Substances were once a source of mysterious power of shamans, and in the twentieth century they were closely guarded weapons of mass destruction. In the modern consumer society they became an exceptional merchandise, a dangerous weapon in the straggle with human freedom, health, and life. Young people are exposed to temptations of this world, they are avid for sensations and crave for new experiences. Are they aware of the dangers that await them in experimenting with addictive drugs? The goal of the research and of this study was to find an answer to this question. It is a report of a survey conducted among the adolescents of the first and final classes of technical and comprehensive schools in Bełżyce, Jasło, Lublin, Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, and Zawiercie. The survey was conducted in the years of 2001-2003 by the students and staff of the chair of the sociology of morality and the sociology of religion at the faculty of the social sciences of the Catholic University of Lublin. It was supervised by Rev. Prof. J. Mariański. It follows from the data that the adolescents knowledge about addictive drugs goes hand in hand with the quality of the main sources of this knowledge. The latter is a resultant not only of culture, erudition, and the level of moral life of the nation, its economic and political condition - and they all leave a lot to be desired. Television occupies the topmost place in the ranking of the sources of knowledge about drugs. Six in seven respondents chose it, and the lowest place is occupied by parents: they pointed to them six times rarer. Parents have the highest authority among the students under study, whereas teachers occupy the fifth place, priests and catechists the eighth, the last but one place. Immediately after parents the highest authority belongs to the mass media, then friends. They took the second place in the ranking of the sources of knowledge, and then respectively: school, youth journals, acquaintances, radio, daily Press, leaflets, and teachers. It is worth noting that the media young people point at are, of their nature, incapable of playing the role of an interlocutor of any discussion. Meanwhile those who are most 308 Summary responsible for education and formation of young people are most rarely the sources of knowledge about drugs (teachers are pointed out by every fourth, and parents by every seventh students). The data are confirmed by the ranking of interlocutors. The youth sporadically speak about drug addiction. Most often with friends and acquaintances. They decisively rarely speak about it with parents, teachers, priests, or catechists. It goes without saying that the fifth place of teachers in the ranking of persons of authority and institutions that are supposed to shape the students views on drug addiction, the sixth place of the ranking of those trusted (priests, nuns, and catechists - respectively sixth and eighth) show that the method with which the schools carry out the directives in the Law of counteracting drug addiction of 14th July 1997 must be verified. The findings show the adolescents belief that the problem of drug addiction exposed at the same time that their knowledge about drugs and intoxicating substances was insufficient. It is a worrying fact that every seventh person is actually ignorant of these issues, most often unaware. The decisive majority is not aware of the real, both social and individual, effects of addiction. In the ranking of twelve the most important problems and threats of the contemporary world the youth ranked drug addiction as the sixth, alcoholism and nicotinism the eighth and tenth place. Meanwhile the ranking of problems and threats treated as in general unimportant nicotinism and alcoholism took respectively the first and the third place, and drug addiction the sixth place. Only two thirds of the respondents are convinced that drugs are evil. The fifth part of the respondents have positive associations. Every tenth student is not able to describe in his or her own words either the phenomenon of drug addiction or a drug addict. Only the fourth part of the respondents declare that they are ready to treat drug addicts as sick persons or those that need help. Our procedure of research allowed us to show that the respondents have the tendency to perceive more and more often negative than positive traits in a drug addict. We have found that the youth more often tend to adopt a negative attitude towards those who take drugs than those who take addictive substances. This can be translated into the assessment of causes of drag addiction. The decisive majority think that young people do it out of curiosity, because of school problems and for bragging, then dissatisfaction with life and lack of sense, and curiosity. The respondents most often would try drugs out of curiosity of effects and willingness to forget about troubles. In these rankings family problems, and in the second school problems, took further positions. The main external factor conducive to drug addiction was thought to be an easy access to intoxicating substances. Drug trafficking is condemned, without any reserve, by almost two thirds of the youth (more than four fifths were negative). Taking drugs is assessed negatively by fewer than six in ten respondents (almost four fifths are negative). Almost half of the respondents are completely neutral whether someone smokes, every third does not mind drinking, every sixth does not mind taking drags, and every ninth does not mind drug trafficking. Seven in