Der Breslauer Bischof, Johannes
V
Thurzo (1506-1520), dessen Kunst¬
mäzenatentum Thema dieses Buches ist, war eine der hervorragends¬
ten Persönlichkeiten in Schlesien der Frühen Neuzeit. Er wurde in Kra-
kau, in einer Patrizierfamilie geboren, die durch eine Gesellschaft mit
den Fugger verbunden war, studierte an der Jagiellonischen Universität
und in Italien. Obwohl zum geistlichen Stand bestimmt, pflegte Thurzo
die von seinem Vater angeknüpften Beziehungen zum königlichen Hof,
wo er diplomatische Aufgaben erfüllte. Am Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts
hatte Johannes zahlreiche geistliche Würden erworben, war unter ande¬
ren Domherr, sowie Dekan im Dom des Hl. Johannes der Taüfer in Bres¬
lau. Die Wahl dieses nicht-Schlesiers zum Bischof, und früher zu Koadi-
utor des Bischofs Johannes Roth erfolgte unter stürmischen Umständen
und nicht ohne Einfluss seines Vaters. 1506 gewählt, führte Thurzo eine
aktive kirchliche und kulturelle Tätigkeit. Sein Mäzenatentum, Teil der
letzten, gewann ihm die Name des „Vaters der Renaissance in Schle¬
sien , nachdem einige der ersten Beispiele der lokalen neuzeitlichen
Kunst inzwischen den von dem Bischof beauftragten Kunstwerken zu
finden sind. Eine Anzahl dieser wurde den Wissenschaftlern seit dem
19. Jahrhundert bekannt, viele sind aber in Vergessenheit geraten, was
das Gesamtbild des Mäzenatentums Thurzos unvollständig machte.
Der Zweck dieses Studiums war zuerst dieses Ensemble so komplett
wie möglich zu rekonstruieren, um es danach als solche analysieren.
Die Ergebnisse dieses Versuchs sind in detaillierten Kapiteln vorgestellt,
deren Titeln die Haupthemen der Ikonographie der Werke widerspie¬
geln: das Leiden Christi, die Compassio Mariae und verschiedenen Hei¬
ligen. Die Kunstwerke, von geschnitzten und bemalten Altarretabeln
aus Kirchen in Breslau und Neisse, Bilder Lucas Cranach und Albrecht
Dürer, bis zu Goldschmiedearbeiten Breslauer und Nürnberger Künst¬
ler wurden nicht nur unter dem oben genannten und dem formstilisti¬
schen Aspekt geforscht, aber auch in Berücksichtigung der Umstände

ihrer Bestellung und Entstehung. In vielen Fällen hatten die damaligen
Verhältnisse und Ereignisse, wie die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen
Bischof und Domkapitel, eine ausgesprochene Wirkung an ihrer Ent¬
stehung und müssen es deswegen auch auf ihre Interpretation haben.
Einige der hier untersuchten Werke waren weit bekannt, wie Dürers
Adam und Eva, der Altar der Fünf Schmerzen Mariens aus der Bres¬
lauer Dom oder der silberne Reliquiar-Altärchen, andere, wie der Reli-
quiar des hl. Vincentius, der Passionsaltar aus der Jacobi Kirche in Neis-
se, oder des Bischofs illuminierten Stundenbuch gar nicht bekannt wa¬
ren, oder wurden in der wissenschaftliche Literatur kaum erwähnt.

Thurzo war ein beteiligten Auftraggeber, mit klar bestimm¬
ten Erwartungen, der am Schöpfungsprozess teilnahm. Die Forschung,
auf komparative Analyse der Kunstwerke und archivalischen Quellen ba¬
siert, konnte nachweisen,
dass
er sich nicht auf der Wahl der Ikonogra¬
phie oder Grundzeichen einschränkte, sondern den beauftragten Künst¬
ler auch mit genauen Muster versorgen konnte.
Aus der Forschung hat sich ergibt,
dass
obwohl viele der von Thu¬
rzo im Auftrag gegebenen Werke Zeichen eines fortgeschrittenen Stils
trugen, gehörten sie inhaltlich zur Welt traditioneller Frömmigkeit und
Devotio, einer Meditation des göttlichen Opfers gewidmet, in dem kein
Spur des für die Renaissance charakteristischen Triumphalismus er¬
kennbar war. Das „moderne war zu den ornamentalen Komponenten
des Kunstwerkes begrenzt. Ein solcher Synkretismus erfolgte teilwei¬
se aus dem kräftigen persönlichen Einfluss des Bischofs auf künstleri¬
sche Wahlen, es ist aber auch für Länder, die weit von den Kulturzentren
liegen und wo progressive Tendenzen aufgrund und in traditionellen
Form- und Wertsystemen eingefügt wurden. Dekorationsformen sind
in der Regel die ersten, die zu diese Entwicklung rückwirken und ein¬
nehmen, wie im Fall der in diesem Studium analysierten Kunstwerke,
die Rolle eines Symbols der Erneuerung und Humanismus, eine Rolle
die ihnen auch der Bischof selbst höchstwahrscheinlich zugeschreiben
hat.
Ein besonderer Teil des Buches ist den verschiedenen Künstlern
und künstlerischen
Milieux
gewidmet, an den sich der Bischof Thurzo
mit seinen Aufträgen wandte. Örtlichen Meister und Handwerker wa¬
ren bei deren Ausführung beteiligt, sowie Künstler von ferne Zentren,
was vermuten lasst,
dass
des Bischofs Entscheidung allmählich mit al¬
ler Sorgfalt getroffen wurde, immer den aktuellen Bedarfen nach. Dies

bringt zusätzlich in Nachweis die Wichtigkeit, welche das künstleri¬
sche Kommunikationsmedium für diesen
Dignitär
hatte. Er verdankte
die Möglichkeit, mit einigen der besten Künstler seiner Zeit in Kontakt
zu stehen nicht nur seinem höhen gesellschaftlichen Stande und Fami¬
lienverbindungen, aber auch denen, die er selbst angeknüpft hat in den
Zentren moderner Ideen, mit
Erasmus
von Rotterdam oder Martin Lu¬
ther in Briefwechsel stehend. Das Mäzenatentum von Johannes

