SREBRENICA
XIV-XV
CENTURY
Summary
A very large settlement of people from
Dubrovnik
developed in Srebrenica,
contributing to the preservation of several records about its progress in the
sources of the
Dubrovnik
Archive. This monograph, including the results of
hitherto research, is principally based on the systematically collected material
trom
several series of the
Dubrovnik
Archive.
Like other city settlements in the interior of the Serbian and the Bosnian
state, Srebrenica appeared much later than some other cities in the Balkan region.
J
his did not occur until the development of mining in the mid-XIII century, the
opening of silver mines and subsequently of auriferous silver
(Novo Brdo)
in
Serbia, and a silver mine in Bosnia in the following century, which encouraged
their formation. At the same time, this progress was directly connected with the
decline in European production and, from the mid-XIV century, with the increase
w
the demand for silver on the European market. It was in the mid-XIV century }
that Srebrenica appeared not far from the mining town of Domavija, seat of the |
Roman mining administration. The mine s rich silver deposits also led to the
settlement getting its name (silver
-
srebro).
The birth and economic development of Srebrenica. The initial data on
¿
Srebrenica already in the mid-XIV century refers to the presence of merchants
f
from
Dubrovnik.
As silver production increased, there were more and more of I
tflern each day. By the end of the
XIV
century, Srebrenica had already become
/
a flourishing economic centre with a large settlement of people from
Dubrovnik
;ΐ
and an increasing number of local traders. Once it had started, the mining industry
¿
continued to grow, and after the transfer of Srebrenica to Serbian rale in
1411. %
«
became the chief centre of the mining district, in which several smaller mines
w»e opened
(Sasi,
Pećište, Čagalj).

Mining and metallurgy were organised in much the same way as in the
j
other mines in Serbia and Bosnia, and settlements of the same type in Western
%
Europe in those times. The high level of production was reflected in the high
{
demand for miners from Srebrenica, as outstanding experts even beyond the;
f
country s borders. There is renewed mention of the mint for producing coins
f
that had operated earlier during the reign of King
Tvrtko
I, in the time of Despot
ŕ
Stefan
Lazarević
in
1417.

The rapid progress made in mining also led to flourishing commercial ties.
/ξ.
I The chief pillars in the silver trade were still the merchants of
Dubrovnik^We;?
h
know the names of several
Dubrovnik
merchants, thanks to whose mediation
ι
a
Џ
large quantities of silver from Srebrenica were dispatched to Venice and,
fromg^
U
there, into the broader network of European trade.
·-■■ . . -.. ■ *
:jr

I In addition to the merchants from
Dubrovnik,
in the first half of the XV ;J|
«ì
century, local inhabitants took an increasingly active role in trade. They adopted;
;
viali
the contemporary kinds of commercial and financial transactions and trading f
:
instruments (commercial societies, promissory notes, letters of procuratory) that
л
í;rwere
created under the influence of
Dubrovnik,
that is, the Mediterranean. Trading
■ ■
Л
was based on credit, which the local population raised: from; the
Dubrovnik,
ŕ
{merchants and, thus, Srebrenica gradually grew into
ä
centre of trading on credit,
і
?Às
imports increased, it became not only a centre for the exchange of commodities
but more and more of a consumer centre. This stimulated the formation of a
market for agricultural produce and a more active exchange of goods with the
inhabitants of the surrounding villages. These villagers gradually joined in the
network of credit transactions and were drawn into goods exchange and monetary
relations.
Compared to the
XIV
century, progress was also noted in the handicrafts
and so in the sources from the first half of the XV century, we encounter
16
types
of crafts. This is a far greater number than in the other mining settlements. Even
so, Srebrenica was primarily a mining and commercial and only then, an artisan
centre. And this can also be said of the other urban settlements in the interior of
Serbia and Bosnia.
і
_
The population and social structures. The economic progress of Srebrenica
f
in the first half of the XV century led to a swift population increase. There are
;
grounds to believe that at its peak, the number of inhabitants was in excess of
3.500.
Therefore, the size of Srebrenica ranged above the average for the Balkan,
that is, the European towns of that time. However,
Novo Brdo,
famed for its
auriferous silver, the largest mine in the Balkans at that time, had between eight
and nine thousand inhabitants. The particular importance of Srebrenica and
Novo Brdo
is observed in the fact that, as compared to other mining settlements,
«contemporary sources called them (civitas,
zita)
and their inhabitants, citizens
(civis
Srebernize,
civis
Nouimontis).
:;
Of all foreigners, the majority were certainly from
Dubrovnik,
and they had a
»specific, legal position. The Serbian and Bosnian rulers, guaranteed with charters,
I j
their freedom of trade, judicial autonomy and freedom of religious expression.

