Study into the History of Settlement and Ruling Elites of Medieval Mazovia Abstract The book presents small, but very important number of so called możnowładztwo (baronage) and of much more extensive body of knighthood (rycerstwo) of one of fifteen Mazovian lands (Ducatus Mazovie), i.e. one per cent of the Polish nobility. It was being written for many years, on the basis of a thor¬ ough source search query, identity examination and analytical research. Its main purpose is to reconstruct the composition of individual heraldic families or clans gathering landowners, to present more important persons and their activities, in¬ cluding ducal officials. It is also to determine the possessions of the nobility, and especially to identify the narrow and influential group of the Mazovian people of power, described in the Latin sources as barones, to outline its factual role in the ruling apparatus in the Duchy of Mazovia. In Gostynin land the barones were conspicuous, and in the 16th century Mazovia this land had a least number of mansus -włóka (Latin mansus in Mazovia, an area of 16.8 hectare) of the zagro¬ dowa nobility (a kind of petty nobility, without their own peasants), a continua¬ tion of petty knights, so numerous in other lands (in Mazovia nobility was till 20% of population). In order to present a size of wealth, the author has used the data about the size of dowry and dot, number of settlements, but also of farming acreage of peas¬ ants found in the short tax registers of the 16th century. Also the sizes of settle¬ ments and estates as written down in the 19th century have been used, since they are usually consistent with the previous data, while at the same time they present information of woodlands belonging to the estates and colonised later. There are, however, some settlements without even such a scarce data, so a method of ap¬ proximate estimation of size has been left in historical square measure (in mansos mensure Culmensis, equal to 16,8 ha, used in Mazovia from the 14th do 19th cen¬ tury) only on the cartographic basis. 508 Abstract The book depicts the own properties of the knights and barones, in the order of heraldic clans, from the Awdaniecs to the Wężyks, and also the possessions of the knights heraldically unrecognised. The author pointed out the possibility to reconstruct the original grant of ducal woodland developed by next generations of the owners, even if no docu¬ ments testifying the grant have been preserved. Such a charter has survived for the Prawda family of Szczawin (1299), but we can guess there were similar ones for the Prus family of Słubice and Studzieniec, for the Grzymała families, descend¬ ants of Racibor castellan of Raciąż (known in 1319), for Bělina families of Brzozów, Rogala families of Iłów, and also for other barones. Here the author jux¬ taposes the data derived from incomplete medieval sources with fuller informa¬ tion from the first third of the 1 6th century. He also refers to the later sources, including seals of the Gostynin nobility found in the tax registers from 1563— 1565, and to the oldest armorials by Paprocki and Okolski containing the data from local traditions and from the official books of Gostynin lands existing at the time. A considerably broadened source base made it possible to thoroughly re¬ construct genealogical and heraldic relations of the barones and knights, first for one of the lands of the Duchy of Mazovia, still little recognised. The author presented also the activity of the barones and knights in the es¬ tates belonging to the duke and institutions of Church in this land. He estimat¬ ed the size of the estates and examined the process of their settlement on the German law basis, compiling the data about heads of plant village or administra¬ tors (scultetus and advocatus). He also analysed the scanty data about tenutariusze (tenant) (administrators of ducal or church property, that were leased to them) and other people who earned an income from those possessions, especially from the floating of timber via the Vistula River. Periodically, the barones made large profits from the Church property (including woodlands belonging to the Cloister of the Norbertine sisters in Plock), exploiting their position in the ducal appara¬ tus of power. The author recognised also the data about advocatia in knightly properties and he ascertained that the advocatie existed only in the estates of the barones. The author summarised his own conclusions and source examinations on Mazovian officials forming the corps of the ducal apparatus of power. He indi¬ cated actual authority of those officials, derived from earlier times, including the role of wojski {tribunus castń, an officer responsible for order in the province, when the chevalry was engaged in military expedition) in organising local defence and commanding the defence of wooden earth castrum (stone/brick castle). He reconstructed the ways of career development in the service of the duke, from a young courtier and court official to leading offices of the duchy. He estimated the average age of taking up the post and approximate life span of the members Abstract of ruling elite. He analysed the preserved documents of ducal grants for employ¬ ers in Mazovia from the end of the 13th century to the end of the 14th century, and emphasised the role played by the grants of woodlands allotted for develop¬ ment as a mean of a one-time payment for many years of service for the duke, especially of a courtier serving at his own expense. This method of settlement is also to be found in the 13th century in the expanding property of the Poznan diocese in return for bishops tithes collected for a long time by the ducal power apparatus. The author presented the role of barones in the development of parish net¬ work in the land of Gostynin. The barones built church buildings in their estates, thus providing their families, associates and subjects with pastoral service and their descendants — with the rights of patronage. They also founded there expen¬ sive defensive manors — fortalicia (similar to a motte-and-bailey form). As early as in the 14th and 15 th century the barones group took the lead in founding sac¬ ral objects and Church benefices, outdoing the duke in this sphere, which reflect¬ ed also the pace of their lands development. This influenced the religiousness and growing aspirations in culture and art of the contemporary people in Mazovia. In conclusion the author included a material classification of the Mazovian knighthood and barones group. Land shares of the petty knights did not exceed 10 mansos of farmland, i.e. 100 sexagenas of Prague grossus (sexagena had 60 gros- sus, and Prague grossus, i.e. Bohemian, equal to one and half Krakovian grossus), and they were burdened with numerous services to the ducal apparatus of power. The estates of moderately wealthy knights (spearmen with an armed mounted retinue at his own expense) contained a few settlements or bigger shares in the villages, had a dozen or more peasants and a maximum value of some hundred sexagenas oí grossus. From 800 sexagenas oí grossus on, we can talk about the es¬ tates oí barones, counting tens of peasants or more, and also adjacent woodlands. Barones were close associates of princes, they held important offices, preparing and implementing the decisions made by the ducal power centre. Thus, not only were they executors but also fellow decision makers of ducal rule, creators and pioneers of modernisation processes and development of the 14th- and 15th-cen- tury Mazovian lands.
