Et-Tell, 2,5 km vom heutigen Nordufer des Sees Gennesaret entfernt, ist von den amerikanische Ausgräbern mit Betsaida identifiziert worden, was aber immer noch diskutiert wird. Das Fischerdorf war die Heimat der Apostel Petrus, Andreas und Philippus. Jesus weilte mehrfach hier (Blindenheilung Mk 8,22-26). Herodes Philippus verlieh dem Dorf um 30 n. Chr. den Status einer griechischen Polis und benannte es zu Ehren der Tochter des Augustus in Iulias um. Nach dem Tod des Herodes Philippus (33 n.
