How has this situation come about? And what happens to a language when it is used by so many? These are the questions that David Crystal seeks to answer. Drawing on the unparalleled material of the British Library, David Crystal charts the evolution of the language through an examination of over 150 texts. The story begins with the earliest runic inscriptions in Old English and traces its development to a language of political power in the Middle Ages. It then shows how, between 1400 and 1800, a standard variety of English emerged, unifying the language yet allowing for functional stylistic differences. Three such styles are given detailed illustration: everyday English, English in the workplace, and English used as a medium of playful and literary expression. Finally, the regional diversity of the language is explored both nationally, through the accents and dialects of Britain, and internationally, in the new Englishes that have developed all over the globe. This book is the first history of the language to be fully illustrated with readable images of original texts, combined with transcriptions and translations, making it essential reading for both students of the English language and anyone with an interest in where our language has come from, where it is now and - perhaps most important of all - where it is heading.
