Musica figurata
ad usům publicum,
which is a paraphrase
of the essay by
Krzysztof
Baculewski, on one hand refers to his work, emphasizing its originality and variety of in¬
spiration, and on the other indicates the purpose of this study, which is to propagate his mu¬
sic. But most important is the entire context, contained in the subtitle
-
a look at the issues re¬
lated to performance from the conductor s perspective, to whom the composer entrusted the
world premieres of most of his vocal compositions, some of them dedicated- These remarks
apply not only to the works described in the book, but are intended to possess a broader, uni¬
versal character which maybe useful, both for
future
performances of
Krzysztof
Baculews¬
ki s compositions, and for conductors and vocalists involved with choral music in general.
Therefore, in addition to chapters justifying the choice of the subject and presenting the
composer and his creative output against the background of trends and tendencies in Polish
music (introduction and chapter
1.),
the core of the work are the analytical chapters related
to select compositions (chapter
2. )
and dealing with the aspect of performance (chapter
4. ).
The interpretive analysis is derived from the harmonic and formal analysis, and supplement¬
ed by general observations about the recordings.
Chapter
3.
characterizes the composer s vocal music, by pointing to its formal logic, rich
harmony, often utilizing the effect of tonal centralization, harmonic complexity, rhythmic and
melodic diversification, and the inspiring role of text containing a deeply humanistic message.
First and foremost, however, it draws attention to the erudite music of
Krzysztof
Baculewski
and his thorough knowledge of compositional technique that allows him to move seamlessly
from one style to another while conceiving interesting timbres and textures. The second sec¬
tion of chapter
3.
undertakes the problem of inspiration, whose source for the composer is
literature, poetry, culture, and a fascination with antiquity. In his works we find strictly mu¬
sical fascinations: reminiscences of the music of Johannes
Brahms, Gustav
Mahler,
Bela Bar¬
tok,
as well as
Purceii,
Handel and Bach.
The book is complemented by appendices containing the full documentation of
Krzysz¬
tof
Baculewski
s
accomplishments, including a catalog of his works, archival recordings and
CDs, composition awards and prizes, rich scholarly activity, his selected reviews dealing with
his music, as well as lyrics of the songs discussed and the description of the
Krzysztof
Bacukws-
ki. Choral Varies album.
