„HISTORICAL REVIEW
The Marxist Transformation of History as a Science
in Bulgaria
Abstract
The political changes in Bulgaria that started on September 9th
1944
ruling circles, dominated by the Communist party, began immediately
to impose a total control over the life of the nation. That policy
reflected directly on the status of Social Sciences in general and on
History in particular. The overall goal was the transformation of His¬
tory on the basis of Marxist methodology in such a way that it turned
into an integral part of the ideology supposed to solidify the rule of
those on power.
The target of this research is the role of the first Marxist histori¬
cal journal after September 9th
torical Review), as a factor in the transformation of Social Science in
Bulgaria and simultaneously as a reflection of the transformation
itself. This main goal presupposed the sources of the research
materials, published in all sections in the journal for the period
1947/1948.
The
leads to several main conclusions. Many of the articles in the journal,
written on the basis of the political position of the ruling communist
party, give evidence to the fact that the party aimed at regulating the
work of the historian, putting it into a certain framework and direct¬
ing it to a certain line that was in accordance with the idea of estab¬
lishing a total control over society. Those articles speak about the
desire to turn History into an instrument for achieving certain politi¬
cal, ideological and educational goals. The political leadership began
to give directives to the historian how to work. Those articles, along¬
side the theoretical ones, put forward the problem of the diminishing
pluralism in the sphere of methodology, as well as the imposition of
Marxist-Leninist philosophy as the obligatory one in the study of the
past.
The journal solidified the idea of having Soviet historiography as
the measure for the development of Bulgarian historiography, as well
as of its corrective mechanisms. Accordingly came the notion that all
predecessors in Bulgarian historiography before
or not, had distorted or falsified in their writings the national and
world s past.
Most contributors to the journal showed their inclination for mak¬
ing summaries and conclusions and for discovering general trends.
The model of reconstructing a certain period was put in accordance
with the theory of socio-economic formations and it became the lead¬
ing line in most narratives. Thus, many authors began searching for
and putting in writing new facts without the accompanying research
studies. Quite small was the number of those historians, who had as a
guiding line in the logic of their research going from the fact to the
build-up of the theoretical model. Moreover, a new stylistics of the
narrative was introduced that was directly linked or copied from that
of the politicians.
