SUMMARY
assimilation of Czech immigrants had been largely completed.
As a result, the function of the periodicals was transformed, with
English becoming more prominent in them. Most of the current
immigrant periodicals are only published in English.
Czech immigrant journalism in the United States in the 19th cen¬
tury was not only a platform for the essential self-awareness of
the immigrants, but also a representative and reliable record of
their gradual assimilation, continuously reflecting the compli¬
cated process of national, social and language integration into
the target country, so vastly different from their original home
in terms of social, political, ideological, economic, cultural and
language parameters.
Owing to its role as an authentic document of the history of
Czech immigrants in the United States, Czech immigrant journa¬
lism attracted the attention of a number of scientific disciplines.
Accordingly, the present study of the 19th and
20th-century
Czech-
-American press employs an interdisciplinary approach, although
the original interest was largely linguistic. The study focused
on the Czech language and its development in the multilin¬
gual environment of America, manifested in the official written
form in Czech-American periodicals. Deepening insight into the
problem revealed that a narrow linguistic, stratificational and
comparative analysis of the texts was insufficient, and that in
order to capture the immigrants ideological development and
their gradual assimilation in the new country a broadly con¬
ceived interdisciplinary communicative approach had to be
employed, including aspects of history, ethnography, sociol¬
ogy, psychology and journalism. This broad basis was used to
analyse the thematic and semantic aspects of the texts and to
interpret them in sociolinguistic, social-psychological and lin-
guo-political terms.

Chapter II is devoted to the causes, types and chronology of
Czech immigration in America and includes a bibliographical
survey of relevant Czech, and partly also foreign, sources.
Chapter HI explores social, ideological, cultural, and commu¬
nicative aspects of Czech immigrant life after arrival in the USA,
while Chapter IV surveys the general functions of Czech immigrant
press in America in the 19th century and describes the methodo¬
logy of research employed in this monograph.
Chapters V, VI and
VII
introduce the principal Czech-American
periodicals, newspapers and magazines published in the sepa¬
rate decades of the second half of the 19th century, and describe
the developing functions of Czech immigrant journalism in the
gradually assimilating Czech enclave.

conclusions gained by the communicative interdisciplinary study of
journalistic texts. These include the development of the awareness
of Czech immigrants in the USA, and the forms of their self-percep¬
tion with a view to their national identity, their original home coun¬
try and the new environment, and to the Czech language.

in the early 1900s), describes the peak era of Czech-
-American periodical press, paying special attention to the topics
explored, the genres, to the structure of the periodicals and to
linguistic aspects of the newspapers and magazines published
in Czech in the
1920s.
Chapter X is devoted to Czech-American periodicals published
between
1914
and
1945,
with a special emphasis on the Czech-Ameri¬
can anti-Nazi resistance-movement press, and to the description
of the immigrant activities during WWI and WWII.
Chapter XI explores the fall of the publication of Czech-Ameri¬
can press and its gradual decay in the second half of the 20th cen¬
tury, providing a survey of the most prominent immigrant peri¬
odicals of the time.

attempts to describe the relationship of Czech
Americans and their original homeland after
1989,
and introduces
the most significant periodicals currently published in Czech, with
respect to their linguistic aspects.
Chapter
XIII
gives a bibliographical list of Czech-American
periodicals started in the 19th and the 20th centuries, while the
concluding Chapter
XIV
offers a survey of Czech-American peri¬
odicals printed in English in the same period.
The principal goal of the present monograph is to reconstruct
the journalistic, linguistic and partly also ideological develop¬
ment, manifested as a process of gradual identification of the
Czech immigrants with the American environment in the period
from the second half of the 19th century up to the present. This is
a huge task, clearly exceeding the possibilities of a single publica¬
tion. A period as extensive as this could not possibly be described
in detail, either in terms of the completeness of the overview of
19th and 20th-century Czech immigrant press in the USA and its his¬
tory, with respect to language change, or in the treatment of the
process of integration of the immigrants in the multi-ethnic and
linguistically different context. It is, however, equally clear that
all these aspects are interrelated and had to be treated as such.
Consequently, the monograph represents an introduction to the
topic rather than a conclusive work, with the separate areas de¬
serving further study.
Czech-American newspapers and magazines record the eth¬
nic, social, political and often also personal development of the
Czech immigrant community and separate individuals in America.
A broadly conceived reconstruction of the global communication
relations, based on interdisciplinary research, might in future re¬
sult in more detailed knowledge of the overall historical develop¬
ment of Czech immigration in the United States in the 19th, and
consequently, in the 20th century.
