(Zusammenfassung)
Simon Grünau ist um das Jahr 1455-1465/1470 in Tolkemit in Königlich Preu¬
ßen in einer zu der bürgerlichen Mittelschicht zugehörenden Familie geboren
und nach 17.12.1529 oder nach 20.02.1530 wahrscheinlich in
Danzig
gestorben.
Anfang der 80er Jahre des 15. Jahrhunderts trat er dem Dominikanerorden in
Elbing bei. Er war Lektor in Elbing und Liegnitz, vielleicht auch Prior in Elbing.
Ende des Jahres 1517 begann er die Preußische Chronik zu schreiben, die er im
Dezember 1529 oder im Februar 1530, kurz vor seinem Tod beendete. Das Nieder¬
schreiben der Chronik hing mit der Veröffentlichung von De Borvssiae antiqvi-
tatibvs
libri avo
des
Erasmus
Stella zusammen. Die sog. Elbinger Mönchschronik,
die die Vorlage der Preußischen Chronik sein sollte, gab es nie. Die Auftraggeber
der Preußischen Chronik waren die Danziger Ratsherren. Sie wurde vor allem in
Danzig
geschrieben, kleine Teile entstanden in Elbing. Es gibt drei Fassungen der
Preußischen Chronik. Die erste Fassung entstand zwischen Oktober/Dezember
1517 und April 1521 und ist gegen den Deutschen Orden gerichtet, die zweite,
zwischen Mai 1521 und Dezember 1526 geschrieben, und die dritte zwischen
September/Oktober 1527 und Dezember 1529/Februar 1530 fertig gestellt, hatten
bereits einen antireformatorischen Charakter. Wenn es um den Gegenstand der
Abhandlung geht, ist die Chronik ein einheitlicher Text - sie handelt von der
Landesgeschichte. Was die Form anbetrifft, bildet die Chronik einen uneinheitli¬
chen Text, der aus drei verschiedenen Teilen (Gattungen) besteht - der Geschich¬
te Preußens von der frühesten Zeit bis zur Gegenwart des Autors, die in einer
chronikalischen Form abgefasst ist (die Traktate I-VIII, X-XXIII); der Geschichte
der preußischen Bistümer und des Archidiakonats Pommerellen, die überwie¬
gend die Form der
Vitae
der preußischen Bischöfe hat (Traktat
IX)
und einer
gesellschaftlich-konfessionell-politischen Abhandlung, die von den Ursachen
des Untergangs Preußens zu Lebzeiten des Autors handelt (Traktat XXIV). Die
Preußische Chronik hat den Charakter einer Synthese der Nationalgeschichte.
Bisher wurde sie meistens als ein historiographisches Werk gesehen und unter¬
sucht. Ihre Struktur, unordentliche Chronologie, die große Zahl der in ihr

haltenen
Exempla
und Anekdoten erlaubt sie als ein historiographisches Kom¬
pendium zu betrachten, das vor allem als Quelle interessanter Geschichten für
die Prediger gedacht war. Die Chronik weist keine Merkmale eines rhetorisch¬
ästhetisch ausgestalteten Textes auf. Sie hat einen moralistisch-utilitaristischen
(ideologisch-propagandistischen) Charakter, von diesen Merkmalen überwiegt
das zweite. In der Preußischen Chronik lassen sich keine Anzeichen der wissen¬
schaftlichen Methode finden, oft werden sogar unwissenschaftliche Methoden
angewandt (das Erfinden von Quellen, z.B. der Chroniken von Diwonis, Chri¬
stian,
Jaroslav).
Sie repräsentiert aber bereits eine höhere Entwicklungsstufe der
Geschichtsschreibung, was sich an ihrem präzisen Gesamtentwurf, dem Ziel und
der Argumentation erkennen lässt (zweifellos ist es das Resultat der scholasti¬
schen Ausbildung des Autors). Simon Grünau hatte vor, die Chronik zu veröf¬
fentlichen, was ihm aber zu seiner Lebzeit misslang. Die Ursache hierfür war die
sich dynamisch verändernde sozialpolitische Situation in Preußen. Die Preußi¬
sche Chronik wurde von den preußischen Geschichtsschreibern hoch geschätzt
und hatte einen großen Einfluss auf manche Historiker. Man
muss
den Meinun¬
gen zustimmen, die die Unglaubwürdigkeit der Chronik als Informationsquelle
über den in ihr beschriebenen historischen Zeitabschnitt und ihre Parteilichkeit
in der Darstellung der aktuellen Ereignisse betonen. Simon Grünau - ein dem
Deutschen Orden gegenüber voreingenommener preußischer Patriot, der zwar
vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Kultur zu sehen ist, sich aber am König¬
reich Polen orientiert hat - war ein Mönch, der vom Alltag stark geprägt war.
An seinem Werk lässt sich erkennen,
dass
er emotional sehr engagiert war, vor
allem wenn es um die Deutschordensritter und Lutheraner ging, die er gehasst
hat. Simon Grünau war ein wissbegieriger Mensch von breiten Interessen, was in
großer thematischer Vielfalt in seinem Werk resultierte. Die Preußische Chronik
ist ein bedeutendes Beispiel der gegen den Deutschen Orden und die Reforma¬
tion gerichteten Propaganda, die sich an das gemeine Volk wandte. Sie ist eine
wertvolle Informationsquelle über die Mentalität, das Innenleben, die soziale,
konfessionelle und politische Anschauung des Verfassers. Sie ist auch ein inter¬
essantes Beispiel der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Kultur der Elite und der
Massenkultur und ein ausgezeichneter Lesestoff für jeden Forscher, der sich in
die Atmosphäre des Alltags der niedrigen Gesellschaftsschichten Preußens der
ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts einfühlen möchte. Keine andere Quelle eignet
sich hierfür besser.