ten respondents believe that one should help drag addicts in their struggle against addiction. Additionally, every fifth is willing to support them. At the same time, four fifths of the respondents pinpoint that hitherto measures to prevent drug addictions and treatment of addicts have been insufficient. Such a high percentage of those who are Summary decisively critical about the specialised social structures means that young people exaggerate in their declarations. Every third of these teenagers (only every sixth boy and every tenth girl confirm that they are not able to give their own opinion) in fact knows a drug addict personally. Actually, every fifth student when asked how we should concretely help drug addicts in their struggle against addiction, gave no answer, and every tenth said he or she did not know how to do it. Together with those who stated that drug addicts cannot be helped or gave an evasive answer, they make up a 37-per cent group of respondents who have no conception as to the forms of bringing help to the addicts. What is more, exactly two thirds of the remaining students (two fifths of all respondents) think that this help should consist in establishing centres for drug addicts, counselling points, outpatients etc. or institutions, whose activity was criticised by the decisive majority of respondents. 5.6 per cent of respondents confessed they had used hallucinogenic substances many times, stimulants 9.0 per cent, and pacifiers 18.6 per cent. 22.8 per cent spoke marihuana at least a few times, and 58.1 per cent nicotine. Alcohol was drunk many times by 72.0 per cent, wine 72.4 per cent, and beer 92.9 per cent. Exactly every third of the students at least once tried a drug, and more than a half of them know a concrete dealer, where psychotropic substances can be purchased. The list where drugs can most easily be purchased contains concerts, discos, and streets immediately followed by school - this is what almost half of the students say. The ninth place is occupied by the playground and the surrounding of school (every fourth student say that one can buy drags there). Exactly half of the students profess that at least once someone offered them drugs, and every fifth was often or very often encouraged to buy them. In terms of absolute numbers every third student agreed to this proposal. This means that as many as two thirds of the students decided to try a drug. This terrifying result is confirmed by another declaration: although only one third of the respondents think they could take a drug, twice as many have concrete motives why they could, under certain circumstances, try it. The adolescents under study may therefore be divided into three almost equal parts: 1) those who have already tried drugs, 2) those who while openly reject taking drugs have concrete motivations to try them, 3) those who having no motivation never tried and probably will never try drugs, till someone makes them change their minds. Generally, our adolescents are good and sincere and they want to thought likewise. They have respective ideals, they seek allies and tools to make their ambitious plans come true. They want to absorb knowledge, they want to build a strong personality and be modelled on equally strong authorities. Owing to the lack of experience they cannot distinguish the true authorities from the false ones, the true values from pseudovalues, reliable knowledge from the students one or a journalists rumour, genuine art from kitsch, a honest proposal from a brutal trade offer, entertainment from being high, art from a vulgar show, permanent joy accompanying a successive overcoming one s own limitations from a momentary satisfaction when taking shortcuts. The inventors, producers, and traders of such elusive, false pseudovalues are not adolescents but adults. The young people are victims of greed, slyness, lack of authority, and lack of competence in adults. By observing them they learn from them and imitate them. Many times they are better than their master. 310 Summary Being led on by media ideals, created by adults hungry for power and profit, adolescents allow the decision-makers of the socio-political life to lead them into an unreal world of consumerism, pleasure, and entertainment as easy as possible. This world is presented as the only actually existing world in which one must find a position so they are within its orbit and do not waste their lives. Psychoactive substances, especially those causing addiction, are taken from the world of fiction by virtue of a magic wand. This is, unfortunately, real and helps adults to situate young people in this unreal world of fiction and keep them in it, while they can draw enormous profits. Naive adolescents, weak and inexperienced, are almost helpless to resist this weapon. In the beginning of the 1960s a Lebanese philosopher René Habachi noticed that there is a real danger when one wants to be sincere. We are well aware that the findings may contain a margin of error. The students wanted to be sincere. No matter how big this margin was, they showed in a persuasive manner the alarming condition of the adolescents in the context of the painful issue of drug addiction. Will the empirical material gathered in this publication help the policy makers to be aware of the problem? Will it make them take up concrete measures that will stop the business and its profit? The business of manipulating young people. We do mean only those businessmen who are directly connected with the production and drag trafficking. Translated by Jan Kłos
