MYTH OF SOVIUS AND
THE CHRONOGRAPH OF
1262
On the basis of the Archival, Warsaw
and Vilnius copies and the copy of Zabelin
This book was written unplanned. It took the place of another one, in
which the author was going to trace equivalents of the myth of Sovius,
its typological reflections in folklore and in ancient literature of other
nations, primarily in Eastern Slavic chronicles and tales. The realization
ofthat
plan had to be delayed until later, since another task seemed to be
more suitable methodologically and hence more necessary at the time.
This necessary task was to gain knowledge of the source whose reflections
were to be looked for elsewhere, to learn exactly what parallels and plot
lines to search for (the search is necessarily demanded by the well-known
folkloric quality of the myth of Sovius).
What genesis, what characteristics the so-called myth of Sovius
has in the Chronograph of
1261,
what are the structure and the size of
this tale, what is the origin of Sovius's name? Only a comprehensive
research of the extant sources, allowing to make sounder conclusions
about this legend, makes it possible to venture into a more speculative
area of mythology and comparative folklore studies. In this respect, the
present book, (while rather late-appearing, considering the tradition in
the research of the legend of Sovius) is supposed to lay groundwork for
further research. The author hopes for a critical revision of earlier recons¬
tructions, various myths about the myth, as well for increase in intensity
of research based on textological facts and arguments.
So far, the Chronograph of
ггбг
has been understood as a banal
compilation, which accidentally combined rare and mutually unre¬
lated texts. As a "repository" full to the brim of various rarities, the
Chronograph was dissected into various smaller pieces, which were used
for specific purposes by mythologists (the myth of Sovius), by Byzantinists
(Malalas chronicle), by specialists in ancient Bulgarian literature (Shes-
todnev by Ekzarch the Bulgarian) etc. The present work offers a new,
summary

essentially different outlook on the Chronograph as on a harmonious
whole, an exceptional literary achievement, a vivid example of ancient
Lithuanian literature.
The book consists of three parts (i
-
analysis of literary genesis and
outline of the authorial text;
Π
-
analysis of the masterpiece on the basis
of all known manuscripts, indicating their different redactions; III
-
re¬
construction of the authorial text on the basis of textological analysis.
In the preface, we briefly discuss works of earlier researchers who
introduced the myth of Sovius into the arena of scholarly interest and
whose works are widely recognized even today. We emphasize that these
researchers did not try to analyse the Baltic mythological tale and discuss
their true scientific interests. Using specific examples, we show that there
is no good in blind reliance on one-and-a-half-century-old publications
and that the later version of the text (of the legend) is only too widespread.
In the first chapter of the first part („The myth of Sovius and the
Chronograph of
ігбг"),
we unfold how the Chronograph, which inclu¬
des a detailed folklore narrative, is a remarkable exception in the Baltic
medieval literature, which otherwise does not have folklore texts. The
author proposes an idea that it was the literary genesis that determined
the fixation of the folklore narrative. Texts of such quality and antiquity
are scarce; however, in this unique case
-
when Treniota displaced Min-
daugas
-
this text came in handy to justify and motivate the return of
the Lithuanian state to paganism. The author doubts whether the myth
of Sovius can be interpreted as a merely sporadic insertion and invites
to look into the genre of the Chronograph and into the purpose of the
myth of Sovius in it.
In the next chapter, "The dating of the monument. Sovius and
Abimelech", we acknowledge a certain controversy over the dating of
the Chronograph (the date of death of Amibelech, from whom the
years are counted, is unknown; the
chronographer
speaks only about
the beginning of the work, which appears to point to the occasional
nature of the text). Nevertheless, we agree with M. Obolenskys way
of calculating the year of the creation of the text. Further on, we take a
closer look at Abimelech whose life time is persistently identified with
that of Sovius. Although it is impossible to determine the life time of this

Biblical personage, he is selected again and again due to a reason
—
the
chronographer
seeks to find in the whole history of mankind a certain
suitable period, which could incorporate the local,
i.e.
Baltic Sovius. The
time span from the giant
Nimrod
to Abimelech, characterized by nomatic
hunter lifestyle and meat eating, became such an age.
In the third chapter, "Connective text about Sovius
-
the final part
of Section
17"
we show that the
chronographer was
quite inventive loo¬
king for a warm place for the ancestors of his people. In the voluminous
text of the Chronograph, he singled out his own Baits by means of struc¬
ture and composition, inserting a specific connective element before the
section about Sovius. Such a connective text, meant to "chain together"
the narrative, signifies the advent of an essentially new significant tale,
so there are few such connective texts in the Chronograph. The presence
of the connecrive text signifies the importance of the legend of Sovius
for the
Chronographer.
The connective text is not merely a mechanical abridgment of the
known myth of Sovius. The connective tale in the end of Section
17,
lac¬
king literary input of the author, by its nature is a piece of folklore, while
Section
18
is made up by means of a literary reworking of an etiological
tale. The line between the folklore (verbal) part and the literary (written)
part may be drawn on the basis of a certain
írrerugaríy
used syntactic cons¬
truction.

