Eisenstaedt is one of the most remarkable of
living photographers. His early years were spent in
Germany, where, during the
1920s
and
1930s,
he
became an important pioneer of modern photo¬
graphic reporting. In
1935
he migrated to the
United States, where he joined the staff of Life in
the following year. Since then he has been respon¬
sible for countless photographs (including over
90
cover pictures
)
taken for Life, and his work has not
only appeared in magazines all over the world but
has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art,
New York.
This book has been written in response to many
requests over the years for an account of his pro¬
fessional experience, his technical methods, his views
on what constitutes a good picture, and for his ad¬
vice to aspiring photographers. Mr Eisenstaedt has
met all these requests in a manner that will offer
both pleasure and valuable practical knowledge to
the reader. He describes his early life and how he
took up photography as a career: other sections of
the book are entitled A Sense of Timing , A Feel¬
ing for Light , The Discovering Eye , and Candid
Photography ; and there is a section of notes on
technique. The text is continuous, while also pro¬
viding a commentary on the long sequence of Mr
Eisenstaedt s photographs reproduced here. He dis¬
cusses his subjects, and his reasons for choosing
them, in a delightfully informal, yet informative,
style.
Arthur Goldsmith is Head of Instruction at the
Famous Photographers School and Editor of Famous
Photographers Magazine.
