In Understanding Lorrie Moore Alison Kelly of¬
fers the first book-length critical analysis of this
wickedly humorous writer, whose fiction shows a
deep sensitivity to the dynamics of contemporary
gender relations and an abiding interest in por¬
traying and critiquing the American national char¬
acter. The recipient of multiple honors and awards
(including the
1998
O. Henry Award and the
2004
Rea
Award for the Short Story), Lorrie
JVtoore is best known for her short fiction, espe¬
cially her collection Birds of America. Kelly shows
that Moore s virtuosic prose, wry humor, and sense
of irony are tools for registering how Americans
face the discomfort of their daily lives as individu¬
als and as a nation.
Kelly traces Moore s emergence as a writer in
the
1980s
and her artistic development up to the
present day, illuminating the distinctive narrative
methods, aesthetics, and thematic preoccupations
of Moore s major works. Rather than speculating
on connections between the author s biography
and her writing, an approach that Moore herself
considers misguided, Kelly follows Moore s recur¬
rent characters, situations, metaphors, and motifs
in order to promote understanding of the texts and
appreciation for their wordplay, wit, and imagery.
Viewing her subject as a subtly political writer,
Kelly discusses JVIoore s major themes, techniques,
and stylistics as evidence that her characters pri¬
vate pains are symptomatic of a wider national
malaise.
Moore s works show a particular interest in
individual identity formation, self-representation
through language, and self-situation Avithin a col¬
lective. Close readings of Moore illustrate the
operation of imagery and irony in her works, her
relationship to postmodernism and
neorealism,
and her emphasis on women s experiences. In
addition Kelly s study explores both Moore s over¬
arching efforts to use imagination and narrative to
seek meaning from experience and her belief in the
responsibility of the writer to produce fiction that
is a vehicle for truth.
