SUMMARY
For the first time the question of women s higher education arose in the Russian Empire and
the Dniper Ukraine as its part in the middle of the 19th century. In Russia it became the
central question of the awaked at that time women s liberation movement. One of the main
reasons of it was the fact that Russia till the year
1905
stayed an absolute monarchy. That
is why higher education was practically the only one legal sphere where women could try
to achieve the equal rights as most of the spheres of political and public activities were for a
long time closed for men as well as for women.
The first attempts to continue their education seemed to be hopeful fur women. At the
beginning of the
lööOlh Íhey
could attend some lectures as free visitors according
lo
the
agreements of the professors in the most of the Universities including the St. Vladimir
Kyiv University. Moreover, the professors councils of all four departments in the Kyiv
University proposed not only to allow women to be the ordinary students, but three of these
departments (historical-philological, physic-mathematical and medical) were even ready
lu
grant them
lo
obtain scientific degrees and the rights
lo do
the research work in the future.
Although, such opinion was supported by the most Universities, the Government shared
the conservative positions and with the introduction
1863
of the new University s statute
visiting of the lectures was closed for women.
Seeing the necessity to stop the increasing study s migration of women to the European
Universities, especially to Switzerland, traditionally liberal to foreigner female students,
which took place at the end of 1860th
—
beginning of 1870th years, witch often lead to
women s involving to revolutionary movement, the Russian government had to find another
form of higher education for women inland,
The problem was solved by the creation of Higher women s courses organized in four
university cities of the Russian Empire, and Kyiv appeared to be the only Ukrainian city,
where it was allowed to open such women s school. These courses were private and theirs
creation was the result of many efforts of women themselves and a group of the professors
who supported their interest to education.
The I ligher women s courses in Kyiv were opened in
1878
with two departments
—
historical-
philological and physic-mathematical. Their activities ran upon lots of difficulties. There
were near the financial problems (the courses received no state support) mostly the absence
of rights of high school and no preferences in the father work for its graduating students to
compare to the persons, who had only the secondary education. The absence and not-giving
of special professional advantages provoked the decrease on the number of students, because
not all of them could let themselves four-year study, not-connected with any professional
rights in the future. Besides, very poor programs in mathematics and natural sciences of
women s secondary schools made most of girls not to be ready to the higher courses of these
subjects, what was one of the reasons which provoked the closure of the physic-mathematical
department in
1886.
But in spite of all the difficulties, the courses could exist and even improve the educational
programs, so that the full studying course was extended to four years and the lectures,
especially in humanitarian subjects were drawn closer to the University s ones. The most
of women students paid a lot of interest to the studying, so that, according to the references
of the professors, they could, as a rule, show at the examinations the knowledge not worse
than the men students.

Most of the professors, such as the Founder of the Courses
Silvestr
Gogotskyj and Volodymyr
Ikonnikov.the Principal of the courses
(1881-1889)
and such professors as Volodymyr
Antonových,
Fedir
Fortynskyj, Ivan Luchytskyj and some others tried to support the
courses and the pioneers of women s education in different way. Because of common efforts
of the teachers, women s students and also some representatives of the society, whose
charitable support to this school, the High women s courses of Kyiv in the organization of
study s process and number of students occupied the second place after the Courses in
St.-Pctersburg, witch were better organized in scientific and financial sides.
The total number of the women students during this first period of their work
(1878—1889)
was
1097.
But only a bit more than the third part of them, because of the reasons explained
above could finish the lull course of study. Almost
90
per cent of all the students came from
the territory of the Dniper Ukraine once again proving the significance of the courses as
a regional educational center. Most of the women visited the Courses at that time were
preparing themselves to the further self-reliant work, and most of them later became teachers
and even founders and directors of women s secondary schools. Among the graduating
students there were some in the future famous persons, such as a historian and archeologist
Kateryna Melnyk-Antonovych, the Ukrainian writer Grytsko Grygorenko (the real name
Alexandra Sudovshchikova-Kosach) and some other workers of educational, cultural or
Ukrainian national movements.
The entrance of new students was stopped in
1886
according to the government s order, so
that the last graduation took place in
1889.
The main reason for it was the fear of power and
the increase of the student s political activity and the struggle with it. The next
17
years,
when the courses w.ere closed, their former teachers and other professors and scientists,
women themselves didn t stop the effort to their new opening. It became possible only after
the year of
1905,
when the revolution brought particular liberalization in all spheres of life
in the Russian empire.
Although the courses remained, as before, a private school, this
timo
it was decided to
organize the study completely according to it at the St. Vladimir University, and a big part
of its professors became also the professors of women s university. This
timi: a
significant
efforts for the development of this higher school was done by the Director of the Courses
Gavryil Suslov
(1911-1917),
the professors Josyp Kosonogov, Grygorij Demchenko, Adolf
Sonni,
Scrgij
Rďhrtnatskyj
and others.
In
1906,
lhe
first year after the re-opening, two new departments in addition to
lhe
existing
ones were founded.
Λ
year later also the medical and juridical departments were founded,
ai lhe
latter in two years was also opened economic-commercial chair tor the women
sludenls,
which had
lo
connect iheir education wilh practice, because most of
lhe
positions
in juridical sphere, such as advocacy or judge positions were
al
lhal
time not attainable for
women. In
1916
the Medical department was separated from
lhe
Courses as an independent
Women s medical institute. With the opening of Ihese new faculties and developing of own
high-level system of labor, lecture-rooms of natural sciences, seminars of social sciences, the
Kyiv Higher women s coursers became a well- organized and modern for
ils lime
University.
From the school year
1914—1915
they moved to iheir own building, which was erected

