which Ernst
Toller completed within a few days of
his lamented death, is National Socialist
Berlin, and in the simple and typical story
of the martyrdom of a Protestant pastor,
Friedrich Hall,
we have an epitome of the
German tragedy, which is also the European
tragedy. To the reader the most remark¬
able aspect of this drama, deeply moving in
its simplicity, in its implications and in its
controlled emotion, may well be the way
in which its author, almost alone among
the men who have dared to speak their
minds about the land that rejected them,
has striven for and attained an artist s
objectivity. The Nazis, even in the eyes of
one of their victims, are also human beings.
And even the black horror of the scene in
the Concentration Camp is not all the
deadest black. This is not a play of flawless
heroes and unmitigated villains, but of
living men and women, victims of circum¬
stances largely, and suffering and causing
suffering through their ideals and their
passions.