adherence to the norms of folklore poetics determines the
frequent use of absolute dative and the excess of pronouns. We suppose
that the abundance of
'
dattvus absolutus "framed" by the
folklore tale
is
related to the chronographer's language interference.
The fourth chapter, "Section
18
of the Chronograph, which descri¬
bes Sovius and his copious relatives" corrects the old misconception that
the legend of Sovius was torn out not only out of a broader text of the
Chronograph, but also from its own section. We show that this assump¬
tion is not valid, as the anonimous writer uses in Section
18
an unusual
combinatory language understandable only considering Chronograph as
a whole. He places the myth of Sovius before the Biblical tale about the
burned
Haran
who died in the presence of his father Terah (he stepped
into a fiery furnace to save his father
s
idols). Prior to this event, i.e. also
at Soviuss life time, the world history had not seen anything quite so

cruel.
There is no doubt, that the positioning of
che
legend of Sovius
in the Chronograph is not accidental, but on the contrary, judiciously
thought out. In order to make the meaning of the folklore tale absolutely
clear without resorting to extraneous comments or changes in the tale,
the writer puts it in the position of semantic differentiation
-
prior to
Terah-Haran: Sovius is in hell (dead), while the son, having gained the
experience (burned) returns and passes the experience to his people.
The fifth chapter, "The legend of Melchisedec in Section
33
and the
legend of Sovius. The origin of SovWs name", discloses the thematic and
plodine
similarity between the Bait Sovius and the biblical Melchisedec.
This similarity is supported textologically, since it is conceivable that the
translated text about Melchisedec (taken, from the Chronicle of George
Amartol) determined the beginning of the connective tale of the myth
of Sovius. The circumstance that the story about Melchisedec, which
strongly affects the Baltic tale, is placed not next to it, but much later in
the text, demonstrates that the Chronograph did not appear sporadically
and that the myth of Sovius was incorporated into an earlier preformed
context of a high artistic merit.
In the end of the chapter, we discuss ethnologies of Sovius's name.
In addition to the traditional etimology that connects the name to the
pronoun root *sav-t we discuss several new ones. Considering the specifics
of the Chronograph genre, all they have a literary origin. The genesis
of the name from the Old Russian collective noun genitive *besovje 'of
devilry' is proposed as the most easily imagined, supported textologi¬
cally, and hence the most likely one. It appears that when splitting the
text into lexemes (at those times, words were written without intervals
due to expensiveness of parchment), a word may have been improperly
divided into two words: be
+
Sovij, i.e. the verb "was" and the personal
name "Sovius", which also perfectly corresponds with the beginning of
the myth of Sovius "Sovius was a man"
(<Ά
man of devilment^).
In the sixth chapter, "Mentioning of Sovius's name in Section
107
of
the Chronograph" we attempt to throw light onto a certain literary ploy,
when the writer puts Sovius into the tale about the Antiochian Sosibius,
taken from Book IX of the Chronicle of John Malalas. The reason for
this might be the similar sound of the names and resemblance in the

activities of these two personages (Sosibius introduced a new funeral
rite
-
a funeral feast
-
among his people).
Finally, in the seventh and the last chapter of this part of the book,
"Tale about Nero's commander
Palemón
from Section no of the Chrono¬
graph" we discuss the significance of the Chronograph for the development
of the Lithuanian literature of later ages. The textological analysis shows
that a 16th century chronicler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had to use
precisely the Chronograph of

(in another part of the present book, we
determine that some transcripts of the Chronograph were made when the
legendary part of the Chronicle was being written). This is hardly surprising,
since the Second, or more extensive, Legendary part of the Lithuanian
Chronicles and the Bychowiec Chronicle are the works of a similar nature
with the Chronograph of
12.61,
in spite of belonging to different ages.
Naturally, a creator of the heraldic legend of the

6th century based his
story on that very medieval text, where it had been much earlier endeavou¬
red to extend the history of the Baits farther back into the past, trying to
connect it with Classical Antiquity. Looking for his roots, the author of the
15
century takes up the Encyclopaedia of Antiquity (dubbed so by Eastern
Slavs),
i.e.
the Chronicle of John Malalas, and adds to it a still existing piece
of Antiquity: the Baltic funeral rite invented by the Greek Sovius. The
author is motivated by the determination to prove the Antique origin of
Baltic tribes and thus irrevocably make the Baits a part of the world history.
The 16th century writer moves along these old tracks but in his own way.
In the second part of the book, "Textological overview of the
copies" we present a detailed examination of the Vilnius, Archival,
Warsaw Chronographs and of manuscript Nr.

of I.J. Zabelin. The
comparative
paléographie
analysis of the four copies results in the fol¬
lowing conclusions, which are of importance deducing the history and
development of the 13th century text.

