| Abstract: | The method of investigation is a structural analysis of landscape painting, especially the series paintings of Claude Monet in the perspective of the categories of time and space. The diagnosis is a development from the optical impression of the moment (classical impressionism) passing by a succession of temporal states in the series to a unification of time and space in an image of the cosmos in the Nymphéas series. Thereby interrelationships and structural analogies between the artistic thinking of Monet and several fields of the cultural context, especially science and philosophy are investigated. In particular striking similarities between the philosophical conception of Henri Bergson and the artistic thinking of the late Monet can be observed. Bergsons unification of time and space in la durée, the conception of creative development in élan vital and intuition as a method of empathic contemplation of changing life are analogous to the late series of Monet. In a certain sense, the artistic thinking and the methodical approach of the late Monet can be understood as an intuitive, holistic, philosophical analysis of reality by artistic means. Moreover, a similar view of the world is constitutive of Japanese landscape painting and Buddhist philosophy, the former being dear to Monet. Apart from the gained insight into the artistic thinking of Claude Monet in particular, the analysis is a new approach of comprehension of the development from Impressionism to Post-Impressionism in general. |
