Kiroushm, A.M. Maloletko, A.A. Tishkin BEREZOVAYA LUKA - THE BRONZE AGE SETTLEMENT IN THE ALEISK STEPPE. VOLUME I . Active archaeological researches of the Bronze Age sites had been carried out in the ter¬ ritory of Eurasia in the latest decades. It helped the scientists find the solutions of serious problems of the received results interpretation. However, in some regions of Russia such studying leaves mach to be desired. It especially concerns the west-siberian part of steppe and forest-steppe Ob-Irtyshye. The age under analysis is marked by bronze metallurgy practice in the III millennium B.C. It was an important step in the development of productive forces, because there appeared an opportunity of serial production of various wares. It changed the character of trade- economic links. Bronze tools are one of many showings of the age characteristics. More im¬ portant changes took place in the population life s work organization in the wide territory of Eurasia. Many branch economy began to form: such economy combined appropriating works (collecting, hunting, fishery) and producting branches (stock-raising, agriculture) and it af¬ fected demographic and social organization of ancient societies of the age. It also affected many other spheres of people s life (ideology, art style of life, way of life, etc.). All said above took place also under the influence of natural and climatic factors and the basic was increase of aridness (Kosarev M.F., 1991). A large number of the Bronze Age settlements were found and researched in many re¬ gions of Russia. Predominant among them are locations and sites. On such background sta¬ tionary complexes stand out. They were called economic and cultural centres characterized by many artifact s and traces that point at the significant concentration of population and long period of living there. As a rule, household (supplementary) and specialized types of buildings are found in the area of such settlements and endeavours of architectural and planning solu¬ tions are traced. Specialized, production or religious structures and traces of their functioning show a higher status of economic and cultural centre in comparison with other settlements (Gorbunov V.S., 1992). There are numerous research results of such sites in forest-steppe Volgo-Uralye, South Zauralye, Nizhneye Pritobolye and other regions of Eurasia. Revelation of economic and cultural centres of the Bronze Age in the south of Western Siberia (Forest- steppe Altay in particular) stalls. One of such objects is the settlement of Berezovaya Luka 285 ___________ Ю. Φ. Кирюшин, A.M. Малолетко, A.A. Титкин. Березовая Лука - поселение эпохи бронзы... that has been under the study of Aleisk archaeological expedition of the Altay State Univer¬ sity for several years. The site is situated in the Aleisk region of the Altay territory. The basic purpose of the carried out works is the research of cultural layer in excavation 1 prepared in 1997 to get the data and file with concrete maintenance knowledge about the culture of ancient people lived on the territory of foothills-flat part of the modern Altay terri¬ tory in the Early Bronze Age. Among the problems, that stood before the members of the ex¬ pedition, it is necessary to mention the following: study of the geographic location and natural conditions of the territory where the remains of the ancient site was fixed; formation of infor¬ mational base for the possible reconstruction of the paleography of the region; explanation of the bedding conditions of the settlement cultural layer; gathering and preparation of numerous samples and test for their further analysis; working up of the found materials; getting of the preliminary definitions; and others. On the ways of the science-research activity, made by the authors during the study of archaeological objects, is the integration of many specialists from different fields of science and the aim is gathering of wider and more objective information about ancient history of Altay. Before the discovering of the Berezovaya Luka settlement in the territory of Forest- steppe Altay, bush and nest character was vividly seen in the settlements of the Early Bronze Age (Kiroushin Y.F., Abdulganeev M.T., Shamshin A.B., 1983). Accumulation of such sites with weak cultural layer are well known on bank rivers old beds and other places and even in Mountain Altay (Kiroushin Y.F., 2002). Earlier such circumstances were ex¬ plained as a complex type of the economy of population of those times; the complex com¬ bined cattle-breeding, big animals hunting and developed fishery. Absence of stationary long¬ time dwellings in