The Warsaw Chronograph, dated the first quarter of the
ΐ6ώ
century on the basis of watermarks, was copied form the Archival Com¬
pendium of the third quarter of the 15th century.
z. The Archival Compendium was composed by means of uniting
five written sources. From one of them, the Archival Chronograph was

copied (it happened somewhat earlier, probably circa the middle of the
15th century). In the latter, the headpieces reflecting the later division (of
the whole Compendium) were not yet inserted into the blank spaces
(each a size of
12
lines) left for vignettes. The content of the Compendium
is of a later period and thus is not much significant for the analysis of
the Chronograph itself.
3.
The carefully copied Archival Chronograph at first did not have
any insertions. When it was integrated into the Archival Compendium,
a longer text fragment
-
the apocryphal '"The Testaments of the Twelve
Patriarchs"
-
was inserted into Section
37
of the Chronograph. Naturally,
as a part of the Compendium it was divided in a new way into Subsections
114-127. The passage about
Melchísedec
(folios
18-2.9)
was integrated
into Section
19
of the Chronograph (here is no division into subsections).

The Warsaw copy, kept in Polock until
1579,
made when the
source copy still existed in the form of several separate manuscripts, i.e.
when the Archival copy was not yet bound into one book. If we could
determine the location where one of these copies emerged, we would
be almost certainly able to localize the other one, closely related to the
former. On the basis of indirect
paléographie
evidence we would like
to make a preliminary conclusion that both the Archival and Warsaw
Chronographs were compiled by scribes in the house of a Vilnius Ort¬
hodox Metropolitan.

Unfortunately, the Warsaw Chronograph is a dead end in regard
to the evolution of the document of
126z.
After the siege of Polotsk in
1579,
the Warsaw copy was brought to the territory of the modem Poland
as a part of spoils of war. Therefore, the manuscript could not be a source
copy for any other copies.

The Vilnius Chronograph, kept for a few centuries in
Supraśl
and
dated by the first third of the
ібА
century on the basis of watermarks,
emerged in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, most probably in the same
Supraśl
monastery (judging by glosses made by copyists).

The three extant copies of the Chronograph of
1262 -
the Ar¬
chival, Warsaw and Vilnius copies
-
constitute the same redaction of
the masterpiece (Redaction Nr.
1),
They appear to be from the area of
cultural influence of the Grand Duchy to Lithuania. A comparison of

copies
creates the impression that they emerged at a similar time
in the same location.

Archival

Warsaw) Chronograph reproduces the text of

more precisely than the typologically similar Vilnius Chronograph.
The latter is copiously inscribed with various glosses and marginalia; its
creators felt free to change and to add to the original while copying it
(or have already copied it). Eventually, the efforts of copyist and readers
created a masterpiece demonstrating a high literary culture of the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania. The
Archivů
Chronograph in this respect is not
quite so impressive; however, it reproduces Redaction Nr.
2
much more
authentically. It is the Archival Chronograph that is more important in
the research of the myth of Sovius and the related texts of the Chrono¬
graph of
126z.

The manuscript of I.J. Zabelin is different from other copies (it
represents Redaction Nr.
1).
The most striking feature, allowing to distin¬
guish between the two redactions, is one or another version of the trans¬
lated Chronicle of John Malalas, incorporated into the Chronograph,

Zabelins copy was not copied from any other copy known today.
Its source copy, judging by the quality of reproducing the distant original,
equals the source copy of the Archival and Vilnius Chronographs and
sometimes even surpasses it.
Especially in this part of the book, we discuss glosses and marginalia
that in some way concern Lithuania, the myth of Sovius,
o just
help to
determine the time and theplace of the appearance of the copies. On the
basis of indirect evidence, we endeavour, whenever possible, to determine
how the reader of later times perceived Sovius. We also accord a conside¬
rable attention to recreation of authorial text in a more authentic form.
In the final pages of "Textological overview of the transcriptions" we
ponder on possible relations between the redactions of the Chronograph.
We propose that one ofthemostlikelypossibilities is the contemporaneous
creation of the both redactions. We give a typological explanation of
an eye-catching grammar mistake made in the connective text (of the
both redactions) about the mythical Sovius: in our opinion, it reflects
an intention to devalue the dangerous text.

In the third part of the book, "The text reconstruction" we include
all the fragments of the Chronograph that prove its literary genesis and
make up the authorial text of the Chronograph of
1262
as of a work of
ancient Lithuanian literature. The fragments are positioned in the text of
the book according to their redactions; within a redaction they are placed
according to the precision with which they were copied from the source
copy. The texts are accompanied by facsimiles, which is necessary, since
other researchers may detect in them other important information. The
facsimiles also illustrate and support some our conclusions (for exam¬
ple, about the Archival Chronograph being the source of the Warsaw
Chronograph). Further on, we present "Translations and comments" of
Sections
17-18.

we emphasize the literary
characteristics of the myth of Sovius, discussing a peculiar mechanism:
how the author of the Chronograph, wishing to introduce the gallery
of Sovius
