Summary
Three times in the years
1917-1919
Ukrainians proclaimed or re-established
their independent state
-
the Ukrainian People s Republic. And three times
it was responded by Russia with aggression. The next attempt to regain
independence, this time in an alliance with Poland, was undertaken in
1920.
In April of that year the Polish-Ukrainian political agreement on a common
fight against Bolshevik Russia and the military convention governing the
mutual obligations in this war was signed in Warsaw. It also sanctioned the
organisation of a number of Ukrainian troops which had already begun,
including the 6th Rifle Division. The decree sanctioned it, because the basis for
the commencement of forming divisions was the Polish-Ukrainian declaration
of
2
December
1919.
The formation of the Ukrainian Rifle Division began in February
1920
in
a camp in
Łańcut,
and since March continued in Brest-Litovsk. To do this, the
Polish military authorities set up a branch of Ukrainian Affairs, which dealt
with organisational issues, weapons, equipment and help in the training of
the Ukrainian units. From the Ukrainian side the organisational matters were
dealt with by the Military Section of the Ukrainian Diplomatic Mission to
Poland, and later by the Ukrainian Military Mission. The cost of equipment
and maintenance of the Ukrainian troops formed on the Polish territory was
covered by the Ukrainian government.
Lieutenant-Colonel
Marko Bezruchko,
a staff officer of the recently
deployed Corp of the
Sich
Riflemen was designated as the commander of
the new division. Since many other officers of the Corp of the
Sich
Riflemen
joined the new division the term
Sich was
used in its name
-
the
6* Sich
Rifle Division. It was formed from the Ukrainian internees and POWs held
in camps on the Polish territory. Only the people aware of their choice were
accepted in the new division. It was a small unit, numbering on average two
thousand soldiers. Due to a large number of officers it was a personnel unit.
In late April and early May
1920
the 6th Rifle Division, as part of the 3rd
Polish Army, took part in the campaign against Russia
-
the so-called Kiev
Offensive. At this stage of the war, however, it fought no battle
-
it entered
Kiev without a fight. It demonstrated its combat value in June, July and August
of this year during the retreat from the capital of Ukraine
-
in the battles of
Ihnatpol, at Perha and by the River
Styr.
It also took part in fighting near
Chełm
and
Krasnystaw,
and it was particularly distinguished in the defence of
Zamość
against the attacks of the Cavalry Army of S. Budyonny.
At the beginning of September the 6th Rifle Division moved over the
Dniester, where it was incorporated into the Army of the Ukrainian People s
Republic. From mid September until almost the end of November it took
part in the autumn campaign against Russian troops in Eastern
Galicia
and
Podolia. But when in October Poland concluded an armistice with Russia,
which indicated breaking of the April settlement, the Ukrainians were left
alone on the battlefield and were unable to resist the enemy forces. In these last
struggles the 6th Rifle Division suffered significant losses. In late November,
together with other Ukrainian troops, it was forced out to the west, behind the
River Zbruch.
Moving to the territory controlled by the Polish authorities meant
internment in the camps. The 6th Rifle Division stayed first in
Aleksandrów
Kujawski,
where military training was conducted, extensive cultural and
educational activities were developed, the press was issued and a religious
service was delivered. In the autumn of
1921
some of its soldiers took part
in the guerrilla group incursion into Ukraine. Soon the internees were moved
from
Aleksandrów Kujawski
to camps in
Strzałko
wo and in Szczypiorno near
Kalisz.
The number of its soldiers was constantly declining, and the Division
was twice reorganised. Its dissolution was accelerated in
1922
by the release of
the permission for the officers to leave the service. The Division finally ceased
to exist with the liquidation of the last camps in
1924.
Thus, the soldiers of the 6th
Rifle Division, interned in late autumn of the
1920,
became civilian emigration.
All these stages of existence of the 6th
Sich
Rifle Division indicated in the
subtitle of the book

in this book. It is preceded by a description of the activities of the Military
Section and the Ukrainian Military Mission in Poland, and it is complemented
with the calendar of the events, the description of the publishing activity
and the biographies of the officers. The paper is complemented with the

and geographical names.
