Works by Johann Weyer xli
Works on Johann Weyer and Sixteenth Century Witchcraft xliii
Book One: The Devil, His Origin, Aims, and Power
i. The origin of the Devil, the time of his creation, his essence, and
his fall. 1
iii. Why and how the Devil deceived Eve and corrupted the first world 4
(the world before the Flood).
iv. The Devil's schemes at the outset of the second world, and the 6
beginnings of the notorious practice of magic.
viii. The Devil's prophets, enthusiasts, Pythian women, and his
many sibyls. 8
ix. One and the same form of worship of the Devil in the most widely 9
separated regions. How variously he deludes people in Christian Europe.
x. How the evil spirits can perform such wonders, and especially how 13
they can predict things.
xiii. The trickery whereby the Devil makes sport of people in religious 17
orders, by counterfeiting the spirits of the deceased, as demonstrated
by the formula prescribed for questioning those same spirits.
xvi. Other specters produced by demons. 21
xviii. Natural things, and things accomplished by special skills, are 25
sometimes thought to be caused by demons.
xxii. Pagan names for the demons, deriving from the variety of their 29
vi Contents
activities, and Latin names, distinguished on the basis of their
official functions. Familiar spirits, earth dwarfs, and mountain dwarfs,
white sibyls, and demons named in pagan literature and poetry.
[Portions summarized.]
xxiii. Distinctions among the demons, according to the theologians 35
and philosophers. Also, differences between good and evil demons.
[Portions summarized.]
xxiv. That the Devil cannot do all things, and can do nothing without 38
God's consent; and why, within set limits, God permits him to do
many things.
Book Two: Of Magicians of 111 Repute
i. Old Testament names denoting magicians of ill repute and poisoners. 44
iv. Later practitioners of infamous magic. The unhappy end of some 50
of them.
v. Concerning certain books of magic. 54
ix. The Pythian woman in Endor raised not Samuel but a devil specter 59
in the image of Samuel.
xiv. Concerning Pythonic diviners and gastrimanteia or belly divining. 63
xv. Concerning gyromanteia or circle divining, charlatans who use 66
circles, and theraphim.
xvi. One should not believe the oracles of magician prophets or have 69
recourse to such persons.
xvii. Magical divination and false healing by some priests and monks. 72
xviii. Uneducated physicians and surgeons attribute what is really 75
their own ignorance and error to witchcraft and to the saints.
Book Three: Of Lamiae
i. A description of what a lamia is. 81
lii. The profession made by the lamiae is refuted, and the pact is 88
shown to be deceptive, foolish, and of no weight.
iv. Further proofs of the vanity of the pact. 91
vi. Concerning the credulity and frailty of the female sex. 96
Contents vii
vii. The distorted imagination of melancholies. 97
viii. Concerning the imagination and how it is impaired. 101
xi. How and why lamiae are demented by the demon so as to 105
believe and admit that they have done things which they could
not possibly have done.
xii. Whether and how and when the Devil can carry bodies 108
through the air.
xvii. Natural sleep producing medications by which lamiae are 113
sometimes deluded. Ointments of the lamiae and certain sleep
producing plants which greatly disturb the mind.
xviii. Concerning opium, heiran luc, gelotophyllis, nightshade 117
furiosus, theangelis, and the potion which induced madness in
a lay brother at Bern.
xix. Concerning the illusion of demonic incubus and also the 120
natural malady of Incubus.
xx. By considering the membrane called the hymen, which protects 122
all virgins, it is demonstrated beyond all doubt that the lying of
demons with women is nonsense and purely imaginary.
xxiii. A false story concerning the "demonic" origin of Martin Luther. 125
xxv. Concerning the sexual mingling of witches among themselves. 127
xxvi. The false belief that seed is conveyed by means of succubus 128
and incubus.
xxxii. An extraordinary account of childbearing on the part of a 131
possessed woman, caused by a lamia.
xxxiii. The only teacher that the lamiae have is their impaired 133
imagination; and the objects with which they are believed to work
injury are ridiculous.
xxxv. The persons properly called poisoners. Some notable examples 135
of poisoning.
xxxviii. Love potions, hippomanes, and all other drugs of the sort, 141
rather than causing love, actually induce frenzy. [Portions summarized.]
viii Contents
Book Four: Of Those Who Are Thought to Be Afflicted
by the Witchcraft of Lamiae
i. Those who are popularly supposed to be tormented by the 144
witchcraft of lamiae, and those who are mentioned in the Bible
as being so injured, are all vexed or possessed by the Devil.
ii. Concerning monstrous objects ejected from the mouth. Many 147
arguments to demonstrate that these objects had not been in the body.
iii. The interesting story of a possessed girl who was said to be 152
tormented by lamiae. Also, some remarks about the sign of the cross.
iv. Because of its connection with the previous account, I add a 154
passing description of how this girl and other such persons were
cured when the formula of blessing had been recited by the women
who had been imprisoned on the charge of causing these illnesses.
vi. Accounts of demonically possessed persons who were thought 157
to be assailed by lamiae.

after his death, knives, wood, and pieces of iron are removed.
x. Some young female religious who were really possessed by 163
demons were thought to be bewitched by lamiae.
xi. Diabolical harassment attributed to lamiae in the convent of 166
Kentorp. Also, a discussion of viscous, "gluey" milk, and a
demonstration that milk is not expressed from rushes.
xii. Young women are harassed by a demon in the convent of 169
Nazareth at Cologne and elsewhere.
xiii. A remarkable account about a girl from whose side a knife was 171
surgically removed.
xiv. An explanation of this amazing spectacle. [Portions summarized.] 173
xv. A ridiculous method for inserting hard objects into the body. 175
xx. Testicles cannot be removed by a charm, but the demon can 177
induce sexual impotence by natural means.
xxiii. Concerning the disease of lycanthropy, in which men believe 181
themselves to be turned into wolves.
xxiv. Concerning a natural change of sex in human beings. 183
Contents i_x
xxv. Many persons beset by melancholia are thought to be possessed, 185
and vice versa.

method for driving out a demon.
xv. A certain physician's witching cures. 209
xvi. The only way in which demons "heal" diseases is by ceasing 212
from their own injurious activities.
xvii. Demonic healings are counterfeit, but they are sometimes 216
permitted by God—and then often with great effect—because of the
credulity of foolish people.
xviii. Some rather engaging stories about magical cures, illustrating 217
the important role played by blind faith.
xxi. Antiquity and the Roman Church believed that demons and 221
witchcraft were averted by certain materials.
xxiii. Grave abuses committed by the common run of priest exorcists. 226
xxiv. Memorable stories about certain exorcists. 230

xxviii. The surest method for curing maleficium, i.e., evil doing 237
or witchcraft.
x Contents
xxxiv. How one must deal in various ways with persons who suffer 241
from various and multiple afflictions. Also, some diverse methods
of healing which are deserving of imitation.
xxxv. Certain and approved cures for pretended possession. 244
