Gipson ist besonders für seine fünfzehnbändige Geschichte des Britischen Empire zur Zeit des Siebenjährigen Krieges (French and Indian War) und der amerikanischen Revolution bekannt (''The British Empire before the American Revolution'', erschienen 1936–1970). Er galt als einer der herausragenden Vertreter der sogenannten ''Imperial School'' der amerikanischen Historiographie, die eine objektivere Sicht der Revolution anregte und dabei letztlich eine pro-britisch geprägte Neuinterpretation der Ereignisse vorlegte. Zwar spielt Gipsons Interpretation der Revolution im geschichtswissenschaftlichen Diskurs heute kaum mehr eine Rolle, doch wird sein Werk wegen seiner Detailfülle zumindest als Nachschlagewerk geschätzt.
