closing words

Vladimir Fedorov, President of
the International Musicology Society (IMS), on
the conclusion of the 101h Congress of the IMS in
1967
in Ljubljana. These words represented inter¬
national recognition for Dragotin Cvetko, the fa¬
ther of the then young discipline of musicology in
Slovenia, who, with a clear vision and a firm will,
had successfully led the specialist and organisa¬
tional realisation of the international musicology
congress, only the second congress realised by any
discipline in Slovenia. While Dragotin Cvetko s
presence at international congresses, symposia,
universities and radio stations (in addition to
all of the internationai scientific and specialist
publications) until
1960
represented the gradual
achievement of the steadfast goal of establishing
musicology in Slovenia within an institutional
framework, the time after the Ljubljana congress
represented the confirmation and strengthen¬
ing of the institutionalisation of the discipline in
evropski
in
svetovni prostor. Izhodišča za
utemeljevanje muzikologije
kot
znanstve¬
ne discipline je Cvetko
postavil že
s svojimi
prvimi monografijami
ter
znanstvenimi pri-
spevki, nedvomno pa je izid obsežne Zgo-
dovine glasbene umetnosti na
Slovenskem
pomenii
temelj,
vodilo in
odskočno
desko
všem nadaljnjim raziskavam, ob katerih
so
se
razvijala
ter
se še
danes
razvijajo vedenja
in spoznanja o zgodovini
slovenske glasbe
in
glasbe na
Slovenskem.
Cvetko je torej
idejno, vsebinsko
in
metodološko
začítal
okvire, ki
jih
je mlada, postopno razvijajoča
se stroka bodisi širila
in
krepila bodisi preo-
blikovala
in spreminjala.
Ustanovitev oddel-
ka za muzikologijo na Filozofski fakulteti
v
Ljubljani leta
1962
je nedvomno pomenila
zmago strokovnega argumenta,
vendar
še
zdaleč ne končane bitke na področju institu¬
cionalnih vprašanj slovenske muzikologije.
Vzporedno z vsemi svojimi večplastnimi
de-
javnostmi je Cvetko vztrajno zasledoval ide¬
jo
o ustano
vitvi Muzikološkega instituta pri
Slovenski akademiji znanosti
in
umetnosti,
ki jo je formalno dosegel leta
1972,
prostor-
sko
in
organizacijsko pa sele leta
1980.
Zelo
dobro se je zavedal pomena
in
teže znan¬
stvenih publikacij, revij
in zborníkov, saj
je
vedel,
da so le-ti osebna izkaznica,
ogledalo
in
dokaz
delovanja katerekoli
stroke.
O tem
priča
dejstvo,
da je prav Cvetko
v
50.
letih
prejšnjega stoletja dal pobudo Muzikološke-
the European and broader international spheres.
Cvetko
had already created the point of departure
for the establishment of musicology as a scientific
discipline with his first monographs and scientific
articles, but it was undoubtedly the publication
of the extensive Zgodovina glasbene umetnosti
na Slovenskem
(The History of Slovene Music)
that represented the foundation, the guiding light
and the springboard for all further research with
which the knowledge and findings about the his¬
tory of Slovene music and music in Slovenia de¬
veloped and continues to develop today. In terms
of concept, content and methodology, Cvetko thus
outlined the frameworks that the young, gradu¬
ally developing discipline then either expanded
and strengthened or transformed and modified.
The establishment of the Department of Musico¬
logy within the Ljubljana Faculty of Arts in
1962
undoubtedly represented a victory for the special¬
ist argument; however, it was far from being the
final battle in the area of institutional questions
regarding Slovene musicology. In parallel with all
of his multifarious activities, Cvetko tenaciously
pursued the idea of founding a Musicological
Institute at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences
and Arts, an idea that was achieved formally in
1972,
but only realised in terms of premises and
organisation in
1980.
He was well aware of the
significance and weight of scientific publications,
journals and proceedings, as he knew that for any
discipline these represent its personal identity

who, in the
1950s,
provided the initiative to the
Musicology Institute of the Serbian Academy of
Sciences and Arts to publish its
Zbornik
(An¬
nual). Thus the establishment of the Slovene
scientific journal
Muzikološki zbornik (Musico-
logical Annual) in
1965
can be understood as a
logical consequence of the institutionalisation of
the discipline, while the collection
Monumenta
artis Musicae Sloveniae (Monuments of Slovene
Music), established within the framework of the
Musicological Institute in
1983,
can be seen in the
same light.
Cvetko realised the international recognition
and reputation of the Slovene musicology profes¬
sion on many fronts: he participated in numerous
international conferences, where he established
contact with internationally recognised specia¬
lists and presented his own findings and research,
primarily from the area of the history of Slovene
music and the music of the Yugoslav region; he
ensured that certain of his monographs were pub¬
lished in foreign languages; he introduced the his¬
tory of Slovene music, with all of its excellent re¬
presentatives, in foreign

that the Slovene profession joined other inter¬

Dragotin Cvetko made a profound impression on
the broader sphere of the humanities in Slovenia.
Of no less significance was his role in the sphere of
musicology in the other republics of former Yugo¬
slavia, where, just as in Slovenia, he was regarded
as a doyen and authority in the discipline of mu-

self to us as a multicoloured, tightly woven net¬
work, in which all of the threads lead expediently
and thoughtfully to the goal. Thanks to him, these
threads have been taken up by the younger gen¬
erations of musicologists, generations for whom
he established firm foundations, while ensuring
Slovene musicology a name, recognition, respect
and international standing.