settlements was explained by warm climate. However, accumulated experi¬ ence proved that people in the Early Bronze Age used other criteria when choosing places for settlements. The data received in Berezovaya Luka site supplemented our knowledge about the inter¬ esting period of the Aleisk steppe territory opening. The main purpose was fuller publication in the monograph of the received data about the results of archaeological excavations and ex¬ aminations. Besides, there are result of numerous definishions and analyses presented in the book. They were made by lighly qualified specialists from different Russian institutions. P.A. Kosinzev (the Institute of plant and animal ecology of the Ural department of RAS) made the definishions of all numerous osteological material found in the site (Addition I). Pétrographie and other data about stone material were found in the settlement based on the conclusions made by A.M. Maloletko, B.N. Luzgin, S.G. Platonova (Altay State University) and on the transparent polished chips description made by the senior lecturer of Petrography chair of Tomsk State University Y.V. Utkin, M.M. Márkin and A.L. Kungurov also took part in the analysis and description of stone artifacts. Results of half-quantitative spectral analysis of selected by A.A. Tishkin tests were received in Mineralogy and geochemistry laboratory of Tomsk State University and in Central laboratory of former West-Siberian geological admini¬ stration in Novokuznetsk. Results of radiocarbon dating of tests were received by L.A. Orlova in Geology and paleoclimatology laboratory of the Institute of Geology SB of RAS. Definish¬ ions of mollusc shells, structure of ostracodes and seed fauna were made by micropaleontolo- 286 Y.F. Kiroushin, A. M. Maloletko, A.A. Tishkin. Berezovaya Luka - the Bronze Age settlement in the Aleisk Steppe gists I.I. Teterina and E.A. Ponomareva from Novokuznetsk and E.A. Novikov from Tomsk. Results of complex analysis of soil samples were made in the laboratory attached to the chair Agrochemistry and soil science of Altay State Agrarian University N.K. Glushkova. There were also received materials about humus content in specially taken tests (analyst L.B. Nesterova). Spore-pollen complexes were found and described by S.N. Babenko - palinologist of chemistry and lithology laboratory of Tomsk geological expedition; it was made on the basis of the material prepared by A.M. Maloletko and A.A. Tishkin. S.P. Grushin took part in the analysis and description of the technic of ornament making fixed on fragments of ceramic crockery. V.A. Borisov studied technological peculiarities of clay crockery (Addi¬ tion II). Plant species from herbarium made by A.M. Maloletko were defined by T.A. Terekhina (the chair of botany of Alţay State University). Tracological conclusions were made by N.Y. Kungurova (department of archaeology Nasledie of SPC, Barnaul) and doc¬ tor of history science P.V. Volkov (the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography SB of RAS, Novosibirsk) (Addition V). Bone remains of human skeletons, found in the settlement, were studied by an anthropologist, kandidat of history science S.S. Tur (head of anthropology study of Altay State University); she also gave the information about the age of dead babies and other people. Paleogenetic researches were carried out in the Institute of Molecular biology RAS (Moscow) under the guidance of A.B. Poltaraus (Addition IV). Working up and numer¬ ous calculation of some categories of finds from the settlement of Beresovaya Luka were made by third-year students of History Department Under the guidance of A.A. Tishkin (they had museum training practice). Member of archaeological circle (headed by M.M. Markin) took an active part in the work. The authors are grateful to all who worked in expeditions, made analyses of received data, took part in the preparation of this book and made for study of a very interesting site of the Early Bronze Age. However, generalazing works about eneolithic and bronze of Western Siberia (Molo- din V.l., 1985; Kosarev M.F., 1991; Kiroushin Y.F., Grushin S.P., Tishkin A.A., 2003a; etc.) are published, it is necessary to mark that study of funeral-burial and settlement complexes is prospective. It will give an opportunity for more productive researches in the filld of econom¬ ics ancient production art (Molodin V.l., 1992; Kiroushin Y.F., Kungurpv A.L., Tishkin A.A., 2002b), social structure, world-outlook, etc. Results of such work on the basis of the Bere¬ zovaya Luka site materials will be published in the planned volumes of the marked theme of the monographic publication.