Several members of noble families resided in Srebrenica. Just like in
Dubrovnik,
the
Gučetić
(Gozze) family was the most influential. All the nobles took part
in the work of the judicial commissions, either as consuls or as judges. Several
commoners from
Dubrovnik
were successful traders in Srebrenica, testimony of
which is to be found in their business biographies.
Nevertheless, the majority of the urban population of Srebrenica consisted
of local people, who, as opposed to the people from
Dubrovnik,
did not all enjoy
the same legal status. Among them merchants, who distinguished themselves for
their wealth and their participation in the administration of the city, improved their
position in relation to the feudal environment only when they acquired citizenship
of
Dubrovnik.
In fact, the names of many people
(2.196),
who were to be found
on the list of citizens of
Dubrovnik,
were members of the domicile population
from Srebrenica, mainly merchants. Even though not legally or formally, they
truly and substantially constituted the local citizenry. In that way, the composition
of the
Dubrovnik
settlement in Srebrenica gradually changed so that in the first
half of the XV century, a large portion of it consisted of local inhabitants.
The urban setting. The progress of mining and trade in the first half of the
XV century was reflected, in a large measure, in the formation of urban structures
and in changes to the appearance of the town. First of all, the expansion of this
town called for its additional fortification and protection with a castle (Srebrenik).
The entire settlement was intersected by mine-shafts, mills and other mining
installations, evidence of which is to be seen in the toponyms and written sources.
Due to air pollution and the threat to the health of the citizens, the people of
Dubrovnik
insisted with Despot
Đurađ Branković
on moving the foundry (kola),
otherwise in the centre of the settlement, out of town. This is the first and earliest
record of the problems of pollution in the human environment. Similar attempts
did not exist at other mines. A square was created in the centre of the settlement,
)
surrounded by houses belonging to the people from
Dubrovnik,
and the street
ì
that led to the square was called Merchant Street (vw
di merchadó),
the only
known name of a street in our regions, in the Middle Ages. Shops existed in
¿
Ље
houses where people lived and thus, Srebrenica became similar to the type
°f West European town, and differed from the Oriental type. Besides an inn for
;
travellers, a tavern was said to exist, as did a mint, a customs house, as well as a ?
leprozorium
(a refuge for lepers) at the Franciscan monastery. Srebrenica was the
°и1у
known town where a sewage system had been installed.
ţ
The people from
Dubrovnik
did not live in houses concentrated together in
Srebrenica nor did they live in a separate quarter for foreigners, as the custom was
m
the West. Regardless
ofthat,
the people from
Dubrovnik
spread their roots in
Srebrenica, which one can see from data on the construction of expensive tombs
]n Srebrenica, next to the Church of the Blessed Virgin.
:
It was possible to distinguish the elements of local city government, inherited
from the Saxons in Srebrenica, by the second half of the
XIV
century. Otherwise,
this was an essential characteristic of urban settlements with a developed mining V
ndustry. The city council consisting of twelve citizens
-

