On a New Model of Researching Regional History
The book comprises materials from a methodological conference
organized on
7
December
2005
in
Poznań
by the Centre The Great
Poland Institute of Adam
Mickiewicz
University and the
Poznaň
Institute for Western Affairs. It consists of two parts: part one discusses
a new model of synthesis of regional history, while part two looks at
a new model of the monograph of the city. In either part papers are
arranged in the same order. Each part opens with a leading text which
introduces the topic and suggests some solutions, followed by three
commentaries.
Part One opens with a paper by
Witold Molik
titled On a New Model
of Synthesis of Regional History

The Great Poland Case. The text
involves several levels. The author begins with a critical assessment of
the current state of Polish historiography. Certainly its achievements
cannot be overlooked, but
-
in his opinion
—
they cannot obscure the
many negative phenomena besetting the milieu of our historians: an
increasing deprofessionalization and provincialization of the historical
writing, its traditionalism or absence of methodological discourse. Next
the author assesses the syntheses and textbooks on the history of Poland
published in recent years, with an emphasis on publications on the 19th
and 20th centuries. Against this backdrop he introduces the main topic,
and presents arguments justifying the need of developing modern
syntheses of the history of different regions and the methodological
issues which this involves. Finally

on the example of The History of
Great Poland which is being prepared by
Poznaň
historians
-
he submits
for discussion the conception of such a synthesis. The paper by
Witold

Molik is followed by three commentaries by:
Józef Borzyszkowski,
Marek Czapliński
and
Włodzimierz Stępiński.
They offer numerous
suggestions, postulates and reflections worth considering. The presented
views are often polemical and based on the authors research experien¬
ces from many years of studies on the past of Vistula
Pomerania,
Silesia,
and Western
Pomerania,
and concern both the present state of Polish
historiography as well as the model of a modern synthesis of regional
history.
Part Two opens with an intellectually stimulating text by Robert
Traba
titled Continuity and Interrupted History: The City of Long
Duration. The author
-
for whom his own studies on the history of the
city of
Olsztyn
were the main inspiration
-
addresses his remarks mostly
to monographs of large and middle-sized cities. He holds a very critical
opinion of the currently published monographs of Polish cities, the
central objections being that they are deeply rooted in traditional
historiography and lack insightful theoretical reflection. Drawing from
the experience of other scientific disciplines he presents several
interesting proposals how to take a step beyond the usual catalogue of
questions to widen the interpretational horizons applicable to studies on
the history of cities, which in turn would make it possible to construct
narrative around completely new axes. At the end

he presents the assumptions and layout of the currently
prepared volume of essays portraying the past of
Olsztyn.

taries written by the experts in the history of cities:
Andrzej Chwalba,
Edward
Włodarczyk
and
Stanisław Żerko
complement this part of the
book. Also these authors refer to their own experiences in formulating
a series of important research postulates, reflections and polemical
remarks both of a general and more specific character.
The next part of the book brings a fairly detailed account of the
discussion written by
Agnieszka
Baszko and
Alina
Hine.
Since it is not
a write-up of the proceedings, not all of the contributions and opinions

have been included, but only the most essential ones. However, a full list
of all the participants is appended. The authors present the themes of the
discussion according to the following key problems: the use of theory in
historical research and the state of methodology of history, the condition
of Polish historiography, the model of a new synthesis of regional
history, the state and perspectives of research on the history of cities,
and the readership of historical books.
The compact structure of the volume is spanned by two short texts
of the main speakers at the
Poznań
conference,
Witold Molik
and Robert
Traba,
which is their gloss to the commentaries and discussion. Here
they address more carefully the issues raised by others. Since those
reflections were written within a year after the conference, they could
also look at their own key texts from a distance and to modify or add
insight to some of the conclusions.
