Summary
It is for the sixth time now that we present to you the Guide
to the Holdings of the State Archives in
Piotrków Trybunalski
(SAPT). This edition is a reply to the users demand. The entire
issue of copies of the previous edition, modestly calculated at the
level of
300,
was totally exhausted already at the beginning of
2002.
Since that time, the archival holdings of SAPT have been
significantly extended, therefore, the last edition of the Guide
has become outdated to a considerable extent.
The Archives in
Piotrków Trybunalski
were brought into
existence as one of the first archives in reborn Poland, under the
Decree of the Head of State dated
7
February
1919.
However,
the archival tradition of
Piotrków
dates back to much more
distant times. The Archives of the Crown Tribunal began to
operate in
1578
and the Archives of Historical Records in
1828.
A majority of the oldest records were transferred to the Central
Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw at the end of the 19th c,
where they were lost during the Warsaw Uprising in
1944.
The history of SAPT began in spring
1918,
when the Ministry
of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment took up
efforts to establish archives in
Lublin, Piotrków, Radom
and
Kielce.
Those efforts finally resulted in the rescript of the
Regency Council of
31
July
1918
on the organisation of state
archives and custody over archival materials, which not only
provided for the establishment of the Warsaw Archives, but also
announced the establishment of archives in Lublin,
Piotrków
and
Płock.
During the interwar period, due to the absence of any other
state archives in the region, the territorial competence of the
Piotrków
Archives covered the entire area of the then
Voivodeship of
Łódź.
At the initial stage, the holdings of the
Piotrków
Archives
were preserved in

small storage facilities scattered around
Piotrków.
Records were brought to the currently occupied
building at
Toruńska
Street number
4
shortly before the out¬
break of the Second World War. In
1928,
the holdings of the
Piotrków
Archives accounted for
2 096
running meters of
records.
The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted the activity
of the Archives for a short time only, as it was resumed on

1940
under the supervision of the German
Archivamt
seated in
Radom.
During the Nazi occupation, some records of
interest for German authorities and scientists were taken away.
In consequence of war operations, the Archives lost
80%
of card
inventories and lists and app.15% out of over
24
thousand
archival units were taken away to the archives in Katowice and
Poznan.
The
Piotrków
Archives resumed activity in Poland freed from
Nazi occupation already on
2
February
1945.
The first tasks
performed by archivists were focused on the arrangement and
revindication of records which survived.
In the years
1949-1953,
the holdings of the
Piotrków
Archives were depleted again by the transfer of app.
1 400
out
of
2 500
running meters of records to the State Archives in
Łódź.
The significance of the Archives thus deprived of most valuable
materials considerably decreased. On
1
January
1951,
the
Piotrków
Archives were subordinated as a local branch to the
State Archives in
Łódź,
where many valuable
fonds
representing
abundant sources to the history of the
Piotrków
region can now
be found.
An important event for their future history was the promotion
of the
Piotrków
Archives to the rank of the Voivodeship State
Archives as of
21
January
1976,
which reinstated the independent
existence of the Archives. The area of the then created
Voivodeship of
Piotrków,
including today s poviats of
Bełchatów,
Opoczno, Piotrków, Radomsko and Tomaszów,
became the territory
of the Archives operation. Upon the entry into force of the Act
on the National Archival Holdings and Archives of

July
1983,
the Archives were renamed to the present name: State Archives
in
Piotrków Trybunalski.
The current organisational structure of SAPT is as follows:

Division I of Archival Materials,

Division II of Registration, Information and Access,
—
Division III on Current Records.
Additionally, SAPT controls the Local Branch in
Tomaszów
Mazowiecki.

a potential user has to fill in the Application for the Use of
Archival Holdings
{Zgłoszenie użytkownika zasobu archiwal¬
nego),
providing personal data and details of the purpose of the
query. Where documents to be made available include legally
protected data, the user is additionally obligated to submit
a written statement on the scope and the manner of intended
use. Moreover, there is an obligation to quote prefaces to
inventories (on the rights of manuscripts) by researchers in
scientific dissertations written on the basis of the SAPT
holdings.
Selected archival units are made available on the basis of
vouchers separately filled in for each inventory item (vouchers
are accepted for realisation until
2:30
pm). Upon the user s
request, microfilms from outside the holdings of the Archives
may also be brought to the study room (the user bears the cost
of postal services).
This Guide presents the SAPT holdings as at

July
2006.
The holdings include
1 139
archival
fonds
and collections
accounting for
3 295.47
running meters, comprising the total of
229 840
archival units.
Archival materials currently preserved by SAPT include
records created within the area of the Archives territorial
competence, from the years
1367-2005.
Thus, the holdings
represent almost all types of chanceries existing on Polish lands:
Old Polish (mostly diplomas), Prussian (records of the town of
Radomsko
dating back to the late 18th a), Polish (records of
towns from the first half of the 19th a), Russian (a majority of
the holdings from the second half of the 19th

and the beginning
of the 20th c), Austrian (Imperial and Royal Poviat
Headquarters in
Piotrków
and
Radomsko)
and contemporary
ones.
The most important
fonds
preserved in the
Piotrków
Archives
include: a collection of parchment documents
(1569-1725),
Kopiarz Sulejowski (Liber
privilegiorum
fundationum
et
dotationum) of
1618
with the first mention about
Piotrków
(1217),
records of the merchant guild in
Piotrków
(1532-1915),
records of the town of
Piotrków
(1746-1945),
records of the town
of
Radomsko
(1793-1944),
records of the Poviat
Starosty
of
Piotrków
(1919-1939),
as well as mortgage registers, records of
notaries and courts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Moreover,
the holdings of the Archives include administrative records from
the territory of poviats of
Piotrków, Radomsko, Bełchatów,

records of enterprises and financial institutions, records of the
Polish United Workers Party from the former Voivodeship of
Piotrków
and public and parish registry records. The SAPT
holdings also include microfilms of
fonds
preserved by other
institutions, which pertain to the territory of
Piotrków
and the
area of operation of the Archives. The list of such microfilms is
included in Chapter
18.
In the core part of the Guide, entitled
Zasób archiwum
(Holdings of the Archives), abridged descriptions of
fonds
and
collections are divided into

subject groups, and subsequently
into subgroups arranged in a chronological and alphabetical or
hierarchical and alphabetical order.
