November
1672.
The aim was to annul the decisions made by the Golab Confederation.
Cognizant of the difficult international situation and of the pressure ex¬
erted by the Crown Army, many decision-makers wanted to seek reconcilia¬
tion within the country. In the negotiations the soldiers represented the op¬
position. In March
1673,
through mediation, pacification was reached, and the
united Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was preparing for a military cam¬
paign crowned with a great victory at
Chocim
on November
10-11,1673.
The army of
1672
became in fact
,
through the actions of its officers, an
independent political power that prevented the political system from being
changed (the Golab Confederation articles)
-
and in
1674 -
after the death of
Michal Korybut,
the army fully contributed to the election of their
Hetman
as the new King, -Jan
Sobieski.