The biggest part
of the chronicle was written by the author in

has got three editorial
works. The first oft hem was created in October/December 1517-April
1521
and
it has anti-Teutonic Order character. The second and the third parts were created
in May 1521-December
1526,
September/October 1527-December 1529/February
1530
and they carried anti-reformational overtones. The chronicle of which the
main point is the subject of description is a homogenous piece of writing concern¬
ing information about the country s history. As it comes to the consideration of
the form, it is assumed that this work is non-homogeneous because it is made of
three different parts (genres) concerning: the history of Prussia made in a chroni¬
cle style (treaties I-VIII, X-XXIII) since the earliest times until the author s times;
the history of bishoprics of Prussia and the Pomeranian archdeacon mainly cre¬
ated in the form of
vitae
of the Prussian bishops (treaty IX); and sociological, reli¬
gious and political dissertations, which were concerning issues about the reasons
of Prussia s decay during the author s life (treaty
XXIV).
The
Preußische Chronik
has the character of national history synthesis. Until now, the chronicle was more
commonly classified as a stride epic piece of writing. The structure, not overly
concerned with chronology, and with a large amount of examples and anecdotes,

allows the readers to treat it as a histographical compendium which is created to
provide them with interesting piece of information, useful while creating ser¬
mons. The
Preußische Chronik
does not posses any rhetorical-esthetical features.
It has a moral and utilitarian character (ideological-propaganda), but the main
factor is the second one. The
Preußische Chronik
does not show any beginnings
of scientifical method, often it is even equal to its denial (sources like eg. Diwonis,
Chrystian, Jarosław
Chronicles). It represents a higher level of histography which
is shown by its precise conception, purpose and argumentation (the scholastic
education of the author influenced it very deeply). Simon
Grünau was
planning
to publish his chronicle but he did not manage to do this during his life. The not
publicizing of the chronicle was highly influenced by the dynamically changing
sociological-political situation in Prussia. The
Preußische Chronik was
extremely
appreciated among Prussian chroniclers. It has also influenced some historians.
We should agree with some opinions claiming about unreliable fragments of the
chronicle concerning information about historical periods and also claiming
about tendentious judgment while describing current events. Simon
Grünau was
an anti-Teutonic Order Prussian patriot with German cultural background, but
his political orientation was directed towards the Polish Kingdom which made
him a really strong Monk consulted in everyday issues. It is easy to notice in his
reports that he was emotionally engaged, especially concerning Teutonic Order
and Lutherans
-
which he hated. The fact that he was extremely interested in
the world and that he also had a lot of various interests unique at that time, with
thematic diversity included in his piece of writing. The
Preußische Chronik
is a
very valuable example of Dominican anti-Teutonic Order and
counter-reformatie
propaganda which was meant for the simple, low social class of people. It is also
a valuable source telling the reader about mentality, the psyche, social, political
and religious views of its author. The chronicle exemplifies an interesting exam¬
ple of mixing
„elitarian
culture with „mass culture . Moreover, it is also perfect
literature for every researcher who wants to feel the atmosphere of everyday life
of the lower and poorer Prussian social class of the
1st
half of the 16th century,
because it is irreplaceable by any other source.
