Summary
The book is dedicated to
Jan Kustos
regarded to have been the leader of the separat¬
ist movement in the mid-war Silesian district. Despite quite short life (he lived for nearly
40
years) he was undoubtedly an active politician of the Upper-Silesian political scene at
the beginning of the 20th century. During his political activity he was known as a journal¬
ist and the editor-in-chief of
„Głos Górnego Śląska
(
Voice of Upper Silesia). He also en¬
gaged in social and political works (lead the Association of Polish Upper-Silesians later
transformed into The Association of Defense of Upper-Silesians, he was also a councilor
in Katowice). Even though throughout his life he remained a secondary figure, he im¬
pressed a stamp on upper-silesian reality. Since he is still not a well-known person, filling
in this blank became the most important objective of the research.
This work consists of four chapters. The first one describes the period since his birth
through shaping his social and political views until the time he came back from emigra¬
tion outside the Silesian district and reached full maturity at the end of
1921.
The next
chapter shows

at the beginning of „Katowice period of activity in social, politi¬
cal and journalistic fields (time from
1922
to
1925).
It contains different aspects of shap¬
ing the movement called separatist on the territory of Silesian district, where
}. Kustos
became the unquestionable leader. The third chapter covers the years
1926-1932,
which is
the period starting with the greatest triumph of J. Kustos s group and
Kustos
himself
-
the election of members of The Association of Defense of Upper-Silesians (including
J.
Kustos)
to town councils in the Silesian District. This period ends with Kustos s death
and disintegration of his group. The fourth chapter is not as focused on biographical facts
as the previous ones but attempts to show the ways in which J.
Kustos
presented his
views, his oratorical and journalistic skills, and finally his reactions to his political oppo¬
nents. This chapter tries to answer the question whether his actions were effective.
Since J.
Kustos
is commonly associated with upper-silesian separatist movement this
work tries to look into his ideas and analyze them, attempting at the same time to answer
the question whether he can be regarded as a separatist and if the thesis functioning in
historiography is an appropriate one.