help, only built at own money of the courses and charitable support
The University s status of the courses was
al
last confirmed with an official documents
in
1911-1913,
which gave to the women graduating students the right to pass the states
examinations and receive universities diplomas and that confirmed the university level of
the education at the Kyiv courses. The number of the women students of these women s
University increased during
1912—1913
to about
5
thousand, that was almost equal to

the number of men students of the St. Vladimir University. The results of the studies and
examinations of women students were, after the official reports, not only worse but sometimes
even better than of the men. At the same time, for lots of women students descended from the
middle social layers, therefore the years of study were connected to them with the financial
difficulties, so that about a half of all women students had at the same time to work and earn
themselves for life and study.
The professors council of the courses had an idea to rename the Kyiv Higher women s courses
to the St.
Olga
Women s University, that should symbolically underline the equality with
the man s St. Vladimir University (Saints Vladimir and
Olga
were the princes in Old
Rus
time). But it was not confirmed by the Ministry of people s education and the name
St.
Olga
University left unofficial.
But the most brightly about the meaning of the women s University say the names of theirs
graduating students, among them there were well-known scientists, such as historians
Natalia Polonska (later Polonska-Vasylenko), archcologist Valeria Kozlovska, philologists
Varvara
Adriánova
(later
Adrianiva-
Pcretz) and Sophia Shcheglova and
Leonila
Kosonogova, Ukrainian writer Zinaida Tulub, mathematician Klavdia Latysheva, biologist
Maria Moisejcva, chemist Avgusta Pavlynova and some others. And among them there
were thousands of high-level specialists in different spears, first of all, teachers of secondary
schools.
The latest period of the courses work during
1917—1920
was very important, but. at. the
same time extremely difficult for them. From one side, the liberalization of academical life in
the revolutionary years opened new perspectives for the development of the courses, such as
more freedom of student s organizations and partial Ukranization of the educational process.
Krom
the other side, the increasing political and economical crisis and often changes of the
governments· created big difficulties for further existence of higher schools in all. The reforms
of the Soviet rule in the educational sphere
(1919—1920)
led to the end of history of separate
higher schools for women and provoked creation of new forms of education following the
principles of co-education, l- rom the other side, the I (igh women s courses in Kyiv could
work at that, revolution s time till the August
1920,
longer than lots of other universities,
which at that time were already closed or re-organized. That shows the necessity of it as an
educational center and its possibility to relatively independent existence as a good organized
educational institution.
The Kyiv Higher women s courses worked in the both period together only
25
academical
years. For the university it was a relatively short life. But at the same time its bright and
important pages of an educational as well as gender history of Ukrainian women and the
significant examples of women s struggle for the right of education from the one side and
pedagogical enthusiasm from the other. The women students had for a long time to prove
their right for education. The future professional achievements of lots of women graduated
students were especially important, because they were dune in spile many difficulties and
overcoming of moral preconceptions, the most serious in the first period of university
education of women.