borghesani, citadini,
some of them local inhabitants, together with
a knez
and,
later, in the time of the
Despoiate,
with
a voivoda,
conducted all the city s affairs.
However, in spite of the further promotion of the city s autonomy, not even in the
first half of the XV century was there an assembly hall, which in the European
cities represented a higher form of local government. According to.the records,
court cases were tried in the private residences of Srebrenica. The sources mention
the seal of the city of Srebrenica
{la boia del luogo)
and special measures for
weights
{pondus de Srebrenizà).
;
The local folk gradually replaced the Saxons in Srebrenica but they continued
to rely on Saxon traditions in mining technology. With the development of goods
; exchange, the door opened to new influences from various sides. The strongest
І
among them came from the West, that is, from
Dubrovnik
and from the Italian
%
towns, first and foremost from Venice. They penetrated all segments of daily
ΐ
life, from the Western European method of trading and monetary transactions to
,
material culture (cloth, costume, jewelry, and many other items). These influences
¡could be remarked even in architecture. The Church of the Blessed Virgin and
the Franciscan monastery had features of the Gothic style. However, parallel to
this, some local specificities also emerged, for instance, in the ornamentation on
¿clothing in the Srebrenica fashion {admodum
de
Srebrenize).
I The rapid economic progress of Srebrenica and the increasing scope of;
, business in the western style was an additonal stimulus to the development of C
5
literacy and the art of calculation. As regards literacy, Cyrillic was used in all *
aspects of life in medieval Serbia and Bosnia, especially in urban settlements.
■■
Several accounts from the
Dubrovnik
Archive confirm that in Srebrenica,
I documents were written in the Serbian language and in Cyrillic. Besides the
)
Latin alphabet, the
Dubrovnik
merchants largely used Cyrillic, even in their inter¬
personal communications. Some local merchants probably knew both alphabets.
■■
In contrast to
Novo Brdo,
Srebrenica did not have any significant traces
f
of cultural activities. Only one man from
Dubrovnik,
a resident of Srebrenica,
possessed texts by ancient, classic authors among his books. Apart from
ecclesiastical literature, the Franciscan monastery probably possessed books with
other contents. The highly prominent philosopher and theologian, Franciscan
imonk
Đuro Dragišić
came from Srebrenica.
ЇГ^ ?
Parallel with the development of the mining settlements in the territories
V of Serbia and Bosnia, Catholicism became consolidated and Catholic churches
were built. The circumstance favouring this was the fact that Saxon miners and
merchants from
Dubrovnik
formed the core of these settlements, at least in the
t
beginning, and they constituted a Catholic population. As time went on, the
Ї
people from
Dubrovnik
gave all kinds of support to the Catholic churches in
the economic centres of Serbia and Bosnia. And these, at the same time, served
?
them as a reliable pillar This cooperation came to full expression in the case of
the Franciscans in Srebrenica, whose activities were already well-known from
1361.
Compared to the other Franciscan monasteries, the one in Srebrenica
Средњовјековна

distinguished itself for its significance and influence. The people from
Dubrovnik
contributed a great deal to this with large arid continual donations.
There are also testimonies of the
Dubrovnik
Archive regarding the Orthodox
Church and the Orthodox population in Srebrenica.
Srebrenica in the history of the Balkan cities. A separate topic which deals
with the similarities and the differences in their development.

represent a separate whole.
Among the towns in the interior of Serbia and Bosnia that came into being
as a result of the mines- Srebrenica is to be singled out for its economic progress
and urban development. And, it was one of the most advanced urban centres in
the powerful process of urbanisation that was in progress in these territories in
the first half of the XV century. As time passed, in addition to local specificities,
Srebrenica acquired many features of other European towns in those days.
Particularly striking were the social processes that tended towards the formation
of a local citizenry and, coupled with this, new types of labour, and a way of
life that differed in many aspects from its feudal surroundings. This process in
Srebrenica, like in other urban settlements of the same category, was forcibly
interrupted with the fall of the Serbian
(1459)
and the Bosnian
(1463)
states to
Ottoman rule.
