Abstract:It is conservatively estimated that there are 35 million unemployed people living in the mature industrialized countries. The authors of this well-researched and provocative book argue that, without a radical rethink, the UK and Western Europe are headed for disaster. They examine the impact of today's technological industrial revolution on employment and society - looking at changes in the number of people working, who these workers are, and how and where they work. The decline in the number of full-time jobs is presented as a long-term general trend and the authors predict the consequences for a society without job security and limited prospects for employment possibilities. By means of conclusion, the authors offer the statistics and policy suggestions which could prescribe an uncompromising and challenging longer-term remedy for chronic unemployment and non-employment.
