and the City explores how the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
.ZVreconceptualized urban space. Fresh readings of key Romantic works join studies of genres
and chapters on cultural issues in showing how concerns with urban life shaped both individual
works and broad theoretical issues in European Romanticism. In a long-standing critical milieu
dominated by assumptions about the movement s valorization of the rural, of untrammeled
nature, and of the noble savage, this expanded view of Romanticism and its often ignored
preoccupation with the urban, its landscape, and its metaphorical power, helps model an
innovative Romantic citypoetics, making an argument for the necessity of understanding
Romanticism in terms of the dominating urbanization of our own day.