Thu-
rzo konnte nur in Breslau sein einzigartigen Gestalt nehmen, in einer
Stadt an der Kreuzung von Verkehrs- und Handelswege, zwischen Dan-
zig und Olmütz, Krakau und Nürnberg. Es ist diese Vereinigung einer
hervorragenden Persönlichkeit und einer außergewöhnlichen Ort, die
die charakteristischen Züge des Mäzenatentums des Breslauer Bischofs
Johannes
V
Thurzo bestimmt hat.

The bishop of
Wrocław,
Johannes V Thurzo
(1506-1520),
whose art pa¬
tronage is the subject of the present book, was one of the most emi¬
nent personages in Silesia of the Early-Modern era. Born in
Kraków,
in
a patriciate family of merchants and entrepreneurs, related to the Fug-
ger, he completed his academic education at the Jagiellonian Universi¬
ty and in Italy. Although destined to a career in the structures of the
Catholic Church, Thurzo maintained the close relationship to the ro¬
yal court established by his father, where he fulfilled diplomatic duties.
By the beginning of the
16.
century Johannes had already accumulated
many clerical dignities, he was, among others, canon, as well as dean of
the St. John the Baptist s cathedral in
Wrocław.
The election of this non-
Silesian to bishop, and earlier to co-adiutor of the bishop Johannes Roth
occurred under tempestuous circumstances and not without the influ¬
ence of Thurzo
s
father. Elected in
1506,
Johannes Thurzo lead an active
religious and cultural policy. His art patronage, part of the latter, gained
him the name of „Father of the Renaissance in Silesia , as the first exam¬
ples of the local renaissance art are to be found amongst the works he
commissioned. A number of those was known to researchers since the

century, but a large part sank into oblivion
-
thus making the image
of Thurzo s patronage incomplete.
The aim of this study was to recreate the collection of works of art
commissioned by the bishop of
Wrocław
as whole as possible in a first
step and to submit it, as such, to a complete analysis as in the follow¬
ing. The results of this attempt are presented in detailed chapters, whose
titles reflect the main
iconographie
themes of the works: the Passion
of Christ, the
Compassio
Mariae and various saints. The works of art,
ranging from carved and painted altarpieces from churches in
Wrocław
and
Nysa,
through paintings from Lucas Cranach and
Albrecht Dürer,
to works of goldsmiths from
Wrocław
and
Nürnberg,
were studied not
only under the above mentioned and the stylistic or formal aspect, but

also regarding the circumstances and context of their commission. In
many cases current events and situation, such as conflicts of the bishop
with the chapter, could have strongly affected their origin and therefore,
must have an influence on their interpretation. Some of the works of art
investigated here were widely known, like
Dürer s
Adam and Eve, the
Altarpiece of the Five Sorrows of Mary from the cathedral in Wroclaw
or the silver reliquary-portatile, others, like the Altarpiece of the Passion
of Christ from the St. James Church in Neisse, the reliquary of St. Vin¬
cent or the bishop s illuminated Book of Hours were unknown or barely
mentioned in scientific publications.
Johannes V Thurzo was a committed patron, of clearly specified ex¬
pectations, involved in the process of artistic creation. The research,
based on comparative analysis of the works of art and archival sources
could prove that he would not limit his influence to the choice of a par¬
ticular iconography or general features, but could also deliver precise
models to the hired artist.
The analysis revealed that although some of the works created on
Thurzo s commission bore the signs of a progressive style, the message
encoded in their iconography still belonged to the world of traditional
piety and devotion, dedicated to the meditation on sacrifice, combin¬
ing elements of the devotio
moderna
and medieval mystic and lacking
any of the triumphal accents characteristic for the Renaissance era. The
modern was in most cases limited to the ornamental components of
the work of art. That sort of syncretism resulted in part from the strong
personal influence of the bishop on artistic choices but is also typical
for regions distant from cultural centers, in which progressive tenden¬
cies were often randomly integrated into traditional systems of forms
and values. Decorative forms were usually the first to respond to this
evolution, embracing
-
like in the works of art analyzed in this study
-
the role of symbols of renewal and humanism, a role the bishop him¬
self most probably also ascribed to them.
A distinct part of the book is dedicated to the artists and artistic mi¬
lieux, to whom the bishop Thurzo addressed his commissions, different
in each case. Local masters and craftsmen are to be found among them,
as well as artist from far centers, which suggests, that the bishop s choice
was carefully made and deliberate, adequate to actual needs at every time.
It brings in evidence, in addition, the importance, which the artistic me¬
dium of communication had for this dignitary. He owed the opportunity

to contact some of the best artists of his times not only to his high social
rank and family connections, but also to the ones he established him¬
self in centers of modern ideas, corresponding with Erasmus of Rotter¬
dam or Martin Luther. The art patronage of Johannes Thurzo could only
take its unique shape in
Wrocław,
a city situated at the crossroads of the
main communication and trade routes, between
Gdańsk
and
Olomouc,
Kraków
and
Nürnberg.
This very coalescence of an outstanding personal¬
ity and an exceptional place determined the characteristics of the art pa¬
tronage of the bishop of
Wrocław,
Johannes V Thurzo.
